I think am gonna unsubscribe to this channel. The only thing this is is a an ad for the academy. KZbin is filled with producers who have great free advice and guidance. So yeah it was nice being a part of this channel but I'm out.

Thanks so much. I bought soothe2 a while ago and have just been using it on vocals. Your explanation has made me understand that i can use it on everything i need, mono and side and only where it needs it. Really interesting cheers

Late 90s and early 2000s was the sweet spot. I would argue that EDM is definitely falling off. You can’t really use EDC, or Coachella as the measuring stick. Those have actually become pretty mainstream, and have lineups that include genres outside of EDM. The true measurement is in how many local shows are available now. I live in San Francisco, and it used to be a Mecca for EDM. All those little clubs have now closed. The scene today is nothing like it was back then.

In my opinion this guy is talking nonsense. He says, "if you can't get signed to a good label, just make better music or build a better brand (by purchasing our course)." In every genre there are a few good labels and the rest are garbage. Labels are run by other producers and sometimes all they do is upload track to streaming services and stores. You talk about your data that self-releasing doesn't do the numbers, but you don't understand the data. Nobody is listening to this music not because it was released independently. It is not listened because it is bad and it is not promoted. If you can release music on a decent label, do it. But if you only get poor offers from labels that do not promote their products - self-publish. You'll learn a lot about the industry.

Thanks for pointing out the difference between static and dynamic issues. This was a concept I kind of understood subconsciously, so it's good to have words for that concept. I will check out The Masker!

Trackspacer is a good cheap plugin for the use cases detailed in your video; it's a dynamic EQ focused exclusively around sidechaining, and it's capable of mid/side processing. I think it generally sells for about 40 euros (at the very least that's the sale price). I owned it for a few years, and admittedly I neglected it for a while, then a buddy of mine who does professional music studio work talked about how it's one of those perfect 'don't work too hard' tools. I've been using it religiously since and it seldom fails.

But surely... if the vocal is "in the middle" it actually means it's equally coming out of both sides... unless we're mixing in X.1 surround sound now.

Rick is spot-on; been saying pretty much the same thing for decades. This is why I laugh when people refer to every music-maker as "an artist". Art, as classically defined, is pretty much dead. So many refuse to understand it; truth often devastates the ego.

I dont think mono and stereo are that separated. Both stereo and mono are played back with the same physical speakers. Lets say only your left speaker works, you wouldn't hear any stereo. But it would still play your stereo sounds, just the "left side" of the stereo. So basically your stereo and mono are still competing for space. The whole concept of what stereo is, is not different from mono. Stereo is created through different methods, sometimes delay, sometime detune etc. It's still a sound signal that is being played by the same speaker as the mono signal.

I'd appreciate a further explanation about this. To me, the logic doesn't make sense. I'll elaborate further; Let's say you have a 30hz very low sinewave and you have 2 subs on each side of the room. A mono sound will mirror both subs. Now if you add a stereo signal at 30hz (which you never ofc want to do), let's say you add some Haas effect; your left side sub will try to play back the 30hz stereo signal on top of the mono signal. Now let's say the signal is just 2hz, you could visually see your sub wobble un-evenly. Your sub is physically trying to compete the stereo and mono, even though Haas is considered 100% stereo. The same physical phenomenon happens at all frequencies. So to me, stereo and mono always compete.

Wouldn't you instead set up Soothe 2 on the synth and sidechain the vocals there so that anytime the vocals play, the synth will duck? I got confused when you said to add Soothe to the vocal main and enable sidechain there. Are you sending the synth to the vocal sidechain?

People always say Martin Garrix is an outlier in the way that he went straight to the top. But what people see to forget is that he had been producing almost ten years when he released Animals at 17. He says what inspired him to start was Tiësto performing at the 2004 Olympics. Animals was released in 2014. We all love his music now, it just takes time.

Amazing and I’d totally use soothe 2 for that if it wasnt’ such a processor hog (rightfully so though) my 2019 MacBook Pro can’t handle more than like 2-3 instances 😂. Wish i could run soothe 2 in side chain on nearly every track though that plugin is freaking magical! Another trick i do is side chaining compressing certain instruments out of the way as a ducker (say lead guitar when the vocal is present). In general though side chaining is freaking amazing and under utilized for solving issues. This is a very detailed version of it that you got going on and it’s smart. I may rework some of my side chains to dynamic EQs in my template. I’ve used it before for certain things but didn’t think to widen the scope to this.

The first one is just a bulshit take 💀 When they say to "put things out there", they mean to get feedback, not to instantly get famous. The idea is that if you get feedback earlier, you can quickly advance as a producer, becoming better as you go on. And then you can look at those previous tracks to see how far you've come, usually in places where you're in self-doubt (such as a beat-block).

Don't sign to labels. It might be right for some people, but if you want to keep all the rights and royalties to your music, you can promote your own stuff far more effectively and personally than if you went to a label. I know a few people who got screwed over by labels. Don't make the same mistake!
