Jake. Coffee. My food science escapes me. Google reminds me that whole coffee beans are 3-5% tannins, 13% proteins, 10-15% fixed oils and wax, and 2-3% caffeine as chlorogenic acid. So at most you have about 65% that is complex carbohydrate. And that’s what you turn into charcoal. The rest of that stuff either volatilizes and off-gases or remains to “gunk up” your charcoal. The wax and protein residue explains the filthy bore. That rattling noise in your gun safe is your rifle having the jitters. Next time add some cream and sugar. For the rifles sake. Fox out

Agreed, seems like the swab was full of oil or wax. I'm sure you could do some sort of solvent extraction to remove the oils, but why bother when you can turn so many other available things into carbon.

@@anomonyous All my food science lab work from 1974 is coming back….I worked so hard to forget it, too. Ok. When you roast coffee your using heat to break chemical bonds. Complex carbohydrates become less complex. Sugars are simple carbs. So roasting makes coffee “sweet”….sort of. It also breaks up stable oils and waxes to release “flavors” not detectable by our pallet otherwise. Green coffee, as they drink in Arabia, is nothing like roasted coffee. Tastes like lawn clippings and the caffeine jolt makes you break a sweat. Roasting also moderates the caffeine content. The “darker” the roast the less caffeine, generally. For Jakes purpose grounds or un-brewed coffee should not matter. There’s just not that much potential pure carbon there to begin with, and a solvent extraction with di-hydrous oxide is not removing much material in reality. Stay curious. Fox out

Got to thinking about your ‘Antique muzzle loading propellant’ series, and realized the obvious, that the charcoal sources that have worked the best are best described as ‘clean’ sources, ie, low on natural oils, tannins, and other contaminants. The woods that have worked best are the kinds that burn cleanly with very little smoke or ‘creosote’. So what we need to look for is ‘ridiculous’ stuff that burns clean to make charcoal from.

Give quaking aspen or big tooth aspen a try. Both are called poplar here in Maine. Aspen is of the willow family and makes good BP. The Oriental powder mill that was here in Gorham/Windham Maine made 1/4 of the BP the Union Army used in the Civil war. Poplar is everywhere, solid assumption that’s what they were sourcing from the local wood lots for charcoal.

Flour was one of the options on the last poll, but I'd like to see starch instead. Starch is pure carbohydrates which are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, so it's a monopropellant in that sense meaning you might not even need to turn it into charcoal to make powder with it.

This is actually a great test, though, because it gives us something of a control sample. Now we just need to see powders made from sugar cane, dried beans and linseeds and we can really dial in the contributions.

That 1369 velocity is the most appropriate reading ever. A Marine friend of mine joked that his MOS (job description number) was 13-69: “unlucky ____sucker” Joking aside, it seems as if you are learning some general rules of carbon material. Purer, less dense, more refined organic materials work better. The darker and oilier the worse it will be. The least lignin, like the Cottonelle, is the best. Soft, but non-pitchy wood is desirable. Coffee grounds have a ton of extraneous gak in them. All that flavor and color. You want bland.

@adama1294 yeah, but imagine if it was already a fine powder to start with. You'd probably have to get hold of a lot of it, though, as I'm sure it would shrink quite a bit during pyrolysis. The point of this being, the finer the powders you can start with, means less milling in the end. I bet that if all of your ingredients are sufficiently powdered to begin with, you might even be able to skip the majority of the milling time. If you could cut your milling time even in half, that's huge.

That's true of cotton, charcloth, and really low density woods like balsa and poplar. Interestingly poplar works better than cotton. Cotton is also more pure. I didn't take into account of some things though like maybe individual cotton fibers are more dense than the cell wall of say something like poplar or alder. So that could play a critical factor as well when it comes to the end quality of finished product.

Not a carbon source per se but in pyrotechnics, black powder and similar compositions often include dextrin as a binder. It would be interesting to see how adding a few (say 5) % of dextrin would effect burn performance. Specifically dextrin bonded lightly pressed vs dextrin+heavy pressing vs normal powder. Note that dextrin requires only about half as much oxidizer as the carbon or sulfur it would be replacing. (based on dextrin => H2O/CO, C=>CO and S=>SO2 It would require 44% of carbon or 59% of the sulfur it would replace) If you want to be super scientific you can either adjust your ratios or just add 2.25g dextrin for every gram of carbon or 1.7g for every gram of sulfur you replace and accept that you will end up with a slightly larger batch. You would also have to account for powder density and adjust your charge measurements accordingly. The reason why I'm asking (aside from it's use in fireworks BP) is that I suspect it has both advantageous thermodynamic properties and might even have acceptable burn rate due to it's short chains. It's also fairly straightforward to make from corn starch. Edit: I did some math and based on pure stoichiometry the current 77/13/10 formula has 68.28% complete combustion (for future reference). This is OK as optimum performance is actually closer to CO than CO2 (at least according to Nakka's sugar rocketry site but the considerations are similar)

Eager to see the video of the modern powder manufacture process you are using. The purification of the nitrate sounds interesting. One question though: you mention using brass balls for the milling while most people use lead. The reason for not using steel or iron is pretty obvious but is there a reason why brass makes a good mill medium? I heard of many homemade ball mills that use glass marbles as a medium. Would those work to make powder or do you think it makes no real difference?
@Everythingblackpowder
@Everythingblackpowder 3 ай бұрын
Lead makes dirty powder. Lead being soft will get ground down and will end up in your powder. You do t have that problem with brass. Marbles will work in a pinch but because they are so light it takes a long time to finish milling

Kudos for all the work you put in, especially into this particular series. As someone mentioned here already, starch might be an interesting source for charcoal. It, just as cellulose, is a polymer made out of glucose, so I wonder if it would perform similarly to good quality paper. It's just good to check nutritional label, as the naming for eg. corn starches/flours isn't really consistent - if it has anything more that carbs and maybe some traces of proteins and fats, it isn't pure starch. Also wonder if there would be any difference between eg. potato and corn starches, as they differ a bit - but that's probably something to consider if it doesn't completely suck ;-) Another interesting alternative might be table sugar - I think it would be cheaper than starch.

Used Coffee grounds you say..... Who suggested this. Just curious. You realize this is venturing into the absurd. I like that. It takes guts. You said you needed a drink after testing this concoction. I needed a drink watching it. The temerity of trying it must be applauded. I'm sure your first words when making it were, "watch this". Back to the drawing board. Hey, how about trying a drawing board.

Had high expectations for the coffee grounds. The comments and patch funk had me thinking you made the batch from possum assholes, milled with gumballs. Laughing so hard my belly hurts. I've never doubted your science, and hope you keep at it. I'm switching to Cottonelle, buying brass balls and buying a 20 ton jack.

You’d think that if beans or seeds of any kind made good or great BP, that’s what the experts who made powder in the golden age of BP would have settled on. It was the state of the art then and experimentation was high. Heck it’s taken a long time to get powder like Swiss that is remotely close to the quality of BP back then. They used to be able to regulate BP double rifles to I high standard then, and it’s nearly impossible to do so today with modern BP

Tea might work surprisingly well. It's got significantly less of the fats and oils than coffee on account of it being leaves instead of seeds. So there's less stuff to create tar and fouling when it burns.
