Thats impressive. You figure that period was about the darkest in automotive history for performance. I had guessed high nines but you sure got that beat, sounds great too! My first new car was a '74 HornetX 360. I de-smogged the engine and added dual exhausts. It pulled a 60 in 8 seconds and 80 in 15.

Currently have a 79 survivor with 318 2bbl w/43k miles and dead stock. Brother and I timed it with a stopwatch and 0-60 was 15 SECONDS!!!! More of a cruiser, not a barn burner. Nice to see the potential when one is put together like this one is. Have another one with a 360 2bbl that would be perfect for some mild mods...

Nice job on the build of your '79 'Doba! I had a '79 Newport ex-cop with the E58 360 4bbl. with factory dual snorkel air cleaner, dual exhaust, and factory rear air shocks. It was a good runner for sure given the era it was built! Handled pretty well for its mass as well! It was similar to the 1st gen. Cordobas in that it was in fact built on the B body unibody design, but was modified enough so it was called an R body to distinguish it. That old Newport rusted out living in the salt belt, but its driveline lived on and was rebuilt and swapped into a low mile '82 Cordoba with all options except sunroof. :-)

0-60 times are about right for that car when new. Most cars of that period (mid to late 70s) with V8s ran anywhere from 7.5 to 9 seconds. The quarter mile time however surprised me. Even a late 70s Corvette or the Trans Am with the 400 4 barrel took over 15 seconds to run it. As for top speed. Considering speed and power were an after thought after 74 most cars could barely go over 110 and few could even touch 120. Brand new with that engine that car could maybe hit 115. The only American cars that could go faster than 120 was the Corvette and the Trans Am with the 400. Cordoba with a 400 and the Thunderbird with a 400 topped out at like 117.

As a chevy guy I always admired alot of the engineering that went into MOPAR products, I didnt hear if you car had a 318 or 360 but Im betting on the 360 as I dont think a stock 318 could make for a 13:50 ET on the quarter. There are many things you can do to improve your times, but with the cherry car you have I would be happy with what you have, but enough of that nonsense! If I wanted to keep my car sweet for daily driving and still surprise people off the line, you need at least a 3:42 or better yet a 3:73 positraction, some slapper bars out back to tilt the car up on launch to hook up. Then have an exhaust shop weld in some cut outs, so your engine can get the exhaust out asap, which would then of course bring in the fresh fuel sooner, allowing it to rev faster and higher. Keep that 600 com edelbrock, so if you improve the launch with traction bars, put in 373 gears and get in a exhaust cutout, from a 13:50 et you should be able to get into the mid to high 12's. Now that would make for a great day driver!

Not bad at all for a big Olde Carr with a small block from the smogger/5MPH bumper era. A slightly looser converter and deeper gear would really wake it up and wouldn't cost that much. What is your rear gear by the way? It seems a bit on the tall side. When I first got my Satellite/Roadrunner clone I drove it for a few years with a small block 273 and a 276 rear gear, swapping to a 3.55 gear with the 273 still in the car made a massive difference, it felt more like I had swapped the motor than the gear.
@OldeCarrGuy
@OldeCarrGuy 5 жыл бұрын
Currently has a 3:21 Sure Grip! If I went to a 3:55 I’d want to swat the tranny for a a518 with the extra gear for highway driving! Not easy to come by these days!
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 5 жыл бұрын
@@OldeCarrGuy Good gear, after driving with a 3.55 for a few years I'd have to say it really wouldn't be worth the money and effort to swap to it from a 3.21. I can still get good highway mileage with the 3 speed and 3.55 but I have to run tall tires and keep it at 55 in the slow lane while everyone blows right past me doing 80 and that isn't fun. However in my opinion those modern overdrive transmissions are way too heavy, I could have swapped one into mine when I did the Magnum swap but me and a few other wiser minds concluded that it was far too heavy for a performance build after we found out that one man can pick up and carry a 904 TorqueFlite around with his bare hands and it takes at least two people to lift an A518. I really can not overstate how heavy that thing is for an aluminum cased transmission. If I didn't know better I'd say the case was made of lead LoL
@OldeCarrGuy
@OldeCarrGuy 5 жыл бұрын
Well then... I’ll keep it in mind for sure! Cruise control will definitely aid in the fuel economy as I’ll be able to keep a steady speed! I just hate poking along! I’m sure there’s a happy medium in there somewhere! I appreciate the input as always!
@peteloomis8456
@peteloomis8456 4 жыл бұрын
@@Impactjunky The A518 isn't that heavy they are nothing more than a 727 with a 4th gear added & a lock up converter ! I have a 71 Dodge D100 utility line that has a 8-3/4 rear with a 3:55 sure grip with a 727 done up with a manual valve body & a 3,000 flash speed converter with a mild pump gas 440 that made 530 HP on the Dyno & I had no problems staying with any traffic . If I remember with the tire combo I have on the back & the engine was tached at about 2,300 RPM at 60 mph which isn't terrible . I did one year bust the speedometer cable off one time in second gear once the speedometer hit 100 mph & it was still pulling hard up to 7,000 RPM's on the hiways before I finally shift to 3rd then let out of it so they aren't a bad gear at all ! Most of the Mopar muscle cars back in the day were using a 3:55 as it's a good all around gear for cruising & performance compared to the 3:90 or 4:10 - 4:11 options . 273- 3:23 are more used in the luxo Chryslers with small blocks & for people who want fuel mileage rather than performance which great for the hiways but a slug in the performance world & the 3:55 is right in between & when used with a 400 or 440 that makes good torque & HP it's a great combo .
@Impactjunky
@Impactjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@@peteloomis8456 I can tell you have never tried to lug them both around before. That extra gear and added overall length adds a LOT of weight and thus there is a massive difference between an A518 and a 904. According to google a dry 904 with a converter in it weighs about 129 pounds and a dry A518 with a converter in it weighs about 213. It's nearly a 100 pound difference and likely even more considering the bigger trans holds more fluid. The 904 also robs significantly less power on the way to the wheels because it isn't exhausting the engine spinning all that extra mass. With nearly 100 extra pounds and the increased horsepower loss swapping to an A518 from a 904 or even a 727 will make the vehicle noticeably slower. The added weight and lost power might even negatively affect your efficiency at speeds below the OD gears operating range. The only thing that trans is good for is a massive heavy duty truck with low axle gears. Your truck sounds badass too but I'd like to race it with my Satellite. I'm making about 100 less HP than you without spray but I'm not wasting near as much of it on the way to the wheels and my small block 904 car is much lighter than your big block A518 full frame truck. The old school B bodies are well known for hooking up and launching while pickups are well known for traction problems so that 100 extra HP is gonna hurt you more than help you for the first 60 feet. Do you wanna run me in the 8th? I'll put a hundred bucks on it. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy new year by the way!

Sorry but your app is way off. There’s no way that car is doing a mid 13 second quarter mile. 8 second 0 - 60 and 13.5 in the quarter just don’t jive. Of the two the 8 second 60 is closer to accurate, but still a little optimistic I believe. Invest in a Dragy GPS Performance Meter, $150. They are very accurate, within a couple of hundredths and a tenth of a mph. I just tried mine at the track and it was within .02 sec. and .13 mph of the track time slip.

This is why you need to dyno your engine after every mod. Your just guessing.

Easier said than done my friend! There aren’t any dynos available locally. That’s why I take advantage of this mobile machine when it comes to this annual car show. Even then it’s still 70 miles away. Thanks for the tuning tip though.

@@OldeCarrGuy Wow, that sux. I'm in South Miami, and there are many roller dynos around in these rental bays that have popped up everywhere in Miami. Most of my Mopar exp was on B and RB engines...[383/440] but I troubleshot a 360 Lean Burn that the dealer couldn't fix. I wound up putting an aftermarket distributor and replacing the carb with one from an older car, it was adjustable, I recurved the distributor for 26 deg centrifical advance, 12 deg BTDC static timing, 38 deg total and 2800 rpm, 3 jet sizes up. a "test pipe" replaced the cat. My customer was so happy he gave me a nice bag full of kind bud and took off in his '79 Magnum. I'm wondering, are you still using the stock TC in your Torqueflite? I put an aftermarket TC with a 2800 rpm stall, and a new valve body in the A727 in my '70 Chally, which really helped my hole shots. Your 1/4 mile times are close to that of a stock 5 speed 5.7 HEMI, your hole shots are...not. Based on a weight of 3600 lbs, 14 sec ET and 3 speed Torqueflite, I will guesstimate your rwh on a dyno to be well over 300 hp--at least twice that of a stock mil... How much did the new heads cost? Does Mopar still have the Direct Connection?
@OldeCarrGuy
@OldeCarrGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@crankychris2 I'll do my best to answer everything. Lean burn is gone but using stock distributor & ignition. The TC is/was new when i had built the trans, however I do believe its stock. Engine is bored .030 and the heads, they are 340 J Heads off a 70 dart. Bigger valves and longer runners and smaller 64cc chambers. Cam is a mild Magnum series cam from Comp .480 lift, .280 dur, 110 LSA. Rear gear is a 3.21 sure grip. Don't get me wrong, the car works very well, chirps the tires going into second, toads of top end just not the numbers i expected. It dyno'd at 219 rwhp.

@@OldeCarrGuy I think better ignition on your custom mill would help you stabilize your tuning. Have you tuned your new carb yet? Swapping heads from a pre 1972 motor is still a popular power upgrade, especially now that 93 octane fuel is everywhere. With all the work you've done, yeah, the power seems low. But with new heads, cam, intake/exhaust, bored out block, etc. it would be a miracle if your carb is jetted exactly right. If this was mine, first I'd pull all 8 plugs and 'read' them. Black/sooty is too rich. Tan is good. Light grey/white indicates a too lean mixture. Not good. With the plugs out, do a cold compression test...you never know! Try to find a good carb man with an exhaust analyzer. My gut says your engine mods increased the air flowing thru your engine now you may need more fuel to compensate. If you are a DIYer, you can rent or possibly borrow one. Good luck, I think tuning and timing will reveal more power. Check the distributor's timing curve. Most factory distributors in the smog era have not enough advance built in. Lean Burn used spark retard when the cat con runs too hot or the engine vacuum drops too low. Mopar V-8's like about 36-38 deg advance, all in by 3,000 rpm. I subscribed to see how this saga turns out!
