0-Coast and Korg SQ-1, Part 1: Introduction

This short series of videos will explore using the 0-Coast with the versatile SQ-1 sequencer from Korg. The SQ-1 MIDI output connects directly to the 0-Coast’s MIDI input using a simple TRS cable, with no adapters or DIN cable needed.

I ended up here looking for demos of the SQ-1, and this is by far the most straightforward demo I've been looking for. Every other demo basically explains what a step sequencer is and ends it there. If you're in the market for a step sequencer, you probably know what a step sequencer is. Make Noise demos are always just inspiring too. I LOVE the sequence going in the demo of the Mysteron. I'll constantly go back to that video just for some inspiration.

Well it was gonna be the Morphagene I had mentioned but I found a mint 0-Coast and jumped on it. Wanted it since I started in modular (Morphagene also)...just stellar. Patched last night and couldn't tear myself away even though I'd worked all day. 0-Ctrl next. Thanks for all the inspiration

When I connect my 0 Coast to the SQ1 with CV and Gate the envelope doesn't work, any idea why this is? I would like to use the midi in to receive clock from another machine.

This pairing was magic when I had the chance to fiddle with them at NAMM. The 0-Coast is so versatile that my first instinct was to get both channels going in weird ways, so can't wait for the next video. Looking for help. My Roland Compact J6 works fine connecting to SQ-1 via midi but won’t connect using the sync in out option or the cv/gate outs. Shouldn’t one of these options also sync to the SQ-1?

As far as I could see, the J6 does not have connectivity other than MIDI.

How do you select the key center that the SQ-1's scales are based around? Considering a 0-Coast after I fried my Werkstatt and its not as obvious to me how to control this thing

That depends on what you are trying to do. In most cases either tune by ear or tune 0-Coast so that when SQ-1 (or whatever controller) sends a C, it plays a C. Feel free to contact technical at makenoisemusic dot com with any specific questions!

Why can't I get the default sound? My O Coast doesn't work without cables. Is this normal?

You need either a) a MIDI cable at the input and the Dynamics attenuator turned up or b) an offset or envelope patched to Dynamics CV in, and Dynamics attenuator turned up. If you still have trouble, please e-mail technical at makenoisemusic dot com and we will help you out.

it's just a little bit simpler to patch for the video when using it for the same purpose. i usually use cv/gate because of greater flexibility :)

Thanks for the tutorial! For some reason nothing is happening when I plug the SQ-1's midi out to the 0-coast's midi in. What could I be doing wrong?

Two possibilities come to mind: 1. make sure the cable you are using is TRS-to-TRS (this is different from a standard patch cable). 2. Make sure the 0-Coast is receiving on the channel the SQ-1 is sending (set 0-Coast MIDI A to ALL on the Learn page to be sure). This is great if you compose in only c minor or c major. if I'm missing something, please someone let me know. "5. Scales are limited to C Major and C minor; you can’t change root or transpose. Chris correctly points out that this is fairly limiting. You can’t change the root note. The KORG engineer who designed the SQ-1′s functionality here told us somewhat apologetically that he had only two buttons for selection, though, so he didn’t have much choice. This sounds like a deal killer, maybe, but it isn’t - provided your outboard gear has a transposition function. If it does, you can transpose on the synth rather than the SQ-1. And if you want more scales, you may want to consider a more advanced sequencer - or software."

You could patch a KB CV to the 1V/ Octave In on 0-COAST and use that to transpose the MIDI sequence from the SQ1. For example the Arturia Keystep outputs a standard 1V/ octave Keyboard type CV.

Thank you for the tip! Appreciated. Have been using a Novation Circuit for sequencing the 0-coast but I am interesting in the SQ-1 for the additional features.

If you have the Novation Circuit, you should consider using the SQ1 purely for the CV and Gate outputs while using the Circuit to run your melodic midi sequences. We will do another video soon which shows how the SQ1 could be used for sequential modulation (rather than melodic sequences).
