In a song all about the townspeople celebrating the death of someone they never tried to understand, it's insanely refreshing to see an animatic that does not let you forget that that Elphaba is a person, undeserving of the dehumanization she faced for her entire perceived life.

But her mom tries to make her life normal and happy,but of course we all know what happens to Elphaba...she died may Elphaba rest in peace she had a hard life but a wonderful mother a good friend. ❤

To be fair, the entire media of Oz was twisting her story to make them hate her. The people were ignorant, but they trusted what they were told by higher ups. To them, there was nothing to understand but someone with a scary appearance who came across as malevolent. Elphaba is not the best PR person for herself, either. Add that on to her sister being cruel to the Munchkin Country and its no wonder.

One detail I love is that the second time "the wicked die alone" is sung, the chorus sings "the wicked die alone" like Glinda did the first time the line was sung- but Glinda herself sings _"She_ died alone" instead. It's something you probably won't notice the first time around, but is a clever detail that offers a chink in her cheery demeanor- hinting at how she's actually mourning Elphaba (despite the whole 'no one mourns the wicked' thing), foreshadowing the fact that she was Elphaba's friend.

i saw someone say that when glinda sings “and goodness knows, the wicked’s lives are lonely. goodness knows, the wicked die alone. it just shows, when you’re wicked, you’re left only on your own.” it was a moment of reflection for her- because it was there where she kind of realizes that the one who is truly all alone, the true wicked one is herself for essentially contributing to the big lie that elphaba was evil.

All of this is utterly breathtaking, but I want to highlight a detail I haven't seen any other comment mention. The first thing we ever see of Elphaba is not her birth like in the play and other animatics, where the focus is on her abnormality and the prejudice in response to it, but her reaching out for her mother and crying. Exactly the same as any other baby. You redirect our attention from the external idea that she's a freak, an outcast, a monster, to the unmistakable reality that she's a person like everyone else. This is the "wicked" the whole song's been condemning and fearing - a tiny hand outstretched, seeking love. The dissonance is fantastic. It's such an impactful introduction to our protagonist.

6:21- I love this moment here. The sheer silence of it, the focus on the bundle about to be consumed by the wave, and the blank look of manic desperation to remove a stain upon one's name and reputation on the face of Elphaba's mother melting away, to be replaced by the softened expression of maternal instinct taking over to protect her child, no matter her flaws real or perceived. EDIT: In general, I really like the concept that, when Elphaba was born, her mother was initially as shocked and disgusted as her husband and their neighbors were, but when faced with the moment of truth, found she truly loved her daughter, warts and all, and couldn't bring herself to get rid of her.

how STUNNING. The part where Glinda reaches out and the glass shatters into the 'real' Elphaba ugh my HEART. The entire scene with the ending storm and mother especially is so visceral. At the end...that giant wave comes up and in that moment, all reputation or social anxieties fly out the window, the only thing she can do is 'react' and she does by shielding and protecting her child. I remember seeing her, on stage, reach out for her newborn child, regardless of the deformities. So yeah, that fits right in with the story here. I especially love the nod to the 1939 movie. Holy crap, when I got recommended a Wicked animatic I was not expecting this! Absolutely stunning work in every frame! Here are some of my absolute favorite parts: - The opening: It reminds me a lot of the stage productions I saw in the theater, especially the clock on the background. Also the stain glass window was a really great way to quickly set up the Wizard of Oz story. - Glinda's lines after "you know who": With her expressions and mannerisms after that point, it seems like she's instead saying lines like "good will conquer evil" and "outlive a lie" to comfort herself, maybe believing that someday people will somehow know who Elphaba, not the Wicked Witch, truly was. Of course the juxtaposition to the townsfolk celebrating her death was both beautiful and cruel. - Glinda and the stained glass window: The way the world switches to Glinda's own thoughts while thinking back to Elphaba was beautiful. It seems like this whole scene Glinda is talking directly to Elphaba and thinking back to their second to last moment together, maybe believing that everything could have turned out better if she had joined Elphaba. - Elphaba's mom: The expression on the face of Elphaba's mother already seems like she's slightly nervous about getting caught but also maybe rethinking her affair, maybe after seeing the concern her husband has for her. - The moment of Elphaba's birth: We don't see Elphaba herself (as most animatics do) but cut to an intimidating statue of a child (5:11). It immediately makes Elphaba seem like some monstrous, almost evil entity, which is the other characters view her, only to show her true humanity and form at the end of the song when she reaches out to her mother. - The whole sequence with Elphaba's mom after (5:28): It feels completely perfect when the music and ensemble pick up while Elphaba's mother flees into the streets with her child. She is already marginalized by her society, which probably sees her as having birthed a monster and would label her "wicked". And the ashamed, broken expression on her face as she rides out towards the cliff is perfect. - The cliff: This was definitely not something I expected in a Wicked animatic, but the music, expressions, and scene of Elphaba's mother about to throw Elphaba off the cliff was absolutely breathtaking. And when the wave comes up onto the cliff, all of the anger, marginalization, and social pressure in Elphaba's mother goes out the window and she just reacts by shielding and protecting her child. As Maidenofmine put it, a mother's love even through the hardships. You really gave Elphaba's mother so much depth with just a few scenes, making her someone who was cast out and marginalized from society from birthing a "monster" but who still deeply cared about and protected her daughter, no matter what happened to her. - Elphaba baby reveal: As mentioned earlier, we already got the view of everyone else seeing Elphaba as a monster and freak. Just having her reach out to her mother and cry like any baby tells us that she is a person just like anyone else, simply labeled an outcast because of something she can't control. This is probably the best animatic I've seen for this song, so great work! Only bad thing is that it makes me a but nervous about the live action version. Good luck on your job hunt and I sincerely hope it goes well!
@AlexisFinnertyАй бұрын
Someone probably mentioned this already, but this reminds me a lot of Hunchback of Notre Dame (the Disney movie version). Elphaba's story is really similar to Quasimodo's, so that was a nice parallel. I loved how dramatic this was too, with the huge waves and the cliff at the end.

This needs to be the wicked movie. not a live action. live action has never been able to capture the drama that comes with musical theater but this did so perfectly. the expressions, the movements, the coloring choices. i didn't realize i had stopped breathing until the end when the weight on my chest released and i took a breath and then cried. this was awe inspiring. incredible!

i was already planning to rewatch this, so this is great :DD i genuinely keep thinking about this animatic- i've never listened to the wicked soundtrack through before, but i will soon in preparation for whatever animatic you post next! it's easy to enjoy this song when you practically have a movie of an animatic that plays in my head when i hear it. i wasn't one of the people bothered by the lights, but thank you for being so considerate of your viewers!

Hello Leona Kim! Thank you very much for returning to my channel and watching my animatic again! ^^ I truly appreciate it!! I'm sure you are going to like other WICKED musical songs as well, because they all sounds wonderful! For the flash light issue, I remember Pokemeon series and Incredibles 2 also had problem with it, and I wanted to be more careful! This one was good lesson for me as an artist!

The editing, the framing, the pacing, the semiotics, the character study. Your work is much more complex, emotional and clever in directing than the multi millionaire hollywood adaptation which is bland in every way. Congratulations! Loved it. Wish the movie had a small amount of this kind of talent.

That animatic was so damn perfect from the raw emotions on Gylinda as she expresses her regret towards Elphaba to the use of silence before the choir sings “WICKED” and how it introduces our antagonist, what a brilliant sense of direction you have!

This is the best animatic I've seen for this song. The animation and facial expressions are amazing. I can feel the pain through Glina now realising she made a bad decision. How the mother reacts to basically everything. Also I love how Glinda's grief is shown. It's all really great.

Okay, but something I love is that when she is talking about wickedness in the beginning, she doesn't specifically say the wicked witch. She says 'the wicked workings of you-know-who' or 'let us rejoice that good triumphs' or stuff like that. When she's talking like that, it's almost as if she isn't talking about Elphaba at all.

This is one of the most stunning things I’ve ever seen! If there could be an animated movie, I’d want you to help create/storyboard it. Also, wow, that ending! Also also, I’d love to see Kristen Chenoweth (the original Glinda)’s reaction!

@florae.gardens6 күн бұрын
at 6:56, after the long pause--the ensemble sings "the wicked", referring to elphaba. but with the way you've done this animatic further shows how dehumanized elphaba has been her whole life; the townspeople are talking about their perceptions of elphaba, and how she is wicked--and it's juxtaposed to the image of elphaba who is merely a baby. it's simply people's perceptions and prejudices that made her 'wicked' in their eyes, which only hurts more when you realize elphaba wasn't a monster or some evil villain the world made her up to be--she was simply a child, who too, cried for her mother.

i abseloutly love this song and the animation but i have to laugh at the fact that when Elphaba is born the nurse and her father sing the line "i see a nose, i see a curl, it's a healthy lovely little-" and then they get taken back by Elphaba's green skin. but wait a minute- if they saw her nose wouldn't they have noticed that she's green? Ooooorrrr- was her nose a "normal colour" and that's why they didn't get scared.!?!?!?!?!? I NEED ANWSERS!😂❤
