LOL Andreas, here we say "there's no replacement for displacement". Regarding that Siglent spectrum analyzer - excellent score on the domestic front, demonstrates superior diplomatic skills!

@@HB9BLA My apologies! The first sentence refers to your remark @11:59. It is an expression we use here in the USA to say the same thing about engine displacement. The second sentence refers to @10:22 and is congratulating you for your skill at convincing your wife of the need for the spectrum analyzer. I'd call that "domestic diplomacy".

That spectrum analyzer was cheap compared to the Harley. :D I'm a retired EE, never worked RF other then susceptibility and emissions for avionics compliance (spent career designing for compliance and doing the shake-bake tests). Very deep notches in the COMM bands for emissions. And very high susceptibility levels for HIRF compliance. I worked for Collins radio. Always learning new things from your channel, Thank You!

Indeed, these instruments became affordable. I already see that more DIY antennas are built because people see now if they perform. We had Collins Radios during my military service, of course :-)

One other difference between the spectrum analyzer and the power meter is that the power meter will give you the total power over the measurement range, including harmonics and any other spurious signals. Not surprising to see it giving a higher value! Anyway, looking forward to the next episode

When I did my apprenticeship in the late 70's, 0dBm=1mW into a 600 ohm load. Back then this was the impedance used for telecommunication systems. Not sure what the effect is on 50 ohm systems, but if you aren't looking for voltage or current values, it probably doesn't matter.
@HB9BLA
@HB9BLA 2 жыл бұрын
0dBm is still 1mW independent of the impedance. The voltage probably was a little higher on a 600 ohms line...

I never tried to calculate it. Too much unknown things. On 2.4GHz the opening of the Poty feed is bigger than the diameter of the antenna.

Great video. A minor point, I would try not to put to much weight on the N-type connector that is on the front of your spectrum analyser. I have seen those become intermittent with a setup like the one you used with the 2W and the 20W attenuators, maybe a support of some sort? You could put some plywood under the spectrum analyser to extend the shelf out and then use some small pieces of wood to supports it.

Very valid point! I have repaired more than one instrument/device ( not N-connector though ) where the physical load of connected devices made internal soldering connections go bad. Use a short pigtail if in doubt. If necessary it can in many cases be calibrated to "disappear".

Hello Andreas, this video brings you near the quality of W2AEW. I'm not a ham, though, but always impressed, how you do complicated projects with simple means. I also learnt a bit of Schwizerdütsch, it's obviously very different to German. "auf Zusehen hin" first meant to me that the communication authority first made a visual inspection of your setup, but it just means 'provisional'. Very non-bureaucratic indeed. What technical skills do they need to give the approval on such scarce information? And the term 'allfällig' is also really nice.

Indeed, Swiss German has lots of very different words. Many coming also from French: Pneu=Reifen, Trottoir=Gehsteig, Balance=Lenker etc.

Excellent episode Andreas, really apreciate your channels! You should ve taken a look at SG-Labs from Blgaria , he makes suited amps for qo100 and the Puto for 138€... and I suppose far better quality than the stuff from Ali. I m using the terrestrial one as i not only tend to use the stuff for qo100 only. (That one is not on the webpage) I am still good enough, just below Leila with around 12W Pout and my 80cm dish. Btw using his transverter as well). 73 Felix
