Just as a viper relies on its venomous fangs and a hornet its stinger to deliver a lethal attack on adversaries, so too do modern combat fighter aircraft depend on guided missiles and cannon fire to engage aerial foes.
But what guidance methods do missiles use? How difficult is it to effectively employ the gun on a non-cooperative target? And how far, exactly, can the AIM-120C AMRAAM be employed against a non-maneuvering fighter-size target when both the shooter and target are at Mach 1 and above 30,000 feet?
…okay, we don’t answer that last one. In fact, for the die-hard technology and tactics buffs out there-fair warning: we avoid specific details because, more so than any other topic yet discussed on this show, information on air-to-air missiles is jealously guarded to maintain an advantage against potential foes.
Join our first US Air Force guest, Major Trevor Boswell, as we discuss the AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM, and M-61A1 Vulcan Canon-weapons common to all US ‘teen-series’ fighters. We discuss guidance methods, employment considerations, and how we employ (and simulate employing) these weapons in training.
During the listener question segment we discuss training with foreign forces, whether a fear of drones is warranted, and if it is common to still see unfamiliar faces among a carrier crew of 5,000 sailors several months into deployment.

Ok, this is gold... This jet you're using for this vid is none other than my old jet I was CC on from 96-99 at Cannon AFB, 524FS, 27th FW and on top of that the vid was uploaded on my B-day. Haha, nice!

Really love this podcast! I’m a Marine Air Traffic Controller and I’ve always been fascinated by tactical aircraft. Is it true that “Highway to the Danger Zone” constantly plays on loop in the cockpit of fighter type aircraft, or does it only start playing at a certain speed?

Not so much in the cockpit as in the pilot's heads...

the Sidewinder was so named *not* because of any tendency to a corkscrew flight path but because the sidewinder IRL (i.e. the snake of that name, aka horned rattlesnake) uses heat sensing organs to detect prey.

Having now got far enough ahead with the show that Boat is a regular co-host I decided I just had to come back to this one to remind myself how he got his callsign, since it had been at least a year since I heard this episode for the first time. Wasn't disappointed.

Speaking of carrying multiple AIM-120s, the new F15X can apparently carry 22 or 24 (I forget which one) of them, which is crazy! :-)

Seems plausible. At some point, unmanned aircraft should assume the role of 'missile truck.'

Very interesting. Learned a lot about air to air weapons. As an electronics engineer this is very eye opening.

So generally speaking in the dead of night with no moon out, a sidewinder would(could?) track a IR source through a cloud being it is the hottest element in the cloud, right?

Hey there Jello, listening to your backlog, and as a former machinegunner (USMC/0331) I just wish to point out that a five or six second burst with the m61 shouldn't be that bad for the cannon, since while 100 Rounds Per Second sounds like a lot you have to devide it by 6 which is about 16-17 RPS per barrel, now there are machine guns used by infantry and leg portable, that shoots at a higher rate, the MG-3 has 20 RPS and while it is not good practices for the barrel, to shoot for five seconds straight it is not too bad or detrimental if you don't do it repeatedly in quick succession. Now coupled with that a fighter plane tends to operate in colder enviroments than at sea/ground level, the issues with a five second burst is lessened even further. Conversly the muzzle velocity of the 20x102mm, at ca 1030 m/s, is about 20% higher than 7.62x51mm at ca 860 m/s.

Both men and women have both testosterone & estrogen (in different proportions) in their systems, at the same time. In both sexes, testosterone levels have an effect on aggressiveness. IDK: Go back & have that talk with your dad again? I know Jello makes these malapropisms all the time, but the statement wasn’t 100% wrong as it stands.
