Hello ASL Heroes!!! I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Or, if you prefer "Cash App" you can use: cash.me/$Lifeprint Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. thank you so much for these videos, I love them! I have a deaf cousin that's coming over for Thanksgiving, so I watched this video over and over until I knew the whole thing, it was really helpful! I've been learning ASL from your videos, but I hadn't gotten this far yet. I love sign language, I hope to be fluent some day!
@hannahschmuker98325 жыл бұрын
also there's a deaf boy at my school, and he gets teased a lot. No one knows sign language, so he can't really talk to anyone but his interpreter. We're both really quiet and shy, but I think we could be friends. I fingerspell stuff when I'm bored, so I can go really fast, and I see writing in sign language, if that makes sense. Like, I see what the sign for every letter is. Anyway, I think that's it, thank you again for all of your videos, and I love your sense of humor!

Hannah! You be BOLD! This shy business is the subconscious' way of trying to protect you. Tell your subconscious "thank you" but that you don't need protecting from the opinions or laughter of others. Then tell your subconscious that if it want to actually be helpful then it should get busy propelling you forward to grasp and thoroughly relish every wonderful opportunity that comes your way. I guarantee you that a few years after "school" is over you'll look back and be amazed that you ever gave the opinions of others a single gram of weight. You'll wish you had "went for it!" Give your future you a priceless gift: Don't wait for someone to give you permission to be the person you want to be. You pick you! I'm pleased to see you are choosing to learn to communicate with a whole new set of people with a different culture and way of approaching life. Good for you! Keep it up! - Dr. Bill

Is there a sign for uplift or do you just finger spell it?
@sign-language3 жыл бұрын
Its going to depend on which specific meaning of uplift you are intending -- as well as the context. Examples: (Forgive the caps, I'm not yelling -- we just tend to capitalize the labels of signs.) INSPIRE CHEERFUL MOTIVATE SUPPORT ELEVATE (i.ytimg.com/vi/la-KEj4yghs/hqdefault.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEcCNACELwBSFXyq4qpAw4IARUAAIhCGAFwAcABBg==&rs=AOn4CLCFZZkiXKAhW8CQIHDZ3KzwH1OXdg) This type of question would be a good fit for the LIfeprint-ASLU Facebook group. Wait, is the sign for overachiever both of those put together or is there two versions, and it can be either/or?
@lithiumcrush4 жыл бұрын
No it’s both of them together. It’s actually three signs. He signed over and then achieve and then person (which is how you sign the suffix “er” in asl.) :)

Love your videos so much! Learning tons. Question - Can "now" be signed with one hand ??
@sign-language5 жыл бұрын
Almost anything can be signed with one hand as long as you are holding a sandwich in the other hand. Over time it is common to see signs evolve to one-handed forms -- especially now that folks are holding their phone with one hand and signing to their friend or partner with the other hand via videoconferencing software. Would I advise a student to sign NOW with one hand? No. Because his local teacher might have some sort of "expectation level." Would I bat an eyelash if one of my buddies signed NOW with one hand -- nope. It wouldn't bother me a bit and I reckon we will all see the one handed version become more and more common over time. Did you ask the question because you are seeing NOW done "one handed?"
@stephaniekilleen48865 жыл бұрын
@@sign-language No. I actually don't know anyone who is deaf nor do I take any classes to learn asl. (I wish!) I just love the language and have been teaching myself by watching your videos. Anyway, the reasoning behind my question is very ridiculous and I'm honestly embarrassed to even say why. I have a deformed pinky finger that I'm super self conscious about. Dumb, I know. It bothers me so much that I'm teaching myself to sign with my nondominent hand which has actually been easier than I thought. Anyway, thank you so much for taking time to answer my question, even if it's silly. There are far worse things than a crooked little pinky. Your videos rock!
@sign-language5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the backstory. If and when you do get involved with the Deaf community you will find that many of us have "secondary" challenges or issues with our bodies. Thus we tend to not care much about body parts that don't work perfectly. Get old enough and nearly everything stops working.
@Fred-h4p5 жыл бұрын
@@stephaniekilleen4886 There is nothing silly about that question. And every Deaf person I have chatted with, especially on video conference often uses one hand to sign. It took a lot of practice to get used to understanding them, but you can do it.

Just started the ASL course on the SuperUSB (loving the course, learned so much already) and realize I may have a problem. I cannot bend my left ring finger without the little finger bending most of the way too, so signing things like 'this' in 'this year' is difficult. Though it never interferes with day to day life (thus never really noticed it before), will it affect being able to sign clearly in certain situations?
