PENDLE HILL WALK FEATURING BARLEY, OGDEN RESERVOIRS AND NEWCHURCH-IN-PENDLE
"Proud in Pendle"
Filmed 26th May 2015
Post-production completed 20th June 2015
Pendle Hill was a location which first drew my attention from watching a video on the “Walking with the Taxi Driver” website. I decide to visit this delightful spot in Lancashire for myself, where I discover a little of “Pendle Witch Country” and tackle the strenuous but rewarding climb up Pendle Hill.
Filmed in the county of Lancashire. Locations include Barley, Newchurch-in-Pendle, Ogden Reservoirs and Pendle Hill. This is the first film in the Forest of Bowland.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

DISCLAIMER: Although I work hard to ensure all information is correct to the best of my knowledge, I am only featuring information I have found online during my research when putting this film together, so I cannot guarantee that there are no mistakes or errors.
As with all the films I make, this is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I might share some of my own personal stories, and not actually intended to be a guide to the area.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler

I live in nearby Burnley and walk Pendle hill often. To me it is a magical place with many different routes to take to and from the summit. Going up the route taken in this film takes approx. 1 hour. I was very happy to find this on KZbin. Thanks for making it.

Thanks to your video, I'm going to Barley this morning. I'll walk until I get a view of the climb. Then turn back. It's going to be the hottest day today. I'll do the climb in cooler weather. I want to do it before my 75th birthday in sept 19.

I know this is one of your older videos but I had to watch as it brought back so many memories, I did this walk around 1990 and I can remember the hill climb took the breath out of me and I was a lot fitter then too, they say don't look back but I think what inspired me to keep plodding on was stopping and having an occasional look to see how far I'd made it, it was one of them "I'm not turning back now" moments :) but the hike was worth it because the views from up there were absolutely breathtaking, I chose a day that was a little overcast but at least it didn't pour down, you were fortunate to have quite good weather which makes all the difference. It's a really lovely place and one of my favourites along with Hawarth the home of the Bronte family which I remember being the first video I watched of yours, but since then it's just been pure pleasure to watch some of your fantastic journeys and not one has been disappointing. I sometimes go into fantasy mode and feel I could easily just leave everything behind and escape to some of these fantastic places and never look back, you don't have to travel out too far to see some absolutely beautiful countryside but then (unfortunately) I have to wake up to reality and be grateful that at least we can get lost in the moment by each one of your most enjoyable and interesting uploads which really do give the feeling that we are actually there with you. Thank you Patrick for bringing the beauty of the country to our homes. Be safe wherever you travel. Vivien 😊👍

Thanks for watching this one Vivien. This was back in 2015 when I was here filming this, can't believe where the time has gone to be honest! I remember finding the climb very hard indeed, but as you have said it was certainly worth it for all the wonderful views to be enjoyed from the top. I had been filming in Haworth the day before I came here and had stopped over in Halifax that night before making my journey to Barley the following morning. I was lucky with the weather when I was here as I recall I was staying overnight for a few days in Clitheroe, so my Pendle Hill walk was my first day in the area before arriving in Clitheroe. This is actually one of my personal favourites so I'm pleased this is one that brought so many memories for you. Thanks again Vivien. Cheers, Patrick :)

I came across your videos only a few days ago and they have brought back wonderful memories of my childhood years during the 1940's and 50's when I lived in the Pendle Hill area about a mile from Newchurch. In those days we spent a lot more time walking and I walked up Pendle Hill at the age of 3, and a few years later, with my older brother John, ignored the usual path and scrambled straight up the middle of the hill. Years later my wife and I enjoyed the area immensely and our son, Robert also climbed the hill when he was 3. We are very familiar with the villages all around Pendle Hill and also with the villages and locations mentioned in your other videos: Magnetism of Malhamdale, Waterfalls of Wensleydale, Bolton Abbey to Burnsall, etc. My wife and I are in our 80's now and are unable to travel, so your videos are a great joy to us. If only I could write to you about our experiences in the Pendle area and the Yorkshire Dales. Very many thanks.

My late father, Ralph Pickett, a lifelong Quaker from Pennsylvania in the States, once climbed Pendle Hill. I don't know what year it was, but my parents were making a tour of sites associated with early Quakerism. When my father saw Pendle Hill, he just had an "urge" to climb it, as George Fox had had many years before. My late mother, Margaret Pickett, elected not to climb it. I don't know whether she stayed at the Pendle Inn or somewhere else while my father made the climb. If I had been there, I probably would have wanted to make the climb with my father. I doubt that there was any prescribed track or tracks to follow at that time, but it is a good idea to have them. I will have to search in my father's diaries and letters in my possession to find the year of his climb and to read any comments he had on the experience. Peggy Pickett Roeske, June 3, 2024

Another cracking walk in this area is Boulsworth Hill/Lad Law from Wycoller. A personal favourite, with stunning views across Lancashire & the Pennines dropping away to the east, also Bronte connections at Wycoller. Highly recommended. Congrats on this superb series of videos BTW, have you thought of contacting local tv channels, like Live in Leeds, for example, they might be interested in broadcasting your Yorkshire walks.

Thank you for your nice comments and helpful advice! I do contact local community groups, Facebook groups and other parties relating to where I've filmed. For instance, with this video I contacted This is Lancashire and the Forest of Bowland AONB. Most of them never respond to be honest, but there have been the odd few who have shown interest which has resulted in those few videos being seen by a lot more people.

We are starting to watch the films that we first discovered your channel on , Patrick , thats why its the second time , were adding comments my mate ...This one is very special to us because as you know we made Our Climb last year and i added my own video , Which i know you have seen on facebook , Theres something very special about this part of the country and i am not just saying that because we are based in lancashire , Pendle hill and its surrounding countryside , seems to cast a spell literally on anybody who passes this way ,i ve never known anybody who has climbed this hill and not been touched or taken aback by the splendid views that lay before you , and the surrounding villages of Barley where we visited the tea room , famously used by Billy Connelly during his world tour of England ,Ireland and Wales and the nearby village of Newchurch , simply took our breath away ....Close to Newchurch , theres a old quarry where a face as been carved into one the rock s , looks awesome and a touch mystical , I am glad you walked this trip and saw for yourself some of the wonderful sights that we do have this side of the Pennines ....Like yourself we do enjoy Walking with the taxi , driver ..and along with his film , yours did the area a great service in the way you covered it ... Thank you again Patrick ... Frank and Lee .....

This film is special to me too. Firstly because it's another video the results of which I'm particularly happy with and secondly I found it to be a really lovely part of Lancashire. I had never heard of any of these places in my film before watching the videos of the area made by "The Taxi Driver" so it was great when I finally went here myself. I thought Barley was a lovely village. I do remember that the climb up Pendle Hill almost killed me, but it was so worth it once I reached the top! The whole walk was nice though and I did enjoy the route to Newchurch. After I completed the walk that day I drove on to Clitheroe as I was booked for 3 nights in a B&B. I returned to Barley that evening and had a meal in the Pendle Inn. Had the "Pendle Pie" which was rather like cottage pie but with chunks of meat as opposed to mince. I will certainly return to Barley one day. Thanks as always for watching Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)

Hi Patrick. Just found your beautiful, informative ideos and have subscribed, as your walks are almost all within driving distance from me, (South Manchester). Pendle Hill has been on my mental to do list for a few years. I always go for a long walk on Christmas day. Least busiest day on the roads, plus I can't stand suffering Christmas telly on my own. So weather permitting, Pendle is where I'll be!
