Whilst staying in Lancashire for a few days I decide to visit the village and local countryside where one of my favourite films was made. It is an absolute thrill and delight for me to visit some of the filming locations of “Whistle Down the Wind”.
Filmed in the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland in the county of Lancashire. Locations include Clitheroe, Worsaw Hill and Downham.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

I visited Downham, for the umpteenth time, today. If a place can be almost too beautiful, then this was today; the balmy weather adding to the effect no doubt. There is an undefinable atmosphere about this village. It's like walking around a dream.

It's the very first time that I've ever seen any video about Clitheroe and it's surrounding area, Patrick. It seems a very impressive town and especially with the Castle showing its presence - a most unusual building. Downham looks a lovely quaint village, and with none of those pesky aerials about on the buildings. Yes, I bet you were feeling great when you knew that 'Whistle Down The Wind' movie was featured in the village. I too, also loved that film, and the music score. That was another genuine treat. I had no idea Lancashire had so much to offer; Clitheroe and Downham look absolutely charming. I love unspoiled places. Your music score was superb and fitted the scenes to a tee and I loved your use of the Whistle Down the Wind score too. It is a fine film although I haven't seen it in years. Great Job Patrick.

Well this has brought back memories,i lived in Clitheroe in the early 70's and worked for Ribble cement and an Iron Foundry that was situated in the town,it was a great Wee Town to work and live in,Ally

This was brilliant,I get so much information from your films and ideas for weekends away with the wife,or solitary rambles. I knew nothing of Clitheroe,didn't even know what sort of place it is,but it looks a great place to stay. I'd never even heard of Downham,but what a gorgeous place,like it's stood still in time,no wonder they do lots of filming there,it looks like you could film an episode of Dads Army or something there tomorrow and all you wou would have to do was move the cars,it must have been amazing for you to stand there at the places so familiar from Whistle down the wind. A special mention for the music,I love how you take a theme and change it slightly,but it's still recognisable,like you did on the Holmfirth film,and again here today. Thanks so much. Pete.

I was very excited about going to film this one because of "Whistle Down the Wind", then I ended up adding Clitheroe at the beginning as that was a nice place too as well as where I was staying for a few days a that time. If your going this way you could also look at the Trough of Bowland,which is Lancashire's answer to the Dales but without the tourists.

Patrick. This video is another reason why I am giving up on TV. I like to see programmes about places that I might visit, but on TV these are always fronted by celebrities who take up time talking to 'interesting' locals and then 'try their hand' at some local activity. So the location itself is really only a background. This video about Clitheroe, by contrast, is ideal as it gives the basic information that any visitor would need. And it gives a good impression about what to find in the area. Well Done again.

Really enjoyed this video as an ex Clitheronian now residing in New Zealand. I also very much liked Whistle Down the Wind, my friend's cousin was one of the extras. An added bonus was the delivery in the style of Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan would be pleased with this homage.

Absolutely fab Patrick , weve passed thru downham on the way to pendle ,and i pointed out areas to lee where filming took place for whistle down the wind , also one of my fav films too along with a taste of Honey , spring and port wine ,billy lair and the like , around the start of the -1960s there was a clutch of what i now consider Classic British movies , So iknow what you mean about visiting locations whee shooting took , place were visiting Stockport soon to see locations from A taste of Honey .... As for downham were looking at visiting here soon along with chatburn and sawley abbey .... Thanks again Patrick for another great film , also enjoyed the open shoooting around Clitheroe and the castle , that walk around the castle at the top gives wonderful views , we were in Clithero today Visiting nearby Waddington ....Thanks again Frank and Lee ...

It was nice staying in Clitheroe, somewhere completely new for me. As you say the castle gives great views and as you saw I got some brilliant shots from the top. I was especially looking forward to filming in Downham and Worsaw Hill because of its film connections and I just loved it there when I went. It was a gentler day of filming as I was still feeling cream crackered after my climb up Pendle Hill the previous day! Hope you had a nice day in Clitheroe today. I went to Waddington one evening during this stay as I tried to eat in one of the village pubs, but it was so busy I gave up and went back to Clitheroe for fish and chips instead! :-) Glad you enjoyed this Frank and Lee and, as always, thanks for watching. TY very much. Very rewarding to see the video. The very beautiful big girl Hayley Mills was age 15 when the film 'Whistle Down The Wind' was filmed. I was age three (three and a quarter, really). So I guess in a way I always in my younger days had to look up to her. A few years older now and I can tell you he is not the Messiah. He's a fugitive on the run and in hiding.

Most residents will tell you the Winter months are fine in Downham but the Summer months are a bit of a bugbear. Lots of traffic including coaches, visitors peering through your windows, trespassing in your garden. Not being able to let your younger children out due to the many cars and strangers.

The delights of Downham are highlighted in your walk this time around and how lovely is this village. I well remember rushing to our local cinema - now sadly closed - to see the latest Hayley Mills . Whistle Down Yer Wind was the sort of film that one remembered long after that visit to the big screen. Hayley was also brilliant in The Family Way alongside Hwyel Bennett back in the sixties. How lucky we were to live through those fantastic times, Patrick.

As a born and bred Clitheronian, I really enjoyed the film. Just a small point .. Worsaw is pronounced (at least locally) as "Wursa" rather than "Worsaw"
