040217 I45 TRIPLE FATAL

At approximately 3:30am Sunday morning the Harris County Toll Road Office began receiving calls of a wrong way driver at Hardy Toll and the Airport Connector. Units started moving that direction in an attempt to locate the black Dodge Charger. Additional reports were received at Louetta and also Cypresswood. Units attempting to catch up requested dispatchers notify Montgomery County. It was then at 3:43am that the Dodge came off the Hardy entrance ramp heading northbound onto I-45 southbound lanes. Almost immediately the driver struck a white Mercedes head on. MCHD, South Montgomery County Fire, Spring Fire and Cypress Creek EMs responded to the scene. Cypress Creek Medics determined the driver ie Charger was deceased. In addition MCHD Medics determined the driver, a 49-year-old male from Spring and his wife 53 were both deceased in the Mercedes.
According to family on the scene, the deceased male from Spring had been celebrating with his wife and family his birthday which is Monday. THey just finished breakfast at the IHOP on Rayford and I-45. Several vehicles of family members got onto the freeway along with the deceased. Many on the family members witnessed the aftermath. Some stopped, others exited and returned to the scene. All had planned on a big birthday party for the deceased male Sunday Afternoon at Topgolf. They now will be picking up family members who were on flights coming in for the celebration. Some still in the air and not not knowing of the death of their family members. THe male and female will be identified later today. DPS is continuing the investigation and have not yet identified the driver of the Charger. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is assisting in the investigation.

I wish people would realize that the reflectors in the lane markings are 2 different colors. if you are heading the correct direction, they are white. if you are headed in the wrong direction, they are red.

Impaired. That is why you never drive in the passing lane at night unless there is a car ahead of you. For the drunk going the wrong way, your passing lane is the slow lane for him. A cop told me this years ago. One time at night on a freeway we were in our slow lane and a car with no lights sped by us going the wrong way in our passing lane. We’d have died if we had been in that lane. Stay in the right lane at night.

They should show them the videos that we saw when I was in drivers ed. One was very bad and was the result of a DUI and he got the brunt of it. You couldn't tell by the head if he was male or female. They had to use fingerprints for identification. I have had several family members killed by drunk drivers and I think these kids need to know what happens if you drink and drive. None of these ideas are feasible as other drivers still have to use the ramp. Blowing all four tires could result in a bad accident right there, as well. Many ramps have WRONG WAY signs already posted - but people who have been drinking are not going to pay attention.

Even if the wreck itself is survivable, the occupants could suffer sudden heart attacks or strokes and die that way. Also, the shock of the impact, even if the interior isn't crumpled too badly, can kill just by the continued forward movement of organs inside the bodies crashing against interior surfaces. I've seen vehicles that hardly had any damage to them at all, yet the occupant(s) died. Something else was going on that proved fatal for them.

The Dodge is bigger than this Mercedes, but it has oversized aftermarket rims that protruded into the passenger compartment, obviously at very high speed. Chargers will factory equipment do very well in crashes - much better than the old Crown Victoria, for instance (part of the reason why those cars were discontinued).

Not always. I encountered a wrong way driver on a clover leaf type off ramp. I was in the right lane going 60 mph when headlights were coming right at me as they were coming onto the interstate the wrong way. I swerved to my left to avoid a collision. It was like 2:00 a.m. and was picking up my son from work. I can only surmise that it was a drunk driver.

I also think teenagers should be made to listen to victim impact statements in court. I think that may have more of a impact then a gruesome accident. They will hear from the victims family talking about the hole left in their life that once was a daughter/son/brother/sister etc. My bff daughter hit and killed a man back in 2018. The anguish you hear from the family is rough. Her daughter suffered as well over the fact she killed a man, had a massive nervous break down right there in court. The guy she hit was very drunk and high as hell when he stepped out of the trees right in front of her. Shock had her experiencing preterm labor. She was 8 months pregnant at the time.

In Florida, road work crews have begun painting large white arrows (that point in the direction of travel with raised reflectors that make a noise when the tire goes over them) to try to stop wrong way driving fatalities. Anything helps. Lots of wrong way driver crashes here in the Tampa Bay area.

Is there an APP for this? Something to tell us drivers through GPS that a wrong way driver is approaching and what lane they are in. Show us exactly he is so we can get out of the way. The Cops can get them without incident. Build it into our newer cars, phone apps for regular driving. Or light road system that alerts every driver of the oncoming problem which lane and how far away etc. Everyone lives, everyone learns and the problem person gets help. I feel that a wrong way drivers who die, get out lucky. NO living rest of life with consequences.

So sad. This really hits home for me. I have lost close friends from that were involved in a DUI wreck. I have also been on the other side of it receiving a DUI only months after turning 21. Fortunately I wasn’t involved in a crash so no one was hurt. I thank God everyday that happened to me because I haven’t gotten behind the wheel under the influence since then and that was 20 years ago. There are so many questions. I know I need to do some research but why we have not implemented some sort breathalyzer ignition start switch mandate on vehicles whom have a DUI record? Put them on all vehicles? That’s not really practical. I know that this has been done in either others states or other countries around the world. Just like the mandatory video dash cams in Russia. If someone were to install a dash cam and/or DUI ignition switch on their own vehicle how about a discount through their insurance company? Any thoughts?

I wonder, if there are bodies just completely smashed into a crumpled vehicle, do they cut them out at the scene or load the vehicle on a wrecker and take it somewhere to have the bodies cut out? When I was in high school a classmate was killed in a horrible T-bone wreck. To say that he was fused into th e remains of his car is the understatement of the year. About four days later some buddies and I, from school, went to the wrecker yard to see the car. It was really hot outside that day. We couldn't get any closer than about 20 feet because it smelled so bad and millions of flies were all over the car. We heard rumors that they had to cut off both his legs at the knees because the remainder of his legs were just smashed into a chunky paste that couldn't be removed. His car and the car he t-boned hit so hard that both engines were torn out and came to rest in someone's front yard. Years later a buddy of mine was about the third car back at a stop light. Suddenly there was a loud BANG! He looked up just in time to see two legs attached to a torso flopped out into the intersection. A high school kid, with three of his friends in the backseat, was driving at least seventy MPH. He came upon the intersection with all the cars waiting at the light and simply had no time to brake. His car, now out of control, hit the sidewalk, missing every car, causing the car to turn sideways and struck a tree just slightly behind the driver's seat. On impact the car was torn completely in half. The driver was smashed all up into the steering wheel and dashboard. Unbelievably the three in the back seat walked away unhurt. My buddy said that he ran to the car to see if he could help. He said the driver's face was pressed up hard against the far left corner of the windshield, that didn't break. He said the kids eyes were wide open but there was no doubt that he was dead. He said the kids face, pressed up to the windshield looked really creepy.

The average car is about 2 tons and MAY crash into an object 75 feet away with 50,000 pounds of pressure! No wonder the object is crumpled! When you see crumpled wads of metal on a road, you know someone has probably died in that car. The human body is a fairly fragile thing, easily cut, easily broken and easily crushed. And cars do not have as much steel as they used to and more composite materials that shatter on impact. Sure, seatbelts and air-bags help a lot but not enough where speed is involved. In the ER, we can replace lost blood, breathe for them, get their heart started again, give drugs to help reduce swelling in the brain in a head injury, take them to surgery to find internal bleeding and stop it IF we get the patient within that "golden hour" but sometimes it's just too late. Often we must save their life first and do surgery later for broken bones, skin grafts, plastic surgery, etc. to help them repair themselves. We win some and we lose some and when we lose, it ruins our day also! PLEASE DO NOT SPEED, DO NOT DRINK/DRUG AND DRIVE AND PAY ATTENTION to what is going on around you on the highway. A car can travel over 95 feet a SECOND at 65 mph, and if it hits something at the end of that, (which it usually does) there is GOING to be crumpled metal and a crushed vehicle and people who were in it likely won't survive, and some are crippled for life.

Yikes. I seen some lady merge onto the freeway the opposite way in downtown Sacramento before. I honked at her but she kept going.. when i finally turned left I seen her turning around on the freeway offramp. I am glad that she didnt continue.

I really don't understand how people driving can't tell a car is coming at them head on. I've been in that situation twice, one after 12 at night and one around sunset. I can clearly see a car heading towards way before it's near. I just serve to the side and waited.
