Best video I've seen on rear drum brakes a lot of them skip over the big adjuster spring which is the hardest part.

DANGER: In Gen 2 Prius (04-09) if you drive in Neutral above 42mph, you are overspeeding an electric motor/generator (MG). The car will let you do this, but if you blow an MG up, big $$$$$$. Max safe speed in Neutral varies by Prius generation. I believe all are safe at 39mph and below, so I strongly recommend being careful to not throw any Prius into Neutral above 35mph (or the exact limit for the given generation if you are sure of it) and don't let speed build up above that speed going downhill in Neutral either. When doing brakes on any Prius, you also want to completely avoid the car thinking you might be getting in the car or starting it. Just unlocking the door or opening the door or clicking the key fob remote can make it electronically press the brakes preparing to start up, which can be disaster if you have the brakes apart and it pushes against nothing. So, I release the parking brake, open the driver's window so I can turn the steering wheel if needed (only 2001-2003 locks the steering wheel), , turn the car off, and put the key fob far away from the car where nobody, including me, will touch it. I do this as an alternative to disconnecting the 12V battery, which is even a more sure way of it not firing up the brakes and needing a tow to a dealer.

my back passwnger locked up and i had to free them just to get car home. took me two hours and 100 dollars with wheel cylinder replacement also. bolt broke off on old one so i used a ten millimeter from car to mount it. it was gona be 800 but i did it myself. il do the other side later. had to get fluid also to get rid of abs code. be careful with rust nipples and brake line bolt. had to do it slowly

I just got the power stop kit, came with everything. I did notice after install the left and right star adjustment bars were in the wrong packets. I had to use the left side on the right and visa versa. One screws clockwise out the other is anti clockwise. Just make sure when installed when your spinning the adjuster it's adjusting wider as you spin the wheel towards the middle of the car (on the top)
@Mrelectric4238 ай бұрын
Im not sure which direction they turn relative to middle of car but the small self adjust lever should expand the shoes when it acts on the star wheel not contract.

Its worthy to note that the bottom, where the brakes meet, should be behind that double bolt sleeve. I think thats were I whent wrong putting it back together. Otherwise you will have a hell of a time putting the cover back on. Although not impossibly. I took pictures before I started, but forgot about the position on the bottom.

Hello and good afternoon Mr electric, I have some question maybe you could help me with. So I attempted this today and while I was trying to assemble everything back together I pushed in one of the brake shoes against the brake cylinder and due to the pressure one side popped out and leaked out some brake fluid revealing the spring inside the cylinder, I then grabbed it and snapped it into place. Is this normal or does this mean the brake cylinder I bought from autozone is defective or cheap ? Should I continue with the installation or do you recommend going to replace it ?

Mr. Electric...Thanks to your Prius bleeding video, I succesfully bled the Prius brakes. I have a question. (maybe could be a video idea as well)....how do you keep the Auxilary battery dropping voltage (below 12 volts) During long OBD2 or Techstream scans/prodecures? I noticed techstream often failed on me due to this...can I add an external power charger to the Prius from the front? Not sure and don't want to fry my electronics! Thank you (your tip on clearing the codes before bleeding really helped!!!)

Hi Mr. Electric. Thanks a lot for your video again. I have the same issue with my 2006 Prius. But the code is C1344, so the other side. Toyota dealer quotes me for changing the ABS Actuator for 2300€... So I was wondering if after you change the rear drum, does the code appears again? Really appreciate your answer. Regards from Europe.

Many cars have shorter brake shoes (primary shoes) that face the front of the vehicle.

What turns the star wheel? The adjuster that clips onto the right shoe on first wheel has a small spring. I thing that engages on the backside of the shoe. I am struggling to get that in position.
@Mrelectric4232 жыл бұрын
it gets turned by the self adjust mechanism.

Hi Mr. Electric. I would appreciate your input on this. I replace the rear left hub assemble on a 2006 prius. I had a problem installing the previous day, but finished up today. My break fluid emptied out over night. I did not drive the car. I finished the left side and tried to bleed with the car off, like you showed. But the accuator pump did not start. I filled the reservoir and it immediately whent down. Refilled and no more loss. I am going to change the right side tomorrow. The brake light is staying on. I know i did the job right. The right side has a bad speed sensor. Do you think the light will go off after I change out the right side? Im hopeing the accuator is ok. I tried a 12v disconnect to see if it would reset, It did not.
@Mrelectric4233 жыл бұрын
Is there still a leak? You will need to clear codes or it will not pump to that wheel. You will need a decent scan tool to access hybrid and abs code clear.

@@Mrelectric423 The bolt is M8x1.25, at least for a 1995 to 2010 Toyota Corolla and I'm guessing for the Prius as well. I've not gotten out and worked on yet since reading into, I'm going to try to press the lever and adjust back out the star wheel from the inside since appears can. Was reported the brakes were all new, so guessing the tab on the auto adjusting lever isn't making contact correctly. Otherwise, once I clear the same RR code, if that doesn't work I'll open up and see if something wasn't installed correctly or something was reported wrongly.

@@Eddi3xBac0n 12mm bolt to screw in to the drum to pull off? I wound up doing at the yard in a hurry before they were closing to get another strut part since wound up being lefty tighty so tight I messed up the smooth part of the shaft trying to righty loosy back open. Guessing vibrated that tight or something I suspected assembled wrong more than was apparent. The situation on mine wound up being the adjustment lever wasn't installed correctly in between the strut fork on the passenger side thus causing the ABS and VSC error codes and lower pressure on the RR hydraulic circuit. That's it. Plus the driver side wasn't adjusted tight enough to engage the emergency brake once all assembled on the passenger side correctly when up in the air. Everything else seemed OK with the rear brakes and I just greased up more when assembling back together with some of the newer parts in better condition. Salvage yards are a Godsend when the parts you can use are there. I've been slowly searching for and replacing parts with Toyota or OEM as I find cost effectively. Stoked I just has a 44.4MPG milestone day today, still needing the AF Ratio sensor installed to clear the engine light. Once I replace that, sounds and reads like I can expect a potential 5 to 10MPG improvement.

Could I drive my '05 around the block to a garage, swipe the code clear then come back home and continue the bleeding of the rear brake..driver side only?

Tried to get a firm pressure to return to the pedal with only losing the front brake pressure...frustrated! Well, consulting the mechanic...he suggested cross bleeding, example ..front right - back left bleed together only then after removing each tire 5 or 6 times did give up....Well surprise! @Mr.Electric 2007 Toyota Prius my rear wheel cylinder was leaking for weeks and I kept refilling it. My shoes wore down to metal over time and didn't replace it. So I bought all the parts including springs all new wheel cylinders and shoes for both rear drum wheels. The dash still had the break, abs and vis symbols or whatever those are still showing after the brake job. I tried to bleed the rear brakes but nothing would come out. I tried several times. Then late last night I reset the code so they're not showing on the dash anymore. Can the brakes be bled now? I'm hearing that once you open up the cylinders and air gets the line in a Prius they can't be bled by a standard person without the Prius high-tech laptop and software. What do you know about this? Thank you!

Hello Mr Electric. I'm doing a rear brake replacement and did the quick brake bleed process without a hitch on the left side. However when completing the right side I went to bleed the brakes and I am not getting any fluid to flow out the bleeder. I hear the actuator run momentarily like it is building pressure, but no fluid. Thinking a needed to go up the line so to speak, I removed the brake line from the wheel cylinder and no fluid is running,...actually there is a slow drip, so something is happening. I've read that maybe there is a solenoid that needs to be reset or something to get fluid to the RR. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@Mrelectric4232 жыл бұрын
It probably set a code. Once the code is cleared it will pump again.
