Would have been interesting to hear Waddle the pundit describe Waddle the player as his dribbled the ball off the pitch when in a glorious position.

Correctly, at the beginning of the report, the commentator said - 3 matches at the World Championships, the British cannot score a goal. This match was the fourth. However, England did not miss 4 matches before the meeting with Portugal. Shilton's record (501 minutes) was broken only by Walter Zenga in 1990.

A really scrappy game, especially after Ray Wilkins got sent off, the only good thing in the game is that both sides were excellent and accurate and very comfortable in possession, both teams had chances in the game, I thought in the first half one of the Moroccan players who fluffed his shot in the box I won't say he should of scored but he should definitely have connected with it and hit the target, that was the biggest chance of the game but apart from that both teams were very blunt in their finishing.

Yeah, certainly seems that way in hindsight! Was just glad they went through 'back in the day', but defending all over the shop @times and that 'Back Pass Rule' not prevelant helped. Wilkins sent off though eh! Very rare, but was 2 yellows tbf & Robbo's absence luckily didn't effect next match really.

I couldn't and still can't believe that Reidy and Hodge were preferred over Hoddle and Waddle for the Argentina game.
@13muller9
@13muller9 4 жыл бұрын
One could argue that Reid as a defensive midfielder was necessary to check on Argentinian attacking players like Maradona (which didn't work obviously!), but to leave Waddle and also Barnes is mind boggling. Just look at how the Barnes changed the balance of the game against Argentina as soon as he stepped in. Waddle could have had similar effect. Hoddle was playing (from the start), if I am not mistaken.

@numsig
@numsig 3 жыл бұрын
Hoddle did play. And Reidy and Trevor Steven earned their spots by their performances for Everton and obviously in the two 3-0 wins when England played much better. Reid was the obvious understudy to Robson too and probably wouldve been a better choice to start than Wilkins was by this season. Also, Waddle was the most creative player for England in the Portugal match and was then dropped for the rest of the games. Hateley was selected over Beardsley for the first two matches and was predictably shite. It is strange that Barnes did not get a look in until the last 12 mins vs Argentina though... but sadly typical of England management decisions ever since. This was a talented England squad and it is hard to make a case for Hodge getting any minutes at all when compared to the others in the squad, even with the loss of Bryan Robson.

@cohenhaywood10 whilst this is undoubtedly true that bringing in the Everton boys improved things for the next two games, Robson would have been particularly useful for the Argentina game to nulify Maradona... you can see that this was possible if you watch the League XI vs Rest of the World match in 1988 when Robson makes several recovering tackles on the little man during his dribbles....conditions were very different though but surely he'd have had more chance than Reidy at catching him!! A lot of people say with hindsight Barnes should have started, but we'd just won two matches easily finally! That said, how does Hodge get in the team when you have Waddle, Barnes in the squad?

England's chances are, and will always be, comical to this day when we never pick our most talented players and lag about 10 years on average behind the rest of the world tactically..... Le Tissier barely got a cap and even today we pick Henderson and Rice over Grealish far too often.

too bad the moroccans didn't eliminate those stuck up useless english squad who never win anything and if not out from the group stages by teams like costarica they wouldn't make it passed 2d round they spend lot and lot of money on their league in vein their national team sucks and gets humiliated by minnows , hope panama and tunisia would send them home next summer like in 2014 from the first round, as they shouldn't have no expectation of glory of any kind.maradonna sent them home crying that year with the hand of god skillful trick.

It's an interesting opinion, which you're absolutely within your rights to hold - one I don't share, naturally, but I'm not going to be rude to you. There are aspects of our league system that I dislike - the money pumped into the clubs has lessened competition among the elite team and turned our top division into three mini-leagues. I'm not a fan of the way our national team appears to have weakened as a result of a club's ability to bring in expensive and talented players from all over the world. I don't wish to appear xenophobic; I don't have the money to have travelled far but the people I've met in the countries I have been to have been by and large delightful. It's just a shame that clubs and managers prefer this method than the more time-consuming German way of training up from within. As for our national team - well, I often think that the ugly minority of our supporters, and our often horribly jingoistic press paint an inaccurate picture of our national side. The players aren't arrogant, presumptuous or stupid enough to believe that just because they're England teams will simply roll over and let them win. How can they? We've been caught out several times in the past. No; the players are just a bunch of lads who love their football and are lucky enough to get picked to play. Are they overpaid? In my opinion, probably, yes. Are they perfect? Definitely not, but I'd also suggest that they're not stuck up or useless either. I don't know where you're from, Jitonik - it's irrelevant in a lot of ways, but let's imagine for the sake of argument that you're from Slovakia. Now, when Slovakia play England, they drop deep, play two lines of four and frustrate their opponents. And it works; it drives me crazy that England can't break down teams that play in this way - we lack movement; we lack what Germany have, which is the ability to mix it up.; switch the play, change things with pace and power. That doesn't mean I would angrily criticise the Slovakian team, its league and so on. That's just me. And I'm not trying to suggest that in this way I'm somehow superior; just different. If we watched a game together, you and I, between England and your national team, I'd want to have a beer with you afterwards and talk as two football fans about the match - whether we won, lost or drew with you. I have to say, on that day back in 1986 we weren't great in this game. Morocco were terrific. Defended well, dealt with the heat far better than England... and we'd already lost to a weakened Portugal side by this stage too. I'm not sure if you know this but following this match some of the players went to our national manager at the time and asked him to change the system. He didn't want to, but he did - Hateley was dropped for the next match in favour of the more versatile Peter Beardsley and Peter Reid was brought into the midfield to help shore up any loose balls in front of the back four. Had that not happened then I suspect you'd have gotten your wish! Maradona's handball made me really upset, I think - I was fifteen at the time and should have been studying for my school exams but stayed up to watch the game. I wish he'd not resorted to that. I'd have rather we drew the game 1-1 and gone out on penalties (which we pretty much do every tournament); Argentina had a fantastic team that year and the best player in the world. Anyway, this might not change the way you think about the England team, but I hope you see that we're not all arrogant. We just want to see decent football. And if it's by your team, then good luck to you. Cheers.
