06 - FBX, WTF?? Intro to Processing External Geo

Hello all humans of the internet. Today we will get our feet wet with importing geometry that was created outside of Houdini. We take a deep dive into FBX importing to understand different ways of using the data provided. We also do a brief comparison with the OBJ format. Thanks for watching!

I remember that in art school I frenquently had corrupted .FBX files... And the only way to fix them (suggested by the teacher) was to open them in Blender and re-export them as .FBX from there.

Looking forward to the next video with more complex scenes! I remember starting out with Houdini a few months ago, spending a whole day figuring out exporting/importing files and how to structure everything in an efficient way. Learned a lot of things from this video! ✌

Just in time! I was trying to ROP FBX export today and houdini crashed every time. What could cause this? Even when I Cached File prior export. USD export of same GEO worked fine.

Hmmm sounds buggy. I'd have to know more about the file to diagnose. Throw it up on reddit r/Houdini if you're on there or feel free to DM me on insta. Or just go with USD! Also a solid option :)

and what about how to export a video to a grid in Houdini, in blender it is done by drag and drop, and it is not so stupid that you have to create a sequence in Houdini

@@regularmenthol if I need to make a monitor and run a video on it, in Houdini/redshift, I need to create a sequence of this video and attach it as a texture. and in blender you can take any video from the Internet and connect it as a texture. and unfortunately, I did not find how to connect mp4 or mov in Houdini/redshift 🫠

@@rolandsheroziya ah i see. Sounds like Blender might be a better fit for that purpose. I believe Redshift only accepts image sequences as textures so you’d need to pre-render it first and then hook it up

​@@rolandsheroziya in a professional setting you would render the screen as a UV utility pass, then put whatever you want on the screen in post.
