Key won't fully turn to unlock gas cap

Sorry, man, but you only needed to push down while turning the key. This allows the striker to retract and the key to turn. If you don’t push down the striker will remain jammed against the filler neck. This prevents you from turning the key without way too much force. I just got mine open again after 8 years of neglect where I found the tank and fuel door completely rusted. The inside of my 250’s fuel door was covered in fuzzy crystals and totally rusted. The key felt jammed but I still managed to get it open without damage since I already knew how it should be done. I rode my 250R every day for four years before it sat so I knew exactly where to squirt the WD-40. ;) The striker is not supposed to freely move with a key in it. It is spring-loaded and only retracts while the key is turned. This also forces the key back to the start position when you let go.

Worked for me (07'). I just had to bruteforce the cap out after taking all the screws out by tilting it to the front and pulling up hard.

I dropped a few drops of gun lube inside the lock and it fixed the problem instantly. Haven’t had a problem since.

I have a ninja 500 2006 too and I have the same issue but my key I can’t turn a lot because it’s about to snap. But I can turn on my ignition just fine.

Bloody Flaxko I would definitely get another key made before it breaks. It cost me $100 to have lock smith make me new one

H Zhao I disassembled the lock and lubricated it. Didn't have to replace.

I've been able to clear the erosion by spraying WD-40 into the 0.5mm hole on the bottom of the cap lock block and turning the key repeatedly.

& then what? how can you ride without locking the gastank? mine just locked I need help

I lubricated the lock cylinder and it freed up the lock so it worked again or you can replace it. I wouldn't suggest riding without it locking...
