WEST PENNINE MOORS WALK FEATURING RAMSBOTTOM, HOLCOMBE MOOR AND PEEL TOWER
“Hilltop of Holcombe”
Filmed 14th July 2016
Post-production completed 12th August 2016
I travel to the pretty town of Ramsbottom at the edge of the West Pennine Moors, a location new to me, but my visit here is to do a walk in the area recommended to me. This exciting adventure for me brings me to a walk high above the town, specifically across Holcombe Moor to eventually visit a fantastic huge monument, which can be seen dominating the hilltop for many miles around…..
Filmed in the West Pennine Moors in the counties of Greater Manchester and Lancashire. Locations include Ramsbottom, Holcombe Moor, Pilgrims’ Cross, Harcles Hill and Peel Tower. This is the first film in the West Pennine Moors.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.
Click here for a map showing the route of the walk: osmaps.ordnanc...
"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler
There is also a short “Introduction to the Solitary Rambler” video, which briefly explains what my films are all about: / solitaryrambler

I grew up in Holcombe Brook. Holcombe Hill and Peel Tower are symbols of home to me. When I was a kid and my parents would drive somewhere - and we were on our way back - the tower would always come into view at some point, and I knew we were nearly home.

I am doing research/geneaology on my namesake "Holcombe." Thank you for sharing this walk video, it just adds some more intrigue to my research and hopefully a visit to see it in person.

I did this walk the other way round but whichever way you go the scenery is stunning. Another meaning I have heard of for Ramsbottom is that it comes from Middle English hramsa meaning "wild garlic" so a valley where wild garlic grows. I've still a few of the walks to watch in areas that I know then I will watch new areas. Keep up the good work.

This is my favourite film I've done. As you say the scenery is stunning, the views are amazing from Holcombe Moor. Ramsbottom is a great town too, I've actually been back to revisit a few times since making this. Thanks again Maeve for watching. Cheers, Patrick :)

I've just discovered your channel, Patrick. Thank you for the excellent videos combining quality photography and a fine commentary. The music fits in so well. I am exiled in South Korea so it is marvellous to see such great videos. I'm pleased to see that the East Lancs railway got a mention and I recommend another time that you hop off the railway and do a walk and also take in a pint or two in one of the many excellent hostelries. Anyway, your walks are giving me a lot of inspiration.

If that was St Paul's then my Dad was born in the street behind it in 1930. Great hike, loved the Peel Tower and that Chinook below. Makes you wonder about that Cross that stood there all those years ago. I bet it could have told some stories. Thanks for sharing Patrick.

I've just checked online as wasn't sure which church you were referring to, but the one on Bridge Street Ramsbottom is St Pauls. Some great history up on those moors with the tower and the site of the old cross. Thanks again Chris for taking the time to watch 👍

I'm just rewatching some of your older walks. I visited a friend in ramsbottom and i remember seeing the tower on the hillside. I thought, one day i will walk up there and check it out but I've since moved to Lincolnshire so never been back. You had the place to yourself that day. Cheers Patrick😁

Thanks for rewatching Kelly. I can't believe it's nearly six years since filming this. There were a few people about from what I can recall, but it wasn't busy like other walks I've shot. Ramsbottom is a nice town, been back a few times (minus the camera) for a visit. All the best 👍

Now this film is my absolute personal favourite, and my KZbin channel cover photo is the clue. Everything with this film just fell into place for me, and I felt I raised my game here as John, the guy who recommended this walk to me, had said "I'm sure you'd make a great film", so that stayed in my mind and I was determined to live up to his words. In the end I felt I had completed my best work here. Thanks for watching Pete. Cheers, Patrick :)
