I had this cold stall problem with my 2008 fit. I tried switching my spark plugs, egr valve, cleaning the throttle body, and nothing worked. I searched Honda fit cold start stall on KZbin and found several of these videos saying it’s a valve adjustment issue. I took my car to the dealership and asked them to do a valve adjustment. They insisted I had a bigger problem, they think it’s my torque converter blah blah blah it’s gonna cost me $2400. But I insisted they just do the valve adjustment and now my car is running perfectly. Purrs like a kitten. The car doesn’t shake anymore, doesn’t stall, and doesn’t smell like gas anymore. Thank you for making these vids. You saved me a lot of money.

How much did they charge you the valve adjustment?
@mistacarta1906

@@jarana10 $340 Canadian. But I didn’t have the spark plugs changed, which they usually do with a valve adjustment, cause they were new. So it would be $500 ish normally.

Thanks for the video koolkevin1107! I watched this video a couple times, made some notes beforehand and followed the procedure. It seemed daunting until I actually started. Very simple and straight forward. I took my time adjusting and did as you said and cycled a couple rotations after adjustment to recheck. My car has 120,000 on it and I don't think the valves had ever been adjusted. I had many (mostly on the exhaust side) that were out of spec. Now the car has MUCH better bottom end. If anyone is apprehensive about this don't worry if you're even you are only mildly competent with hand tools. Take your time, make some notes (if you like) and just do it. Save a TON by doing it yourself. I bought the angled feeler guage and some red Permatex RTV so my total cost was only about $20 as opposed to the $400 that the stealership charges.

My car was sputtering, most noticeable listening to the exhaust...also, the engine was shaking slightly. The biggest thing was that it stalled when it was cold at the first stop sign about a block from my home. Hope this helps.

Sorry, there is more...I replaced each of my coils with a good one that I purchased, ran some sea foam through the gas tank, cleaned the throttle body really good, cleaned the EGR valve, and the intake rail. By doing all of these, the only thing left was to do the valves. I enjoy working on stuff like this, the valve adjustment made me a bit nervous, but it was fun working through the process. Starting it up for the first time and hearing it run smooth was great!

I did the job and the car's got much more power and the engine sounds really sweet. So thanks Koolkevin1107 - I wouldn't have attempted it without this excellent vid. Did have a few "moments" though. I cleaned the throttle body in-situ because mine had way more connectors and pipes than yours and I didn't want to disturb it. After I did the valve job and started the engine, the engine warning light came on. After a couple of pushes of the accelerator, everything returned to normal. Other than that it was easy but the two bolts at the back of the intake manifold are a right b***ard to get to Thnaks!

JUST SNAPPED MY VALVE COVER BOLT! MANUAL SAYS 8LBS but i still snapped it! had to drill and extract it out! other than that everything went great didnt need to remove the spark plugs i could turn the motor just fine, didnt even take off the wheel i put a long extension with a swivel. my intakes were wayy loose and the exhaust were all too tight. i dont notice any drivability difference but they actually sound louder than before i adjusted them. i triple checked everything so i guess its just a loud valvetrain to begin with thanks for the video walk through. if you are reading this dont tighten the valve cover bolts too much they have a stop built in on the bolts itself!

Good instructional showing procedure. Only point I would make is to not use high temp RTV... people are liberal with it and it can cause serious engine damage if it falls into oil supply or return orifice. Just my 2 cents... I have taken apart a few broken engines that where directly related to RTV use. Buy the Honda Bond for the extra effort its worth it.

Great video, thanks! I 've not read the adjustment procedure from Honda but did you just put #1 cyl at TDC compression ,and the leaves all the cyls in condition where all the valves are closed? So if #1 is at TDC compression #2 might be at bottom of power stroke and valves would be closed .And #3 cyl might be at the bottom of compression stroke ,so all the valves are still closed .

What is it you expect can happen if you turn the engine the other way? Is it something special for the Jazz? I just ask because we have been turning back and forth for more than a lifetime during valve adjusting and nothing bad has happen yet. Is what you mean the engine has to be turning forward as the last move before measuring? I practice that myself, but many don`t and there are not really any reason for it. All cars will many times during lifespan rotate the engine backwards. At least all manual trans. The first decades of Civic had engine turning opposite way from the jazz you show here if you are turning its engine forward. Timing belt so easy to change you could do it roadside. No valve piston collision if it broke. What an engine! Can also be said about your Jazz there because i spot a very durable timing chain compare to the single chain in my 2 liter BMW diesel N47. Not easy to axess either. Thank you for a good movie!

Great Information and well talked through. However, you didn't mention or show any adjustment other than cylinder one. That being the case ; Is the 'engine crank pulley' rotated to show each 'marked cylinder number i.e. 3 next' on the overhead camshaft sprocket lined up at the small indent mark (similar to the 'UP' mark cylinder one example) to set TDC (top dead center) for each cylinder?? I take it that, that is the case. Great video-keep them coming if you can. Firing order is by the way ('UP' being 1, 3 ,4, 2 )

great video. you mentioned your valve cover had a small leak and you were going to tighten the bolts more next time. be careful with the valve cover bolts as they shear off super super easily if you go above the recommended torque spec (7.2 ft/lbs). Not sure the OP will respond. Valve clearances are in inches. He was using 0.006, or 6 thousandths of an inch, on the intake side. 0.010 or 10 thousandths of an inch, on the exhaust side. I have only ever seen valve clearances referenced in thousandths of inches for German, Japanese, or US automobiles. Although clearances may also get listed in micrometers. mm is aprox. 0.040 inches fyi.

If I start from cold, my Fit is very jerky and shudders. If I stop at the lights, it sounds like it could die (but it never actually has). If the car is cold and I need to stop at a set of lights, I put it in neutral, which avoids the cutting out problem. Once it's warmed up, 9/10 times there are no issues moving through the gears, and no problems at highway speed ever. Does this sound like a valve problem?

Today I replace four ignition coils... however, one screw for tightening ignition coil is broken and 80% stuck in the hole. Damn it! That ignition coil is working, and I hope it will not be "pop out". Should I remove the cylinder cover the take the broken screw out?

I had the same thing happen, the bolt was seized, an extractor wouldn't work either so I drilled it out and used a bolt and nut that fit the spark coil. my first coil bolt was tight all the way out, the second snapped before breaking loose and was a pain to drill out so I didn't touch the 3rd and 4th, gonna have the dealership replace all the plugs, might have them do the valve adjustments as well?

Nope, has nothing to do with idle. Just do the adjustment with the battery disconnected

My wife's 2008 fit had this issue exhaust valves were so tight couldnt get feeler gauge in so that was def the issue. Now it has the dreaded cold start rattle first start of day. Other models of fit it is the vtc actuator the 2008 just has cam timing sprocket which I believe is the issue has anyone replaced theirs?

Joshua... Did you figure that rattling noise on a cold start? My sons fit, manual transmission is doing the same thing. It runs really good also. Sounds like there is also a light knock you can barely hear when the car is idling at a stop light. Very faint knock, but a knock for sure. It has 120k at the moment. Mainly concerned about that rattle noise on a cold start. It's also a 2008

I started this job today and my motor is no where near as clean as this one. I just bought the car with 173k miles and looks like he never changed the oil. At 3,000 rpm steady there is a rattle that is hard to explain but I am hoping this is my issue. We used a stethoscope and the noise was coming from the top of the motor. I have took the belt off cranked the car and still had the same noise.
