07/26/2012 - Severe Thunderstorm Warning/Tornado Watch - New York City, NY. (Raw Footage)

(Raw, uncut footage) Shelf cloud moving into Flushing, NY.
A line of well-organized, multi-clustered severe thunderstorms (derecho) extending from upper New England all the way to Texas prompted the NWS throughout this vicinity to issue multiple severe thunderstorm warnings, and a few tornado warnings as well. Most of the Tornadoes Warnings are issued in areas of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York, with damage due to an unconfirmed tornado in Elmira, New York.
Damage from my observation point seemed minimal, although NYPD police scanner from the 103 - 107 PCT frequency did report a live wire in my vicinity, possibly as the result of a strong gust of wind.

Here in the UK we get severe weather from time to time but it would be great if we had audio weather warnings like this.

As per se, NWS did detect weak rotations within the line of bow echoes. Not really enough to produce storms, but did put off some gusty winds, derecho/shelf clouds, and heavy precipitation.

The storm did hit harder in your area than in ours, as the gust front had dramatic weakened once it got to greater NY, but still bear the slight potential for weak isolated tornadoes to form (from NSSL and NWS) hence the Tornado Watch was in effect.

Can't believe it's been 5 years (as of 2017) since this severe thunderstorm event happened. I still remember it clearly. The skies that evening were looking very ominous since there was a line of severe storms and there was lightning everywhere I looked. And before I knew it, a downpour with gusty winds was already in my area with very close lightning strikes.

I grew up in Manhattan, then moved to Nyack, NY, right across the Hudson from Westchester County. Tornadoes are rare in the NYC area, which is why they really freaked me out the few times I remember it happening.

They are rare but during the severe thunderstorm seasons of the summer, some small tornadoes can still occur. In 2019 there was a tornado that hit Staten Island.

I lived in Horseheads new york next to Elmira New York. For those who don't know, Elimira was hit by an EF2 Tornado by this same storm.

You should've noticed the downpour today. Rooftop rain gauge measured at around 2" in a matter of 45 minutes and also caused some flooding on Jewel Ave., Van Wyck Expressway and the LIE around where I am. I'm getting my video up soon.

Not that I know of...but Westchester County, the county just north of The Bronx, tests their Federal Signal civil defense sirens every now and then and it's the same technology that is used for tornado warnings in the mid-west.

tamreb35 Nobody does. It's scary of course. The one thing you don't do in a severe thunderstorm is panic. Follow the rules of tornado safety. Grab food and water, and get to the lowest area in the immediate surroundings. Then, you'll be safe. I know I'm a month late, but, just advising you to stay safe.
