A man that never stopped being a student. Neil was so articulate in his lyrics as he is here in this interview. The reason...He loved to read and learn. When you stop doing that it's game over. The ironic part is that a man that could play a 3 hour concert with the intensity of a freight train and hardly sweat, only to die from Glioblastoma, Brain cancer perplexes and saddens me. The world is a lesser place now without the Professor to show us compassion, understanding and insight to the human condition. RIP Neil, you were one of a kind!

I still cry when I play "The Garden". To me, no other song sums up the bands 40 plus years of incredible work, dedication and emotions. I met Rush in 2002, albeit with the absent Neil (dang), however it's still one of the THE BEST days in my life. I could blab forever but wait.. I need to play The Garden now. Miss you Neil!!!

@@matthewmp111 ,Thank you, Typing on a phone is very trying to say the least. I, of course, meant his first family. I know he remarried, but that past has the propensity to rent space [ for free] in your mind. The fact that he was able to make a comeback shows us all never throw in the towel. I saw the start of the Vapor Trails tour. Hartford Ct. June 2002. An amazing & powerful show. The energy, talent& hijinks between the 3 was prevalent. I don't put much stock in entertainers, but RUSH as a whole were magnanimous, never smug. That's why, in my opinion one of the more appealing traits that covered such a broad encompassing audience. Again thanks for the comment. I reiterate, he will be sorely missed.

Over the past year or so, I've listened to 4 or 5 Neil Peart interviews. Each of them is different, but all of them are the same in that they present Neil as a human being who is affectionate yet reserved, an intelligent and well-cultured man who still admits he has much to learn. I am grateful for the opportunity that these in-depth interviews provide in getting past the rock star and digging into his personal life in a sense. Neil inspired me in so many ways, and will continue to inspire me even in death. My thoughts and prayers are with Alex, Geddy, and Neil's wife and daughter. Be at peace...

This was such a great interview. as was the second one. I find it interesting how Neil would open up and talk so freely in these types of interviews where the interviewer really gets Neil and Rush and asks questions that Neil is so happy to answer. I know how Neil hated the total fan boy kind of stuff, and I personally never felt comfortable with the "Neil is the BEST drummer ever" comments, but by the same token, Neil has an undeniable body of work that was in so many ways ground breaking and innovative and just great drumming compositions. To add to that his skill of lyric writing and the fact that he had a loving and respectful relationship with two other outstanding musicians in Rush over a forty year period is unique and special. Such a great loss, but he lives on in his music, lyrics, writings and interviews like these.

No, if Rutsey would have stayed, the band would NOT have taken off the way they did. It was Neil's lyrics, themes, and, let's be honest, drumming that inspired Geddy and Alex to "go there."
@darwinblinks4 жыл бұрын
exactly. They became "Rush" for real when Neil joined.
@Daniel_Rodrigues_894 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. And even worse: if I'm not mistaken, according to "Beyond The Lighted Stage" Rutsey's "ill health" was something really serious (diabetes, I think) which was a big factor in leaving him out. IF Rutsey had the same determination as Peart to become the best drummer he could, with the band still making success without Peart contribution like you said, they would probably be done in the 70s with 3 or 4 albums and just another drummer "gone too soon". And not basically the greatest rock band that ever existed, in my opinion.

That or he just being incredibly polite, which is also possible. I bought Hold Your Fire when it came out, but this was the album where I became a full fledged Rush nut and saw them at the Spectrum in Philly for the first time and I would end up them seeing them another 10x and never missing a tour. I couldn’t think of a better band to grow old with through life like what was discussed here in the interview. I’m going to miss Neil and them being a part of it for the rest of it.

Thanks for putting this up; really don’t want to diss the interviewer as he’s trying his best, but one of his crutches is the list of questions that he wants to get in, stopping the amazing flow of insights that Neil generously offers; usually when an interviewee is that eloquent it is wiser to respond in the moment, which makes it a more rewarding experience for everyone.
