This interview was recorded just over a week after they played with Alice Cooper in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I was in high school. I was at the mall two days before the show with a friend and my little brother and of all the crazy things, Axl and Izzy walked right by us. As Axl explains in this interview, at this stage not many people knew who they were, but I sure as hell did. So we turned around and caught up to them and ended up walking around the mall with them, just talking and hanging out. Turns out they had walked to the mall from their hotel, so I offered them a ride back, which they graciously accepted. Izzy had bought a Ramones cassette which he popped into my stereo, and Axl cranked it and I had Axl and Izzy screaming along to Rock and Roll Radio IN MY FUCKING CAR. 😮 We got back to the hotel and Axl invited us up to his room to hang out and he brought in Duff and Steven (Slash was with some girl in the room next door). We hung out for over an hour until I had to leave to pick up my sister. Axl kinda lost it for a while after they became the biggest band in the world, and you hear a lot of negative stories, but THIS is the Axl I remember. The super cool guy in this interview, the one that bumped into a fan in the middle of nowhere, Missouri, and gave that fan a memory to brag about to this day. Thanks, Axl. That was pretty damn awesome of you.

Iron Maiden's Bass Player took the time out of his busy touring schedule to interview Axl Rose . Probably as an effort to promote Iron Maiden's relevance to the pretty boy butt Rock Glam bands like Guns n Roses. Considering all these androgynous men like Axl Rose , and Brett Michaels were the hip new movement, it was nice for a guy from a Real Metal band to Lower his standards and interview a pretty boy teen idol poseur like Axl

Usually this is the attitude towards guns n roses from iron maiden fans as is the spat between both the bands. There was nobody more genuine from 1987 on than guns n roses. And thank God they've gotten so big as word of mouth is still bringing more and more youngsters into the rock community as rock is a dying breed. So were thankful for guns n roses and laugh at bands like iron maiden that make songs about swords and knights and things that have nothing to do with living life and that nobody can even relate too while Bruce dickenson wears spandex all through the 80s and guns n roses didnt.

Now people still worship the ground that GNR walk upon on the strength of 2 albums that were recorded 35 years ago. The Double album, EP , and debut all contained maybe 1 albums worth of non filler material. Axl wouldn't show up to half the shows, and when he did show up he would sing off time , off key, forget words, tell the crowd to shut the fuck up , and then act like a spoiled kid and walk out in the middle of a song

Axl Rose is one misunderstood dude. Yes, he's mellowed out a lot in his later years and yes I believe people's accounts that he was often hard to work with. But this is someone who truly cared (and still cares) about his craft and wasn't doing it just for the money but doing it to change the world. And listen to him here... This is an insightful and intelligent guy. In the early 90s, he got incredibly famous, and people treated him like a god. He wouldn't be able to ever just go to the beach, or the shops. He was a prisoner in his own success. Different people handle that situation differently. I sure know I would have struggled with it. I'm glad he came out the other side in one piece. Not all of his new music is my cup of tea. But damn I'm glad he's still here making it!

I love this because back then Appetite wasn't super famous , even Axl said it was between 50 and 60 on the charts , little did he know MTV would pass it, everybody would go crazy and eventually it would become the best selling debut album of all time, which still is to date. It was simply a masterpiece and even though Adler and Izzy are no longer in the picture , I'm grateful they're still touring and hopefully I'll see them this year🙏

Yes! I was 7 years old, he was 25, and that's what I wanted to grow up to be. I didn't, but he's a big part of me. His influence on me can't be overstated. I'll always be thankful. I was in elementary school and I had no idea they were one of the biggest bands in the world. I was isolated. They were just mine. I'll always cherish that because I'll never have that again!

@@sevgiycl_ it's interesting to think about the concept of looking up to GnR. People certainly do today. But when I was a kid, most of the news about them was extremely critical. Axl was a magnet for controversy and there were so many complaints at the time for how bad of a role model he was. If Mom and Dad America were mad at anyone in the late 80s/early 90s, it was Axl Rose! Perhaps the Death knell of their heyday was the public feud they had with Nirvana. I'm glad they're a band you can get into. I often wonder if these older bands are at all appealing to teens today.

I believe he premeditated all the way to 93 the day week after izzy left and then all the way to 2016 by the six month mark of izzys departure. Maybe he didn't expect the gap to last quite that long, but I could believe that axl saw the response of the rolling stones comeback tour. The money involved with something like that Accompanied by the fact that without izzy nothing worth a fuck was getting writ the band would have dried up. all of them would be has been slash would likely be deceased. Axl called all the shots at the right time.

Appetite was such an awesome album! I was about 11/12 when it came out an I thought I was the coolest thing because I got it before my older brother did! 😂 I’ll never forget the first time I heard Welcome To The Jungle which was also the first time I saw the video. I remember just sitting there staring at the television and realizing this was something different! I think Guns N’ Roses for me was similar to what Nirvana was for so many others. Axl has been misunderstood for decades. He’s so much more intelligent than people have ever given him credit for. Obviously his temper has gotten the best of him at times, but hey people are complicated.

As a die die hard singer(muscician/fan -historian) of Axl since I was 14 in 1991 until now I can’t believe I finally found this monumental great EARLY interview by accident. I just subscribed. You rock dude. I wish I had you’re job. Im in film school yeah at this age but everyone says I look about 28 anyway so lol I plan to make a film about Guns N’ Roses and this is a very one of many very reliable sources because there is so much funny books out there I literally have a bookshelf full of hardcover mostly signed Autobio rock biographies including/, DUFF, and Steve and now there’s book there’s never been a well documented fuck about axle I took from the reliable sources such as Rolling Stone which I still have in plastic and make addition the one axle was on a 1992 having this tape would well is so awesome I’m glad you have it and you had that job at the time I’m sure you could die happy man I know I would the dirt movie about Mötley Crüe I was like Courtney loves said I’m not a big fan of was silly just too silly and humor was stupid and I thought it didn’t capture that time unlike that time unlike what Tommy Lee and Nikki said and as much as I respect them they are two bozos compared to the intelligence of W Ask For rachel she was so ahead of his time discovering bands like Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, faith no more or at least bringing them to the main stream and Making people that were into guns say all right I guess Skid Row is cool lol. You know what I mean. Thanks for posting this tape it made my fucking day. I must add their story makes for just as much or even a more interesting one then Mötley Crüe I mean all these guys came from different places as we both know and ever changing lineups and all that acts will be in the most mysterious one even though he is a singer I have enough info to know like useless facts how his mom had him when he was 16 and he didn’t grow up well he did grow up Bill Bailey but was born W asked Rose by finding his birth certificate when he was 17 changing his name to William Rose and then finally W Axl Rose etc. stuff like that. Shit I could go on and on. I could die happy man just singing songs from 16 to 35 and cover bands like it’s so easy which is always are opening song almost all the time and Mr. brownstone and so fine and patience and they train me being a baritone was much easier for me to sing it wasn’t till the robber came out that my not so educated not singing bandmates realized oh that’s why you picked brownstone and it’s so easy you’re a baritone. I see so much of myself and this guy I grew up with dudes who picked up instruments guitars drums bases etc. because I was a singer and so motivated not a bad at such a early age I have the cheapest guy new invest in a pearl drum set that sound driven I was too bad drugs hit me early but it’s never too late all right I said enough by myself who gives a shit.I’m just so amped about this interview I’m not even done with it yet. I saw GnR open for Iron Maiden on the seventh son tour, Rough rider stadum, Ottawa Canada, back in 1988. GnR were supporting their first album Appetite for Destruction. They weren't even known that well at that time. I knew them. I had already bought their album, but you could tell that Maiden fans werent appreciating them at all. Like Tom Petty said a year later with appetite broke I must mention by the way shit this is a poor sweet child the most viewed video in KZbin history damn but Tom Petty said Axel was the most driven person he ever met probably circa 2002 I could definitely see that. He didn’t hold anything back how we felt about bands and all that shit he is like laws are at says rock ‘n’ roll personified . I got it Ed 25 years old guy from Indiana talking about sushi I’m 1/4 Japanese and Grew up and still live in New York and everyone thought I was a freak because I bought sushi to lunch sometimes to talk to sushi in my school when I was 14 in 1987 bringing it to lunch when I’m trying to say if this guy was so fucking ahead of his time it’s unreal. Great great questions I always felt well John Cougar is was a guilty pleasure of mine back when I used to hide my guilty pleasures “strictly when it came to music taste ”but then both being from Indiana I mean my first tapes were the illusion tapes and then I went backwards and John cougar American fool. Even at 14 I was so interested in things that people weren’t interested in. Very meticulous like you an interview would be you know like John cougar and ask for both being from Indiana no I thought that was ironic no one cares no one none of my friends like John cougar but I always wonder what Ask For thought of John cougar for many many years that’s how much of a hassle free Guy am. Thanks so much for putting this up I’m gonna say again thank you. For being a lead singer Asa rose with my biggest inspiration since I started a band at 14 in 1992.

I don't know if "advice" is the correct term, but he definitely sounds like a hypocrite railing against pretentiousness in this early interview. The UYI album/tour and how he carried himself in general going forward became the embodiment of pretentiousness.
