I used to think politeness and non reaction is the best answer to someone who gets rude to you, but my recent experience with my colleague who kept insulting me more, just because I did not choose to react, stay calm and polite was just driving me crazy. I finally reacted and I am amazed at his polite behavior now ! Some people don’t understand the word “calm” and “polite” and it’s better you give them a piece of your mind so that they know you are hurt and don’t keep “exploiting” your calmness.

@@shawnafuqua4057 I've found a lot of videos on KZbin etc on how to respond, instead of reacting, to narcissistic individual's baiting and Tamie M Joyce has very helpful ones. I'm still having a LOT of trouble with changing my own habit though, as I find it hard to think clearly at the time. I also seem to have a phobia about hurting people's feelings, even though they have no trouble hurting mine! I'll keep practicing until I get it right, most of the time anyway. ❤

@@luciddreams5200 Unfortunately, those types of people will still do it, no matter how the partner, or whoever, responds. In fact, it can escalate if the partners retaliate, which happened to me in the past. On the other hand, the perpetrator might decide to end the "relationship" if their former punching bag starts punching back! Of course, I don't mean literally though and it depends on how far along the person is on the narcissism spectrum. 😥

This is good advice for most situations, but I had a friend who was a narcissist. It took me decades to figure that out. They would publicly denigrate me but in the form of humor. I smiled and went along with it an those years. Then when I looked back at our friendship, I realized they had never said anything kind to me, only a thousand put-downs. So I walked away from an abusive situation and am far happier for it. We have to have contact, because we have many friends in common, but I keep my distance and my exposure brief. I don't think they're would have been anything I could have said that would have changed their behavior since it was based in a disorder.

I have never regretted any response I gave back to my selfish rude brother. The methods you shared have been practiced already and it's only effective on some people. I will help my brother burn the bridge between us because he wants it burned anyway. Selfish rude people do not need to be connected with me. I have better and more important bridges to build with people who are at least appreciative. I will not waste my time on rude people. They don't need me nor do I need them. There are plenty of people to meet in this world.

Unfortunately, there are some people whom you cannot reach by simple words, and one of them was my brother-in-law. The rudest, angriest, most arrogant person I have ever met, always itching for a verbal fight over anything and everything. Reasoning with him was futile; it only spurred him to more rudeness and rage. So, the best thing to do was to completely ignore him. I do mean completely. The next time he barged into our house looking for a screaming match, none of us acknowledged his presence in the slightest. We did not look at him, speak to him, or indicate that we were aware of him at all, but calmly went on with what we were doing. He raved and screeched and marched up and down the room, then paused, obviously expecting a reaction. We gave him none. He cranked up the volume and continued his impersonation of an enraged gorilla. Still we said nothing. The fool did this for a good 10 minutes before it dawned on him that no matter what he said or how loudly he screamed, it was not going to give him what he wanted. He stormed off, banging the door behind him, and never tried that crap again.

I thought that at first. In other languages there are endings that you add onto words that indicate politeness and respect. So, if they weren't speaking English, it may be apparent that rude wording was used, BUT... it would translate in English the exact same way. For example, if your Mother asks you a question, you may be answering "Yes" But there is an ending that you add to the "Yes" that acknowledges respect. Without that ending it can seem rude -- but in English it still translates as "Yes".

Rude people don't understand that if you are being nice to them , its because you are not like them. There's an acquintance , she was rude and always in a troubled state of mind(she got all these mood swings) , I tried being nice to her but she thought that I had given in to her dominance , I still kept calm and was good to her for another 1 month . Finally I lost it and told her that her fucking opinions about me don't matter and that she should stop talking trash about me, I stood up for myself , I had to. She never pestered me again

Rashmi K I know what you mean. When I was only twenty two I just qualified as a nurse and in my first job there was an older woman who constantly berated and belittled me in front of everyone. One night we got a little kid in for an emergency op and I had to calculate an awkward drug dosage for the kid and my tormentor was the one who came to check it was correct. However she could not do the calculation and just agreed I told her NO you must be sure or go get your superior to check for you as you seem to be of the opinion I'm some kind of dummy and you will be held to account. Red faced she went for her senior who confirmed that I was correct whilst my bully. Still didn't have a clue. Guess who was my best buddy afterwards.

I completely agree with you. This is the common problem actually. When you try to be nice to rude people always, they think that you have let yourself dominate them. So once in a while you have to stand up strongly to hold your self esteem safe and clear their misconception.
@kahla3363

Faiza Daniya I don't understand where people got the idea that being polite or respectful is submissive. You can assert yourself & demand respect without being disrespectful or rude. In my job I have to deal with people from the the bottom of command to the absolute top executives of an extremely busy private hospital on a daily basis. Your interactions should not change depending on who you're talking to. The janitor gets the same respect from me that I give my boss. Demanding respect also doesn't equate attitude & rudeness. I had a lady come in my department & started setting equipment up in an area that was reserved for another purpose without asking me. I explained that I needed the space & immediately was met with attitude & her explaining that I can be without the space for awhile and she'd let me know when she was done , still setting up her stuff while she's talking, I guess thinking she would just bully me & since I wasn't arguing with her she thought she could. She finally stops talking & I say"I'm very sorry ma'am, but as I have already explained, you cannot use this space & I'll need you to remove your equipment immediately" she then gets very angry & says she already set everything up and she will not have time to take it all down & put it back up somewhere else. And even though she's just about yelling at this point, I smile and say"ma'am I explained this to you before you set your things up & you chose to do it anyway, so I am not responsible for your lost time, I will however get you some assistance with your equipment while I try to find you another space you may use." So I did what I said & she was able to get her job done with only minimal time delay. Before she left she came to my office to apologize for being rude & she appreciated my assistance. Now we deal together well. She realized that I wasn't a pushover and it is easier to ask than bully.

I practiced this for ages😊 the Bible teaches " forgive everyone " and" pray for your enemies "and" if someone wants to take your jacket, give them your trousers as well " kindness shoks rude people and with time reshape them.i have a few best friends who used to be my enemies. But we need to be determined, because it is a hard task to stay kind and loving when others are so mean. I get my strength from Jesus, and the Bible.there are some times when people are not willing to listen, they are determined to hurt you. In this case you have to run away from them like Jesus did, but you can pay for them, and with time God will work out a heart change in them. It's nice to meet up someone ex rude person who became very nice.

Adding water to fire does not always put out a fire but adding fire to fire definitely never does. Your "eye for an eye" approach might temporarily squash it but just because that person shut up doesn't mean their mind is changed. It is likely they will just do/say stuff behind your back, or if they are a stranger they might save the behavior for the next person.

Hippy(Bboomer) Exactly... Sometimes people are rude because they expect rudeness from the world. So when they receive politeness & good manners, it highlights their own rudeness & makes them rethink their interactions. And, u never know how much saying thank you, or excuse me, or smiling at someone you pass, holding the door for a stranger can change how they see the world. There's been stories of people not committing suicide because one person cared enough to say hello & ask how their day was. You don't always see the effects of your kindness & for most it won't matter, but it could mean the world to someone that's never been shown any.

I grew up with family phrases of "I love you, I don't like how you are behaving/ what you are doing/what you are saying ". So glad I have subscribed because both videos I have watched have been informative. Thank you.

I also learned from a co worker years ago when I was having a moan. She asked was I happy with my life & if I could change it would I. Foolishly I said yes, ah, then your children wouldn't have been born etc etc. With all the pain she had in her life she was grateful because without that she would not have had the wonderful bits. Made me think "would I really want my siblings lives". Money, position, travel all good, however one has had a child suicide & first marriage fail, other had one marriage & many relationships fail, both children had strokes when in early 30s & they rarely contact. Me I have a roof over my head, clean water, good food, a job, healthy children, able to love & am loved.....oh how wealthy I truly am.

Sam some families do swear & argue a lot, that doesn't make them better or worse than another. I can only use my life's lessons. We never swore, but did have heated discussions. The agree to disagree rule came in when it looked like it was going to go further than a discussion. For some reason by morning we were happy & loving again & didn't bear/bare grudges towards each other. My husband's family didn't believe in open, lively discussions & still bare/bear hurts from as far back as childhood. They mostly don't talk to each other & each sibling is stressed. If your happy with your family, then be so. Remember the laughter that follows, if not, speak up sooner.

Narrelle Weir Yeah, I am happy with them, but it was very stressful growing up with all the yelling though. Yes, I definately still remember the laughs and good times. All of us still talk though and would do anything for one another, so I guess it worked out. I hate to hear that about your husband and his siblings not talking. (My husband grew up the same and has the same problem with 2 of his brothers) I know he wishes it could be different. Hopefully one day he can be open about all his thoughts and feelings on things that went on as a child and how it affected him. He would feel so much better to atleast get it off his shoulders. Seriously though, he should consider setting a time to sit down with each of his siblinhs individually. I wish him and you all the happiness and luck. ✌😊

Happy to hear the lady responded to you kindly. However, I think it's cultural. I live in an English-speaking country and unfortunately there is a strong sense of entitlement and if the same situation occurred here, being nice is seen as a weakness (how screwed up is that ??!!) and it would give the rude person more power and they would most likely continue to be rude and feel they were in the right to be rude to you. Sigh.

First, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of the videos I viewed. They are very informative and I have learned quite a lot from each one. Being 70 years old and a person that comprehends from reading as well as by visual instruction. Now that I'm in my y twilight years I find that I don't process information as well as I did as a young boy. I was amazed to find the complete transcript of each video accessible for download. A very unique and beneficial tool for your viewers. However, I noticed in almost every transcript multiple uses of the word "gonna". Even though this word is the acceptable English slang for "going to" and used daily in normal casual conversations I don't believe it should ever be used in the professional sector of our society. Especially if applying for a management position with a large corporation where improper English would be very noticeable by anyone conducting the interview of an applicant. This comment was merely an observation and by no means intended to criticize. With that said again let me thank everyone involved with the production of your videos and express a very heartfelt wish for your continued success.

When one makes a rude comment to me, say for example weight gain, here is how I respond: " Say have you gained weight"? Me: Why do you ask ?" That way, the rude person has painted himself to a corner, and has nothing to say.

Great information. I would save the, “ You hurt my feelings” for a relationship in which you believe the person actually might care that they did and be willing to change. I think most people that randomly cut people down are not close enough to you , for a reason. They hardest situation I have is when the people are people that are related to my husband and I don’t want to rock the boat- create problems for him. Thank you for teaching.

To the people confused about the bookstore example, rudeness occurs in tone of voice or facial expression. And it could have been said with, "Oh that wasn't me."

In my experience I’ve tried to explain to them in a very polite way that ‘I don’t like their negative comments ‘. The result is they completely avoid me. I like to be friendly but it’s Just they don’t understand my feelings. I’m afraid I might loose my friends. I suffer within myself:(.
