YORKSHIRE DALES TOUR FEATURING BOLTON ABBEY, THE STRID, BARDEN TOWER AND BURNSALL
"Bolton Abbey to Burnsall”
Filmed 2nd November 2016
Post-production completed 18th February 2017
I return to Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, although on this occasion I visit a different part of the dale. Today’s tour starts in Bolton Abbey with its wonderful priory ruins beside the River Wharfe and a visit to “The Strid” which, although beautiful, is also very treacherous. The end of the day takes me to a gentler place as I explore the pretty village of Burnsall…..
Filmed in the Yorkshire Dales in the county of North Yorkshire. Locations include Bolton Abbey, Cavendish Pavilion, The Strid, Barden Tower and Burnsall.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.
Click here for a map showing the route of the locations used in the film. It is not a walking route, but it shows the route on which I travelled by both car and foot between the various locations featured in the film: osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/r...
DISCLAIMER: Although I work hard to ensure all information is correct to the best of my knowledge, I am only featuring information I have found online during my research when putting this film together, so I cannot guarantee that there are no mistakes or errors.
As with all the films I make, this is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I might share some of my own personal stories, and not actually intended to be a guide to the area.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler

Great video about a beautiful area. Reminds me of a visit I made there 20 years ago and attempted the stepping stones. Got part way across and lost my nerve and came back and crossed the bridge. The Strid is beautiful but I didn't realise how dangerous it is.

Thank you Maeve. I tried to cross those stepping stones whilst carrying my camera and tripod, not a good idea! Hence me ending up using that bridge :) The Strid does look very innocent but I've read so much about the dangers.

Thats the real danger of the strid! It looks like no big deal at times of the year. I think they should put 100% mortality on the signs to really drive it home. Quick question if u can remember, were there signs at all 20 years ago?

Footbridge for me too every time ! Never been to any of these places Patrick but what a great walk with lots to see and do,the Strid looked gorgeous but how awful about the honeymoon couple. In this hectic fast paced technology driven city life,you think of villages like these as a thing of the past,that no longer exists,but as you keep showing us,there are some beautiful peaceful English villages with their gorgeous cottages and greens and red telephone boxes. Your films cheer me up no end,and I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks for sharing. Pete.

I might have tried the stepping stones, but I was carrying my camera and tripod at the time, so it just felt far too risky! :) The Strid is amazing, and quite deceptive when you hear how dangerous it is. Lovely time of year to film this too as it was the start of November 2015, so the autumn colours really show in this. Beautiful villages as you say, Burnsall particularly I think is just stunning. Thanks for watching Pete :)

One month after we visited Bolton Abbey , and yet it looked warmer than the day of our visit , we sat above Bolton Abbey , up near the Monument ,By the road Patrick , with our sandwiches and flask .... Lee found The Abbey beautiful inside ,and i had to agree , she used to work with stain glass , in her previous job ,When she was based in Coalville in Leicestershire .. The riverside walks are great , we were very taken with the Strid and intend to pay it a visit , observing the fact that on your visit it looked very mossy , Burnsall looked lovely i particually liked the old road signs.. and also those benches set by the river over looking the five arch bridge ... All in All Patrick an excellent trip so thank you once again for sharing it with us All ,As always regards , Frank And Lee ......

You must have had your sarnies near where I was talking with the priory ruins behind me - that was up by the monument on the main road. The ruins look fab don't they, and such a wonderful setting too. It's worth walking down to the Strid, but you can walk to it from Bolton Abbey rather than the route I did from the Strid Wood tearooms. Those old road signs are quite common an many parts of the Yorkshire Dales, I remember seeing them in places like Settle and Malham. Thanks for watching again Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)

I was there last week. There was a sign up telling people not to use the stepping stones because some of them have fallen into the water. My sister's boyfriend decided to cross anyway and apparently he was a bad influence because an entire line of people spontaneously assembled behind him for the crossing. He, leading from the front, fell into the water about two thirds of the way across and his water bottles went floating off down the Wharf. Most people just started stepping onto the submerged rocks to get across the gaps. I jumped most of the gaps but the last one was too big so I got wet feet too. We hired an electric wheelchair for my 86 year old grandmother, which is easy to do, and we manged to cause a bit of mischief with that too. Anyway, the river and ruins are beautiful and the place has a nice gentle atmosphere and a solemn church. Is there any better place to have a cup of tea than outside a stone cottage in Yorkshire? I would recommend a visit to Bolton Abbey and also Skipton castle, which was mentioned in the video (thanks for the history). I hope to return one day to hike in the area.

Patrick, is this river dangerous only this narrow and deep section called Bolton Stride, or is the whole river dangerous? In the more relaxed parts of this river, people swim, bathe?
@solitaryrambler
@solitaryrambler 5 жыл бұрын
