Just replace the pan which contains the filter. Pans are very common on Jags to warp and leak and it's the filter so.... Also check the harness sleeve to see if it's seeping. would be a good time to replace it. there is no dipstick.

I like your procedure for just a simple drain and refill for some home mechanics..but I feel the temperature of the fluid should have been checked since the new fluid will expand and [perhaps?] over fill the transmission requirements. Some may strongly disagree with me.... but I offer [suggest?] there is a reason why the Jag specialists uses a temperature check for proper fluid levels. Personally, I would gladly pay full dealership price to ensure another 100K miles on my XK8 transmission.

I heard you can use a Ford type trans fluid, is this statement correct? Also is there a plastic tube with 3 O rings that should be replaced? I heard that's a main reason for slow leaks.

Could I ask you a question ,my Jaguar xj8 sport 2002, had automatic gearbox oil change , but they didn’t put enough oil in , today it went it went snail mode and said gearbox problem ,could low oil cause that ,

What about the filter, you don't want to change it? It appears to be leaking, like both of mine were. So i changed them over to a steel pan, & filter, also used Mercon SP fluid.

@@JaboTheMechanic Check your facts Jabo!!!! Mercon SP IS the same fluid, with red coloring in it. Originally made by Shell Check the M S D S If you know what that is. Been using this fluid in both my Jaguars for years.

It all depends on where the leak is

I have a question. I have a 1998 jaguar xj8. Automatic transmission. I noticed the transmission is shifting hard both in reverse and shifting back to drive. I’ve recently been experiencing loss of power issues where the engine just shuts off on the interstate when I start slowing down. I can press the gas but nothing. I have to pull off the road and restart the car to drive again. Usually there’s a puff of white smoke from the exhaust after a restart from the initial stall. Is this transmission related? I thought there might be a dipstick for the transmission fluid but I can’t seem to find one so I’m not sure if the fluid is low. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Thick white smoke from the exhaust is never good. Might be a warped or cracked cylinder head or head gasket. Hopefully not...

You forget to fill based upon transmission fluid temperature. Your method s incorrect.
