I’ve always loved that episode - Elsie so tenderly holding Ena as they walk around the cemetery in the snow - just shows all their spats in the street from 1940 onwards were just salt in the sugar and that they did actually care about one another very much. Miss Phoenix’s portrayal of a physically and emotionally exhausted Elsie half asleep in the chair, worried about Minnie, Ena and her own relationship all at once - it’s so subtle and she makes really interesting choices. You can see the lengthy theatre background in all of the original cast female leads - we don’t get that much on telly nowadays as acting has split into theatre, TV and film as fairly separate paths, really - sadly. I guess with the loss of repertory theatre, there IS no way for someone in their 40s to have had 20 years of reasonably consistent work in principal rôles and yet not be a household name (by virtue of playing only in Oldham or wherever), but really hone their craft before they move to TV or the West End. It’s sad: life experience really shows in anyone’s performance and the loss of rep and the rise of reality TV and the aspirations and so on for fast, famous careers that have risen with it - it has changed so, so much. Same with TV drama - those TV plays of the 1960s to 1980s were great - no budget but great performances - we need that kind of thing back. Last I remember was when BBC 2 I think it was did a season of them about 1992 - it included “Absolute Hell” with Miss Dench, which is on YT in full.

Elsie shouldn't be in a cardie! Glad she redeemed herself with that fabulous coat and fur hat - Suspenseful episode though. Poor Ena. Outstanding acting from Violet Carson.

To carry on the story, Ena traipsed the streets and never found her but someone eventually did, they found her sleeping on a park bench and Minnie was then admitted to hospital with pneumonia. Minnie didn't want anyone to know but eventually they did. Dave Smith brought her flowers and wiped her gambling debts clean and limited her gambling limits. Minnie got into that state as she lost £10 gambling and he was accused of taking advantage of her. Ena got angry at her for losing her pension as Minnie blowed her pension on silly things then would have nothing to eat, nothing to buy coal with. In fact when Ena got caught shoplifting many say it was for Minnie others say it was for her daughter, Vera Lomax.

Minnie was on the show until 1976 according to wiki, so she obviously was found. The sad part is the only shows available on the internet for us to view jump from this episode, Feb. 24, 1969 to June 2, 1969. Would be great if all these older episodes of Coronation Street could be offered in chronological order by subscription or something. I'd pay.
