This game came out during the Satanic Panic in the United States, so those warnings on the box and in the manual were most likely Rare covering their asses, as you said. Also, the NES versions of the first two Wizardry games had recommendations for players 16 and up on the back of the box. This was most likely because of the text that says a character or monster has been decapitated after a one-hit kill.

Great video! There's an Italo Calvino novel called "The Castle of Crossed Destinies" or "ll castello dei fati incrociati" where a load of travellers have to use the Sforza Tarot deck to tell their stories. It's good fun. There's also a French card game called Tarot which has its own special (and pretty!) deck of cards... but not the same as proper Tarot. And welcome back!

This was an awesome video, Octav1us! Not only is it great to have you back, but I actually owned this game! I asked for it for Christmas one year and my dad got it for me for whatever reason. The whole reason I wanted it was I thought it might be useful for fortune telling scenes in Dungeons and Dragons, but the game moves too slowly for that and...well, like you pointed out, the card readings were gibberish. A smarter teen would have asked for their own tarot deck. Anyway, welcome back, Octav1us, we've missed you!

I played this when it first came out, got it from a rental place and had my friends over, we were well under 14, being just around ten. In much the same way that a person who wants to believe can take a generic newspaper horoscope, or a vague prophecy, and insist it to be profoundly accurate, so too were we amazed by how spot on some of the readings appeared to be. Then I got the idea to ask the question of whether I ought to go to the bathroom, and all seriousness dissolved in laughter like ice in the sun.

Fantastic to see you back, Octav1us! And what a great "game" to cover. Back in the NES days my friend and I rented this from our local rentals shop to see if it was worth a laugh. It wasn't, just slow and tedious to get through. However, my friend did use the "lucky" number generator in Taboo to pick numbers his mom could play for him in Keno when she visited Las Vegas...which won him nothing. Perhaps Rare was attempting to teach us all a valuable lesson: if you believe in this kind of rubbish you deserve to be fleeced (with a particular doff-of-the-cap to whomever actually bought the cartridge when it was released.)
