George Carlin narrated for the US version. It was Michael Angelis that replaced Ringo Starr in the UK. Why I felt I needed to let you know that, I'll never know, but I can sleep soundly tonight now.
@jlindsayuk5 жыл бұрын
@jin jam You had to mention Alec Baldwin.. He was in a film called Shining Time (I think it was a spin off from some American TV Show) which crossed over to Thomas the Tank Engine. Basically, he was from "the real world", but dicking around in Sodor, covering for the Fat Controller or something. Now for my excuse.. My son is called Thomas. When he was 3, it was all that was on TV. All. Bloody. Day.
@jlindsayuk5 жыл бұрын
Also, you may be able to tell... Sleeping soundly didn't work out!
@gwishart5 жыл бұрын
@@jlindsayuk The Americans didn't get to see "Thomas & Friends" series in it's original form. Instead they got a live-action programme called "Shining Time Station" set in a railway station; with Ringo Starr (and later replacements) appearing on screen as a tiny bloke called "Mr Conductor" who lives in a magic painting and interacts with a variety of banal characters and awful puppets. Part of this involves him telling stories about a railway in "the magical and far-away land of Sodor" (apparently "fictional island off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness" wasn't deemed an exciting enough setting by the Yank TV networks). The stories were presented as the original footage from the British TV series, but with changes to the script and soundtrack - sometimes to replace British railway terminology (eg. "caboose" instead of "brake-van"); sometimes to change names of characters (eg. the Fat Controller was called by his real name of "Sir Topham Hatt", in case it made obese American kids feel bad for eating so much cake); and sometimes to tone down the plot for the more delicate sensibilities of Americans (eg. removing a lot of the threats of engines being scrapped - basically a death sentence; taking out the comments that Henry deserved to be punished for being a dick etc.). The film you're thinking of sounds like "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" which was basically a feature length version of an episode of Shining Time Station, but without the awful puppets. It seems to be have been released under the name "Shining Time Station" in some markets, presumably where people would have heard of the American TV series.

There are a few horrible punishments meted out on Sodor. In one story, an engine called Smudger was punished by having his wheels taken off, mounted on bricks and turned into some kind of track-side generator. He was stuck watching all the other engines run about FOREVER.

What I love, and will always love, is that they built a warehouse sized model layout for the whole of the Island of Sodor. They spent years playing with a large model railway, the set was so massive they filmed a series called Tug, based on New York Tug boats (which they hated, due to the underwater tracks used to move the ships around). They do a 3D universe now, but I think the physical model is much better

As someone who was a HUGE fan of Thomas as a kid, the thing everybody ignores is that episode with the train being mailed was actually a two partner and he got out and became a major charictor. All of my experience from thomas the tank engine, was its segments from the show Shining Time Station, where ringo and eventually george played 18 inch tall humans called Mr. conductor hidden in a real station and told some weird kids stories about sodor. Also, there was a jerk that constantly tried to steal money from the kids, and a jukebox full of puppets played music. Dont know if i learned any morals from it, but hey, i think puppets are cool at least. Also Octav1us seems to have a VERY specific library of books, its quite impressive
