Great little video, short and to the point with no waffling on for ages. good to find yet another Aussie gardener on here. I just harvested my Turmeric today, and despite only growing it in a smallish pot, I got close to 2 Kilos. greetings from South Australia, have subbed.

Excellent video. You answered my question on which part of the turmeric plant to replant, the crowns and you showed what they look like. Just harvested one plant last week and on my second today. ? Have you ever let plants got two or three years before harvesting and what are the results? From Florida much thanks.
@Limestone_Permaculture

Hi Chef, Turmeric is a perennial and will perpetually reproduce, so they essentially create new rhizomes each year, the rhizomes from the year before are mature & at their most potent thus best to use. The rhizomes prior to that will have begun to decay back into the soil and so the cycle repeats :) We have various gardens where we harvest turmeric, Once your plants have been growing for more than two years, you can rotate which garden to dig up from that point to ensure your always getting two year old crops.

@@Limestone_Permaculture I'm baaack... So am I right to say now with my plants 4ft high I have to wait until the leaves die back and turn brown before harvesting? My next issue is who pulled my signs that said one year old and newly planted, hard to tell the difference...I'm sure it must be my dog for me wife would never do that, right! Last question: After cleaning do you take off the turmeric skin before using? Mucho thanks mon...

So, if you just leave the turmeric in the ground, would it just keep growing that root ball and keep expanding it? Is there such a thing as turmeric roots that are too old to eat? Do they get stringy or fibrous?

I started my turmeric late this year in Texas. Mid summer instead of early spring. Though the green grew nicely, it never flowered. Can I expect rhizomes when I harvest? Thanks
@limestonepermaculture4902
@limestonepermaculture4902 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, You can expect rhizomes though they will most likely be small (a little under developed). So harvest only what you need and leave the rest in the ground to grow onto a second year.

Hi, it all depends what season your heading into..... if its winter, best to harvest this upcoming June. Save the crowns or a few good rhizomes, for replanting and eat the rest. Keep pot in a warm place that doesnt get frost. it will bounce back in mid-spring.
