The 5.4 engines in Australia have the 4 valve head and we found that the heads need bleed holes in 2 spots on each head and the rear passage in the block needs a water fitting and then all of those points need a modified thermostat housing to accommodate those bleeds. We also modify the water pump impeller to give a consistent head pressure. The result is a much smoother torque curve and the ability to lean off the mixture safely.

@madmod
@madmod 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexwhite176 These 7.3 engines making peak power at 5500rpm is actually pretty high in the revs for that many cubes. The stock vvt valvetrain is robust and quite capable at higher rpms. With little more than a proper intake and cam, you can easily get 5-600hp out of these new big blocks. Even the fact while stock, they make over 400ft/lbs from about 1500rpms all the way past 5000 is stout. This thing should sneeze out 800+ ft/lbs with less of a torque curve, more of a torque shelf.

so nice of a video so I recently recently got a Lincoln navigation 05 about a year now, and I’m a big fan of racing cars. I want something different I saw that the navigation had a V8 dual cam it was a 5.4 so I sad why not give it a shot the difference is I want to add a Whipple charger on it but this really helps because there’s not a lot of information about navigators with this type of set ups, even tho the 5.0 have this engine and the cobras. All tho they are quite different they are in the same block. This video definitely hyped me up to do this type of set up on my navigator and I can’t wait knowing the fact that it will work.

I could def see that. With a decent manifold and a good set of cams 400 rwhp would be fairly easy an aggressive setup could go well beyond that so a 10 second fox is easily believable you can get foxes into the 10s with 400 rwhp no problem set up correctly.

re: Mustang Cobra engines - The Lincoln Mk VIII 4.6ls are all but identical to '96-'98 Cobra 4.6s(I assume that you weren't looking for an '03/'04 Cobra engine at just any ol junkyard lol). They both have 'B' heads, same pistons, same rods, same Teksid block, same exhaust cams - the Mk VIII intake runs out of breath early(the Cobra intake is a popular swap), the intake cams are slightly smaller, and the crank is a 6 bolt cast compared to the 8 bolt forged - but that's basically it. As much as I'd like to see a 'big bang', I honestly don't think it's worth the time with that cast junk inside of them - but the block & heads are a great base for a race engine! Honorable mention to the 4v 4.6l in the Lincoln Aviator too - same engine as the automatic(cast crank - 3-pedals had the forged crank) Mach 1 Mustang. Better hypereutectic pistons & powdered metal rods than the cast garbage in the '90s 4v Modulars. In fact, maybe one of these would be more worthy of a 'big bang'...

All the 4 valve motors are rare. Even among the wrecking yards and supply chain rebuilders 2 valve 4.6/5.4 motors outnumber the 4 valves by more than 100 : 1. There are more 4.6 2v explorers than there were 4 valve marauders, mustangs, and navigators combined.

Wouldn't you be able to run a gt500 lower manifold/intercooler setup on one of those? Unless the heads make it different fit or whatever but they're both 5.4 4v. That would be awesome. Then you could just run any blower they make for gt500s. I would go gen3r them tvs are torqey and good on the hit that would help get that big behemoth moving lol. I would def just build the 5.4 4v in the navigator and boost it rather than doing a lightning swap. I'd rather have a built 5.4 4v over a stock lightning 5.4 2v. Much better potential.

Just throwing this out there, but... ...gen 1 Viper V10 heads will bolt onto a truck V10 with a little work... Gotta fill the coolant passages in the heads and redrill them to match the passages in the block, but they bolt right up after that. The truck V10 has a slightly taller deck height, so 1/4" spacers bolted to the intake ports will allow the matching Viper intake to bolt on. It's not the simplest swap ever - but, when you consider that you're putting Dodge Viper heads on a wheezy truck lump, that really isn't too bad for the 'fabrication inclined'! Now the gen 2-4 Viper stuff requires more work - would probably just be easier to dry deck the heads & block and just run external coolant lines(...or just suck it up and buy a Viper V10...). They're pretty wicked parts though, especially the gen 4 Viper stuff, they really pushed the architecture with that engine. IIRC, the gen 4 Viper V10 came in between something like 550-575lbs - for an 8.3l V10!!! Old school 450+cu in big blocks are typically well over 600lbs, even the 3.0l I6 2jz from the Supra weighs over 600lbs it self(funny how you never hear anyone talk about the weight of 2JZs like they talk about the size of DOHC Mod motors...)!

They've been swapped into EVERYTHING, from Mustangs to S2000s(not kidding - and there's more than one). Four Wheeler mag swapped a Viper V10 into a Durango mud truck build. There's BMW Z4s, Datsuns, Volvos, lots of pickups, Jeeps, PT Cruisers, Jaguars... As far as Triton V10 swaps... well, there's a Mustang II with one(such a SICK build)... I'm accused of being a Furd fanboy with regularity(side effects of actually having some knowledge about specific cars); but at least the Viper V10 actually has the tiniest fragment of an aftermarket, there are actual high performance products for it unlike the Mod V10. Hell, there's even aftermarket heads for the Viper V10, JM Striker heads. Can't say that for ANY Modular. Not to mention the gross split pin crankshaft in the Triton V10 - I'll take the odd fire V10 with its standard crank.

I have a 5.4l 3valve engine in my 2004 supercrew lariat, it's not a dog, but I would like to increase the horsepower and torque not to race or run racing fuel but just a strong reliable driver. I realize that I will need to run 93 octane on a turbo motor. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks Scott USAF veteran

Aftermarket block? LOL, that's a good one... No such thing as an aftermarket Modular Ford block, just like there aren't any aftermarket heads either outside of the Trick Flow 2v heads. Short answer: iron blocks are good for about 1000HP, aluminum blocks are good for basically as much power as you can dream of Long answer: The iron blocks are OK - they're good for up to ~1000HP or so, but the cylinder sleeves are very thin and they're only supported at the top and bottom of the cylinder. Mind you, a production block that can hold 1000HP isn't exactly 'weak' - I'm sure you've heard of the 5.0l Windsor's problem with splitting right in two at little more than half that power... The aluminum blocks are where it's at, they're much more robust(believe it or not), having significantly thicker sleeves that are supported by much more material than in the iron blocks. The Navigator block I don't have a hard number for as most that go past, say, 1200HP or so with a 5.4l are GT500 or Ford GT owners that are building the stock engine - and the 5.4l dry sump block in the GT and the redesigned aluminum 5.4/5.8l block in '11+ GT500s(typically known as the 'Cobra Jet block', being found in the CJ race cars and CJ crate engines) are damned works of art beef cake blocks, the strongest of all Modular blocks. With that said, I've seen more than a couple Navigator-based 5.4s pushing ~1200HP in drag cars. Don't quote me on this, but the guy that owns & drives the yellow 'Minion' '98 Mustang Cobra has a 5.4l now, which I believe is based on the Navi engine, and he's making enough power to compete with the fastest H-pattern stick shift 1/4 mile cars(he had the record for a minute with the original 4.6l engine, he's running DEEP into the 7s). To put it another way, in all my years in the Modular community(since around 2004 or so), I've never heard of anyone breaking a Navigator block, while some have busted a cylinder wall in the iron blocks. The iron vs aluminum comments are just as true for the 4.6l as well, with the aluminum 'Teksid'(foundry in Italy, same ones that make Ferrari engine castings) block produced from '91-'99 being the strongest of the 4.6s, and pretty much as strong as the aforementioned GT & GT500/CJ blocks. But, all of the aluminum blocks, 4.6 or 5.4, are good for at least 1000HP, there isn't really a 'bad one', only 'better ones'. To put their strength & durability into perspective, John Mihovetz is basically the god father of Modular performance - his best number to date with his Pro Mod/Top Sportsman car is 5.88@254MPH. Production 4.6l Teksid block, unfilled, water in both the block & heads Production Ford GT/GT500 4v cylinder heads(he's mentioned that the '96-'98 Cobra heads can perform just as well, but require more work and wear out quicker than the GT heads) Stock valvetrain(believe it or not - just the typical upgrades, valves/springs/retainers/cams) 11.5:1 compression 62psi boost 10000RPM(yup, with stock timing chains/guides, cam followers, even hydraulic lash adjusters) Over 3000HP Utterly insane for some lowly mass produced Ford parts. Obviously it goes without saying that he doesn't just take the stock parts and make over 3000HP after throwing some pistons & rods at it - he puts over a hundred hours into prepping the block & heads, including dry decking them. But, what else would you expect from parts that came from cars like a 305HP '96 Mustang? You could say that they hold up OK...

How about a budget 351C 2V making 400 HP. I know this channel doesn't spare expense because the idea is to make as much HP as possible. And that's fun to watch. But most of us will never spend $8-10K on a single engine. I've seen several builds of the 351C 2V that fall a little short of the 400 HP mark. It almost looks like the 2V is preferable for a true street car.

Can you do a build on a ford 302 and basically squeeze every last possible naturally aspirated hp out of it on a “roller block” to see how obtainable it is for everyone? Dart blocks are pricey and a lot of people use oem blocks. It doesn’t have to be a true roller but pretend it is 😉. Itb’s and equal length headers, all the way 🏎💨

I hope you'll get Ford to send you a 7.3L Godzilla to be let loose on. Those things are BEGGING for boost once you throw some ARP studs and forged 4340 rods in them. (why does EVERYTHING have powdered metal time bombs in them now?) I know with a simple intake, tune and headers that engine out the box makes over 500hp and almost 600 ft lbs.. to see one with some head work and turbos would be killer. I'm sure they'll shoot past 1,000 in no time and that variable oil pump and squirters will help keep it alive.. Hell I don't think 1200 would be unreasonable at that engine size.. and the torque will probably be right there with it.

How durable are these long timing chain motors at say 600-700 hp at say 6500 rpm? Would they last for 200 passes down the dragstrip?
@Micah2391
@Micah2391 4 жыл бұрын
sanger440 ask cleetus McFarland. He has a rev limit living Shelby 5.4 4v that makes almost this much to the wheels in a crown Vic. The timing chains can take a lot of abuse, but they are generally the most frequently changed part just for preventative measures. A lot can go wrong if they pop. If you’re making a lot of power and race a lot, I’d imagine it be safe to replace the chains once every season, at the very least every other season. They take the most beating when they see a lot of rev limit action.

Love me some Cleetus but they tear up there stuff for their channel. I am a bracket racer who wants 600-800 hp that will live without much maintenance for a season or 2 (300 passes). My BBC with all good parts does that. No one I bracket race with runs these long timing chain Fords, but that doesn't mean they won't work. Which is why I asked the question.

sanger440 lol yea those guys are wild, but usually they treat their stuff the way they do to find limits and then improve. But as you can see from the comments left above, the OEM chains will suffice for your goals and live a long healthy life as long as you’re not always on the limiter.
