He was explaining to those who dont understand what a difference this stuff makes...gm guys just see the gm came out on top ultimately and dont wanna hear any good points on why the ford wasnt setup optimally and was leaving alot of power on the table. They didn't need to do anything more to the ford motor other than adding alot of timing and giving it another 1000-1500 rpm which it would have easily been able to do and in fact make ALOT more power. @@DeadUgly1 no it isnt better do more homework on your own engines since you're a "ford guy". They both do things differently ways the small block ford, mod motors and the coyote based engines all have a ton of potential. Despite what ls guys say its not always 10x cheaper to go ls either. You compare 5.3 and 4.8 which can be had cheap of course bang for buck is gonna be pro ls the engines can be had dirt cheap yet have close to the same potential vs anything larger ls based theyre cheaper because they're dime a dozen theyre EVERYWHERE. when you compare them to old mod motors the bottom end, the rods is particular, are alot stronger on the ls vs the old mod motors not in the terminator, gt500 ad ford gt. All other mdulars pre coyote got weak ass rods so junkyard motor vs junkyard motor the ls is gonna win in all out how much power can be made on stock bottom end tests. The coyote can go blow for blow with any ls period...it does cost more but cost continues to fall the more they made. Again cost is about availability there are way more 4.8 and 5.3 vs coyotes so of course theyre gonna be cheaper. You talkin 6.0 price is a lot higher and ls3 and the lt stuff you're talking coyote money. Not every ls is cheap that is a big misconception. And they certainly aren't "better" unless by better you mean they can take more reliable power in stock for vs a pre coyote mod motor that ISNT a ford gt, gt500, or terminator (or cobra r) engine then yes they can do that. Against the ladder 4 it's a different story but again it's about availability theyre more rare so are gonna cost more. The 96-98 cobra is a great underrated engine youre rods and piston upgrade away from making 1000 with turbos all day long. The ls bottom end is stouter than pre coyote mod motors outside those I mentioned that is easily upgradeable. The money you spend trying to get the Chevy to work in the mustang you could just built the mod motor for not much more cost wise. Dont just regurgitate what others say do your homework ford has some good stuff man no reason at all to say ls is better lol.

I think the biggest difference would be the air to air vs. air to water intercooler and wonder what the air charge temps were for the two engines? That, the smaller throttle body and timing differences would probably explain the power differences. After being kicked out of engine masters for being so much better than the LS, I would be really surprised, if everything else was equal, that the Mod. motor wouldn't make more power than the LS. After all that, I would be interested to see what the Coyote with the same setup, as they are becoming much more available in wrecking yards.

I just picked up an entire running and driving ‘01 Navigator with that engine for $750 from a family friend so I can swap that drivetrain including the “real-time 4WD” transfer case into my ‘77 F150 Shortbed 4x4. I’ve always wanted a Coyote in my Ford but this deal was too good to pass up. Engine has about 200k miles on it but I figured if I was ever going to own a 5.4L Triton engine than it might as well be the DOHC version that’s pretty similar to a Coyote. The transmission was completely replaced with a brand new unit 60,000 miles ago as well so I’m actually looking forward quite a lot going this route instead. I’ve been thinking that I can keep the engine the way it is and used it as a stock engine to get the swap taken care of and settle all the tidbits and tuning required to make the swap work the way it supposed to and then start modifying things and build the engine for boost with a supercharger and a conservative boost level. I don’t think I’d want 800hp but 600 sounds pretty good to me.

Probably not enough difference to worry about. Remember that the Ford made less power N/A than the Chevy. So it's going to make less power boosted too, regardless of small differences in intercooler temp. The 2 degree difference in total ignition timing probably made more difference under boost.

Agree HotGritz910, I would like to further point out, besides the LS with ONLY the cam and heads upgraded, that it is still, what the Ford Boys like to call "old technology" since it only has one cam and it is IN THE BLOCK. Even with all the turbo plumbing, the LS will take up less room in the engine bay. AND, if you think about it, having the 4 valve engine that was relatively low production, how can this realistically be an "apples to apples" comparison - when the LS was taken from the junkyard (for probably less than 1/3 the cost of the Triton)? Not a direct comparison as he stated in the first sentence but i'd say pretty comparable in a lot of respects. The 5.4 needed to be wound up a lot higher and results would have been much closer but it's hard not to be impressed with how well that 5.3 did with heads and a cam in my opinion. 5.4 should definitely make more horsepower than the 5.3 but I doubt the torque would be as good. Watch his other 5.4 vids, Richard is a big fan and I was very impressed with them as well. I can't afford to modify one so I'll stick to my LS stuff but have tons of respect now

hold on for the 4.6l 4v engines you can find in the lincoln mark viii pretty cheap for the whole car around 2k or probably good amount in the junkyards :)

Always hard to compare 2 valve engines to 4 valve engines. Typically I would think a 4.6 4 valve engine would be a more direct comparison to a 5.3 LS. Yeah the LS would have more displacement but the 4.6 would have 4 valve heads and more revs. The power this 5.3 makes is a testament to how good LS heads are. This is definitely an apples:oranges comparison. BOTH would be a hoot to drive though.

that was a 4v 5.4
@scottgas12994 жыл бұрын
@@codyramos3200 yeah, I know. Never said it wasn't. The 4 valve heads gives the 5.4 an advantage regardless if displacement is close or not.

@@petrolhead8851 thats why its hard to compare these 2 engine. The 4 valve heads make it breath like a larger engine. I would think a better comparison would the 5.4 4 valve and an LS2

The LS has aftermarket heads though, so not too surprising
@BigMikesGarage4 жыл бұрын
@@RyTrapp0 The porting work on those 4 valve heads probably cost as much as the aftermarket LS heads, not to mention the cost of the cams. The 5.3 could have done the same thing with factory heads. That's one of LS engine's big strengths, the factory heads are outstanding. A set of surface milled 799 or 243 heads would have been able to make similar power numbers. There was MUCH more money invested in the 5.4 as tested than the 5.3.

That's a waste of time, everyone knows the shortblock side of the answer. It would be 5.4 shortblock = 5.3 LS plus rods/pistons. Google can find the results of a fast intake/TVs 215 heads, cam and hardware. Or a Sullivan intake, 4v cams, and a stage 1 port job on 4v heads
