Looking into this type of side hustle for exactly the reasons you mentioned - to get out from behind the computer. It has been nearly 12 years since I had a job and while financially things are great, staring at the same four walls day after day does take a mental toll on a person. There must be something wrong with your electrical system if you have to unplug it every time you dump. Such as wrong fuse or insufficient wiring. You may need an additional heavy duty circuit going to the trailer for that purpose. Or you could just put a switch on the trailer to disconnect that circuit while you're dumping. That would be easier than unplug and replugging every time. It could even be wired up to a relay to automatically disconnect whenever you hit the button to dump. Just a few suggestions. 😀
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s the way the nexhaul trailer electronics are designed. And this stopped happening when I added a second battery. I did think of adding a relay to cut power when the pump is on, but now with two batteries it never gets low enough to try to pull from the truck. At the time it only had a 400 amp hour battery which just wasn’t enough. Appreciate your comment and all very good ideas!!
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
And it doesn’t always blow it, just blows it sometimes when the battery was too close to dead and it would try to pull from truck. But now with the extra battery I’m storing plenty of power for several ups and downs. Seems that with 400 amp hour it’s just 2 ups and downs and battery is depleted if a full 5t. But all good now with the changes I’ve made

@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. For sure, this will vary from truck to truck and trailer to trailer. I never had a problem before this trailer either. But something with the way this trailer is wired allows it to try to pull 50amp from the bat line on the 7 pin if it is not unhooked. And the 50amp draw will blow the 30 amp fuse. Blows within 2-3 dumps every time if not unhooked.

Truck running to charge battery on trailer but also disconnect trailer to avoid pulling juice and blowing fuse?
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment! What I meant was that I keep the truck running when it's idle so that it's always charging up the battery. IE, I don't turn it off waiting to be loaded at quarry, or when I get out on the scales, etc. Obviously it does not charge when it's unplugged, but you must unplug this trailer while operating the dump or it will blow the fuse. So I unplug it only when dumping, but plug it back in. Many people shut their truck off to save fuel during idle tasks. I am saying I keep mine running to keep the batteries on the dump trailer charged. This is important if running back to back loads. I now have 2 batteries on this trailer as well. Sorry for the confusion, but I feel most know what I was meaning by this. But happy to clear it up for any other readers of this comment thread.

Under CDL weight (26,000) will likely be different from state to state. The VSP, VA DOT, and my insurance agent have told me that it’s not for-hire driving as I own the material that I am hauling. It’s considered a private carrier. Class B would be needed as a single vehicle over 26,000 and a trailer not over 10,000. And a Class A would be over 26,000 with a trailer over 10,000. But the under 26,000 regs will vary by state. For me, being over 10,000 and under 26,000, it’s just a DOT physical.

Now, if customer called ahead and bought material, and I picked it up and delivered it, that is for hire as I’m transporting material that is not mine. In my use case and I have been stopped by DOT and talked with DMV, I’m not for hire, I’m a private carrier. The material on my truck is always my material.

Because when I had only 1 battery, it did not store enough amp hours for more than 1 dump. So if I had to go up and down more than once, it would try to pull from the 30amp power line on the 7pin. And I have blown that fuse 6-7 times. But the truck has a seperate fuse for the 30amp power line to the 7pin. Now I have 2 batteries + the purkey charger and never had the issue again since. I'm curious how your getting around the the CDL requirement? as CDL is required by Federal DOT when your trailer is over 10,000lbs (Trailer + load). 5 Tons is 10,000lbs and i'm guessing that the nexhaul trailer is around 4900lbs. Meaning you legally could only haul 5100lbs of load. Wondering if your state has different rules then DOT. As I have looked into this with my truck and found out that I would need a CDL.
@RockyBottomAcres8 ай бұрын
It’s not a matter of “getting around”. Federal requirements kick in at 26,001. Under 26k, does not need a cdl. The rule you’re talking about is a trailer over 10k and a gvwr total of 26,001 or more. State regulations do vary in this 10k-26k range though. In VA, totally legal as configured. It would not be if I had a dually, as I’d be over.

@HUSTLE_MONEY2 жыл бұрын
I'm not in this business but you would never "have" to create an LLC. How you structure your company is up to you. Speaking of liability, I'm sure you would want to carry insurance regardless. A google search of your local country laws should help with what type of licenses/permits you might need. For prices you'd do some market research so that you're competitive. Starting an LLC is typically a good idea as long as you follow all of the rules associated with having an LLC, such as filing required annual/biannual paperwork and paying the fees. Never co-mingle LLC funds with your personal funds, determine how you will pay yourself etc. If you don't follow the rules of an LLC you won't have the liability protection it offers. For example, you accidently poor rocks on a customer's vehicle or injure someone...you're liable..so having a properly run LLC and insurance should protect your personal assets etc. Good luck, Brother.

Open an account at any rock place get your re sellers permit. Resell the material and charge a delivery fee
@bonusking12248 ай бұрын
Maybe you answered this in the video, maybe not. I didnt come across the answer, I skipped around. Why would the customer hire you to haul this rather than the quarry who usually offer delivery service for an additional fee?
@windturbinerockstar8 ай бұрын
The cost per load.
@RockyBottomAcres6 ай бұрын
Typically access. Sometimes quarries won’t leave the asphalt/concrete. Other times they have significantly larger trucks and the customer might need a smaller load, etc.

Why would you go all the way to Vesuvius and not to Stuart’s Draft?
@RockyBottomAcres2 жыл бұрын
Simple - both quarries in Stuart’s Draft only have crushed brown rock. The quarry I went to has natural, uncrushed brown stone. This customer wanted a river rock style appearance, and why the rock didn’t come from another quarry.
@RockyBottomAcres2 жыл бұрын
Some customers just want brown rock - and don’t care whether it’s crushed or not crushed. Others, do care and want a specific product style.

Where are you running your ads and how much are you charging for 5ton loads.
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
You can advertise in local yard sale groups, Craiglist, or Facebook ads. I live off a highway so I’ve made a pretty big billboard. Careful not to price your services too cheaply - there are significant expenses maintaining equipment. You should use $65/hr for your transport time at a minimum; or $4/mi from pickup to drop off location. If you go too cheap to make orders, you might quickly find yourself unable to pay yourself and afford the upkeep. I’m charging rock price at quarry + delivery.

@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Check your towing capacity on the truck. Most dump trailers will weigh 3-4k empty. Make sure there is enough payload for the trailer + the cargo in the trailer. If I were to guess, you probably could only carry a few tons but check to be sure. Another option is an under CDL dumptruck.

Oh god no! Not with that 5.4, detonate that old turd 💩
@wildbill23c2 жыл бұрын
You could do it for a while but you'd quickly wear out that truck doing so....its only rated for maybe 6-8k, a 14-16 foot dump trailer is going to weigh close to 4k empty, meaning you are only going to be able to haul 1-2 tons worth of materials in the trailer...and at that you are going to be max tow capacity with a 1/2 ton pickup...I wouldn't try it, way too much risk involved due to weights and being able to stop and maneuver quickly in an emergency.
@stumpbumpers2 жыл бұрын
I have the same 03 F250 with 5.4. I pull a 14ft 7 ton dump trailer fine. 12k towing is max, if I remember correctly. I don’t haul all the time or far. Get a single cylinder dump with a scissor hinge, not small twin cylinders. I just realized you have a F150, in that case nope. Mine F250 is at maximum capacity. However, the new F150 have the same tow rating, HP and torque as my 20 year old F250.

With fuel prices been charging by the loaded mile, $5-$6 per loaded mile. There are occasionally times I drop below it a little if doing back to back and sometimes above if I’m hauling something like wood that has longer loading times.

So who paid for the rock?
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Hi Manuel, I pay for the rock when I am on the scales. This is actually a legal thing in Virginia, because I am not a for-hire driver, the material I haul has to be owned by me. The material is owned when I pay for it on the scales. This may very from state to state.

A lot of different lead sources - I’ve used Craigslist with some success but not a lot, although it’s free. I get a couple leads a month there. Google PPC has been very beneficial to me. Also made a Google business listing in my area for gravel/dirt, that has worked well. And you can try Angie’s list / home advisor, people look there too. The best I have found so far is yard signs. I have a 6x12 sign hanging across two trees by the highway I live on. By far the most leads.

Hi I am planning to start this business with small budget. I am considering to buy used tundra. I would appreciate your thoughts on this type of truck?
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Tundra might be a little limited. Maybe get a smaller dump trailer as I’m sure 3 tons or so would likely max a tundra towing (I could be wrong). Make sure to have a good brake controller on trailer.
@wildbill23c2 жыл бұрын
With this stuff you need a 1 ton pickup or larger...that Tundra ain't gonna handle these types of loads very long.

I have two ways I’ve been pricing to try to figure out which way is more reliable: - I’ve been looking at GPS time and multiplying it by 125% for moving slower. And taking that time and using 75/hr. So let’s say GPS says 60 mins. I plan on 75 minutes which is about $95 delivery. - Then another way I price is based on mileage. I take GPS round trip mileage and multiply by $1.75 per mile. This comes back to assuming an avg speed of 40 mph and this makes about $70-75 an hour using this methodology as well. But I like the hours calculation best. Seems to be more on point. Mileage can really screw you if you are all interstate vs all town driving.
@RockyBottomAcres3 жыл бұрын
Don’t undercut yourself... these trucks create a lot of overhead. Maintenance isn’t cheap... and fuel is ~ 10mpg on truck and 6mpg on dump truck. Someone will always do it cheaper than you. Work on building clientele and reliable service to your customers.

Seems like gooseneck trailers have become less popular over the years.
@RockyBottomAcres2 жыл бұрын
Honestly because of the narrowness of the drive, I don’t think I would have made it in there with a gooseneck. I would have needed far more swing to keep the trailer tracked on pavement. I have a flatbed gooseneck for equipment and prefer it a lot more for sure.
@Ezralasure Жыл бұрын
I’m just confused about where you get the business. Do you just post ads online and wait for individual consumers to order deliveries or do you pick up contracts from the quarry’s themselves?
