The woman whose voice they sampled must have been quite a character in real life, I get the impression that she was hamming it up for the agents in the field, you know, to give them a little chuckle as they copied their instructions. The way she shouts "FÜNF!!" cracks me up every time, also her drawling "neeeuner" and "nuuuuuull".

All of the voices in the number stations are digitally created, none of them are real people. The decision was made due to the likelihood of the speaker being targeted for kidnapping by hostile agents

@@djredeye7610 it is true that they *mostly* used audio sampling, either analog or digital, for the actual messages as broadcast but there are very few that used completely synthesized electronic voices. And before the '90s live announcers actually *were* common on number stations. The "on-air talent" were actually safe from kidnapping as they wouldn't have been privy to any sensitive information. Most likely she would have been a secretary or other low level employee in a heavily guarded embassy or government/military building, but who knows, they could have just hired some random civilian to do the job. For example, say an unmarked envelope arrives in the mail every week; an arbitrarily selected woman reads the enclosed list of random numbers into a cassette recorder and mails the tape to a post office box in another city, or dials an unlisted number and recites the list into the phone. Then she goes on with her everyday life until the next envelope arrives. Point is, she'd just be reading a meaningless list of numbers, kidnapping and torturing this poor lady for information would be costly, futile, and unnecessary. Spies aren't stupid.
