Track Name: Gong Station Chimes Disk: 1 Track: 07 Language: German Another good one. One of my favourites, in fact. Very ominous, could almost be an actual song, if not for the numbers.

***** Voices unheeded by those who don't know and echo into the lonely night, but to those who speak it, very important, if not illicit, information. I remember picking this up at the VERY end of the broadcast, back when I was 4, in 1991, and we were camping. My mom let my sibling and I use the Shortwave radio she brought along, and we got this loud, resounding BONGS. I think my sibling and I were fascinated, very haunting, but I was never scared by them. I was a weird kid. What's worse is, WWV scared me. XD Geeze, did I have my priorities screwed up, but whenever dad tuned our radios after a change in Daylight Savings Time, he'd do it with WWV, and I'd hide in my bedroom. I've grown out of that, and now use WWV as a quick reference for condx. My favorite Clandestine Station has got to be the Tyrolean Music Station, lots of polka, though we pick up V2a and HM01 pretty regularly. Sadly, no more fancy intros for us; V2a and HM01 are rather plain...

@ZoeThePirate10 жыл бұрын
Theory on this station is that the music wasn't originally so creepy (and IIRC, anecdotal evidence states that that was the case). It's likely that the bells were recorded at an early point in the station's history, but after decades of use, the tape stretched to the point that the sound, when played at a normal speed, took on a lower pitch and also became distorted. However, I think it sounds better after the tape was damaged. ;) It lends the entire proceeding a touch of foreboding and an ominous overtone.

It was also transmitted on shortwave. It also sounds like it has been recorded from a speaker but that could be effects or, like you say, wear and tear over the years. Various compression methods usually don't do any good either if it has been shared over badly encoded MP3s e.g.

G03 - Gongs or Chimes G03 was a numbers station operated by the East German army (NVA). This station was well known for it’s eerie gongs and chimes intro signal, which was played from a tape. Over time, the tape containing the gongs sound had stretched out and distorted over time, making it sound even creepier as it aged. This was significantly noticeable by the time it went inactive. The voice of G03 was created by using the Stasi Sprach Morse Machine, and was manipulated in a way to make the voice sound higher than usual. The station was transmitted from Zeesen, but was remotely controlled from Wernsdorf outside of Berlin. G03 was last observed on May 9th,1990 after the thawing of the Cold War was initiated by Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, which lead to the Brussels conference of world powers in November 1990. After the final transmission was sent, the West German DPA news agency reported on the station: “They were always preceded by a gong being struck several times. Then on shortwave, a frequency of 3220 kHz, (really 3258kHz) one heard a synthetic voice speaking in a metallic tone: eg. one, seven, five, three, eight, combinations of numbers in groups of five conveying coded news from East Berlin to agents in the FGR and neighboring foreign countries. Once again the routine broadcast was expected on Thursday evening by the FGR counter intelligence service, but it never came. The voice of espionage has fallen silent.” Final Message From G03 The final Gongs and Chimes broadcast was certainly not routine. The last message started with the Gongs intro, and then drunken NVA soldiers singing a well known children’s song “Alle meine Entchen” (“All My Ducklings”). Before that, one of them says: “Und nun die Sendung fuer das aufgeweckte Kind” (“And now the transmission for the bright child”).

I think when the gong gets high pitched and goes back down, it is not a stretched tape. I think the listener was listening to it in SSB mode, bumped the knob (SSB changes in pitch when frequency is changed) and thus had to turn it back down/up to the original frequency to get the right pitch back.
@vichoste2 жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@Jenast7 ай бұрын
Thats exactly what happened. But the stretched tape refers to the gongs themselves appearing out of tune and off pitch than what they’ve originally sounded. Another thing good to note is that this recording is in Single Side Band, but the station was broadcasted in AM. This makes this recording sound even more distorted . But there was definitely a defect in the original tapes overtime. Ringway Manchester and “buzzarchives” made good videos related to this

Dude.. but can you imagine moving to a new place and you see this weird ass tower in the distance that creeps you out, so one day you go to it and it’s the shit on screen, and then your station picks something up and its THIS?

@OliverWood the reason is that after the cold war the use of number stations was less needed.

Those chimes at the start are pretty creepy, I'm not completely sure what number stations are used for but this is interesting to listen to!

I could imagine the gong chimes actually coming from a haunted grandfather clock or something. God I really shouldn't watch these while sleep deprived.

If this chimes from this number station on a grandfather clock would probably be a pain in the ass to make

No clue why, but all I could hear in my sleep last night was the gongs and chimes and it creeped me out so much. I don't remember much from the dream, I just remember hearing the noise and a really dark room
