This is an introduction to the first section of the the edX course from "Brain to Symptom - introduction to neuroscientific psychiatry" by psychiatrist and course director Christoffer Rahm, and Karolina Sörman, Head of unit Continuing Education Center for Psychiatry Research, researcher in clinical neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet and assistant course director.
Our aim is that this first section will set the stage for subsequent parts of the course, but also that it will generate some interesting discussions about where psychiatry currently stands, and where it might be heading in the near future. Learning outcomes of this first section include:
1. Being able to identify major structures of the human brain and their
corresponding functions.
2. Reason about general disease models in psychiatry and
3. Discuss and evaluate emergent models and frameworks in psychopathology.
