I have an English Mastiff and he comes from a very good line. He is not fat but fit and runs like the wind. Love the history. Im curious as to know where it says the English Mastiff is a dependent of the cane corso. In my research of Mastiffs the English is the creater through cross breeding of all other Mastiffs. I will have to read into that. As for breeding the English Mastiff with smaller dogs I think that would NOT be wise. The last thing we need is more cross breeding.

Yep, they're a far cry from what they used to be in ancient times, but after having own 5 Neapolitan Mastiffs, if one is lucky you get a very pure (very expensive) animal, and believe me, they're Alpha in every sense, not very fast (females are often faster more nimble) unless you exercise them very often, true, but they will take and corner animals 3 times their size. All of that combined with finesse to have them around 2 year olds and their extremely calm temperament makes one great friend.

The bite pressure is a matter of physics not temperament. The mechanics prove that the bigger the head the strong the bite. Mastiffs have the biggest heads in dogdom therefore the highest bite force. A Dogue de Bordeaux has the largest head in proportion to the rest of the body. This gives them the highest bite force per pound of body weight.
@ciroalphalyon36626 жыл бұрын
interesting that dogo de Bordeaux suck at bite work. I have never seen one grip like Presa, Fila or Bandogs , or smaller breeds like APBT and American Bulldogs
@JCgarageworks5 жыл бұрын
Actually your statement is incorrect. The Kangal has the highest bite force at 743 pounds per square inch. It currently has the world record. You are correct about bigger heads typically means larger jaw muscles though.

Cross breeding Has already created unstable temperments. Has anyone read the PSI of the English Mastiff bite?
@ciroalphalyon36626 жыл бұрын
if done correctly crossbreeding can improve many aspects of a dog's genetics; but it has to be done with great knowledge and care

Working type Mastiffs are still the same. It is only the show type that lacks stamina and soundness! Working types also live to be 14-15 years as opposed to the inbred show dogs. The Pie bald ones tend to be very much Alpha and they really should only be for knowledgeable owners who understand them. In the right hands these guys are just totally awesome! True Old School Breeders breed all colours, only around 1300 dogs survive to true form.Most people will never ever see one.

@harshs9512 жыл бұрын
your wrong, the temperaments are softer, they aren't as agile, they were descendants from cane corsos.

Google Mastador and you'll see some pics. I didn't coin the term. Beautiful dogs. Like a big, sturdy (or sturdier) Labrador.
@Stefan-ox5sk7 жыл бұрын
I know you didn't, was just announcing it like medieval British, on account of the documentary lol. Do you know if there's any functional work type benefits from crossing these two breads? I was thinking maybe the Mastiff could make the retriever swim longer being stronger but I don't really know.
@crispmom7 жыл бұрын
Well, English Mastiffs were traditionally used to bring down big game so a Mastiff-Lab mix would have the potential to be a good hunting dog, I'd expect. I have a female fawn-colored English Mastiff and a male black Lab. I'm soooo tempted to breed them. She's a little too wary of strangers (but otherwise an excellent protector and companion) and he's never met a stranger (an outgoing "people dog" like most Labs); I think a mix of their temperaments would be perfect.

The sloppy jowled, pendulous lipped dogs of today are a relatively recent breeding creation of man. These dogs have been bred for appearance and frankly are not very functional. Observe drawings of the older working dogs in action in this video and you will see the difference very clearly. The working types did not have a problem of biting through their own pendulous lips when catching and holding. Even today, where you find working catch dogs you will find that they do not have the modern drooler's pendulous lips.
