I've built the 1/1000 Klingon Bird of Prey before. It actually turned out pretty decent. I guess I forgot how long it actually took me to complete.
The basic construction is pretty straight forward, though there's much more clean up required than there should be on a model kit developed in the last 5 years. Other than the clean up there's very few seams that need attention. That's where it gets misleading.
Once you build you it you think, 'Great. I'm almost done!'
Not so.
The Klingon Bird of Prey has a very detailed paint scheme. It's not complex, there's just a lot of different coloured panels to tend to.
Some people may mask and air brush. I chose to hand paint, because I enjoy hand painting...and I don't think it would be faster to mask and air brush, given the scale of the model.
Once the painting is completed you're still not done! This little bird still needs to be weathered. A technique that really brings it to life.
I did up the difficulty level by trying something new, so that's on me.
I opted to use oils for the weathering, instead of my usual technique of powders and pastels.
It's not an overly difficult technique, but it took some getting used to.
I also had to do it a couple of times because of errors on my part. I used Q Tips for the clean up and they pulled all the weathering off the model. Recessed areas included!
I did switch to paper towel, too much better effect. But I was also slowed down my my own impatience. I did't wait for the weathering layer to dry completely before clean up, resulting in having to re-apply.
It was, however, a good learning experience and I suspect I'll continue using oils for weathering on future builds.
