2023 CRF450 wont start. Can hear the starter for a second but wont start. Come along as I dig in and get her 100% again. Should be the same for the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 CRF450r as well as the CRF250r with E start.

Your welcome. Sorry to hear that happened at such low hours. I kinda think starting while in gear with clutch in is one of the causes of this failure. As it puts more stress on the reduction gear.

At 11:20 and 11:36 seems you didn’t have the same part number. I learned from Mr.Lexdfox that the part number ending with A11 is the replacement part which remedies the problem.

Yup, honda does sometimes update the part if its been a problem and will change the part number.

Great videos! I picked up a 2019 450L for my boy last month. The starter was bad when I got it, would only bump start. I replaced the starter with OEM along with the gear you show in the video. After that it started right up, but sometimes it will do what yours is doing in the video, sometimes intermittently. Since the repair the new gear doesn't even have 1 hour on it! Once this gear slips one time is it shot? My issue sort of "feels" like an electrical issue, IDK. I've always been a Honda guy but I can not believe they have this design issue.

I feel ya, Honda screwed the pooch on this starter system on this bike. I have found if its intermittent its often the starter clutch that can grab sometimes and sometimes not. Also starter solenoids can do the same thing. Did you change out the solenoid yet? Its the cheaper and easier thing to try first.

When you were testing that gear, were you holding down the start button or just clicking it? mine sounds exactly the same and I used a marker just like you did and it showed exactly what yours showed. I ordered the part but not sure if it is the starter motor too ? do you know if it sounds the same with a bad stater motor ?

I'm just pressing the start button. If you marked that gear the marks dont line up anymore after testing then I would start by changing that out.

Hey man, awesome video! Super helpful. I just bought a 2023 crf450r and the starter kicks on and off like it was in this video except it is intermittent. I saw your reply saying if it is intermittent then it is most likely the starter clutch, is there a way I can bench test the starter clutch to verify that is what is wrong? Also pretty much everytime I turn the bike off, I hear a funny noise that sounds like it is coming from the starter, is that normal or what may that be?

Also, curious if low coolant could potentially make this occur? Today I disassembled majority of the bike which involved removing the rads because they’re bent and there was maybe 300-400mL of coolant if I had to guess. Im a Yamaha guy so this Honda world is totally new to me for the time being!😂

@@jacobdeore8533 Hello. The sound down by the starter when the motor is shutting down is totally normal. The starter clutch is a one way clutch between the starter motor and the crankshaft. When the engine is shut down it often will stop spinning on the compression stroke, and then go backwards a hair because the compression will push the piston back down some. Its engages the starter clutch and will spin the starter backwards for a second. Its normal and they do it even brand new. To get a idea whats going on when it intermittently doesn't turn over, while its acting up and not starting pull the small clutch cover off (the small cover, not the whole water pump and all only the small cover) and try starting it while peeking between the clutch and larger clutch cover to see if the starter clutch is slipping by. You can also jump the starter relay to turn the starter on with the smaller clutch cover off to help give you more time to look around in there and see whats going on. Be careful with the coolant level on that bike, its known to blow its head gasket and drink its coolant if allowed to run too hot.

The clicking is the starter solenoid, if the computer doesnt sense the motor spin as soon as the starter button is pressed it will pull back out on the starter solenoid. Theres so many things that can cause this from a bad starter, bad starter clutch, bad reduction gear, to a locked up motor. I have 3 videos cover these like this video here, if you catch the other two it should get you better up to speed on all these details and might guide you to the cause of the issue. Hello. You can try sending 12 volts directly to the starter motor by jumping the starter relay to see if the starter is good or not.

Yeah starter clutch, or starter reduction gear, or stripped out gears on the starter motor or reduction gear.

Hello. I checked the part number. Thats surely for a crf250rx. It sits between the starter and the starter clutch. It should fit your bike. Did you get it figured out yet?

I have jumped starter solenoids with lithium batteries many times with no issues. I would fix the starting issue if you can though.

Been fixed the said it was the same issue as the video just wasn't sure if it would start of the solenoid if starter clutch was knackerd they said the battery was buggered too but when I checked it wasn't

I often get asked what I think of the newer Honda's (CRF250r and CRF450r) and my answer is they are good bikes built well however you should know there can and will be a day you show up to the track and hit the start button and it wont start. Its just so common with these newer Hondas.

I am having a similar problem with my crf450r 2018. I can spinn my gear with my hands. When I though it was that a pressed the starting button( without the gears) and the starter spins for 1 second and stops. Can you help me with at som advice?

It will only turn the starter for a split second if it doesn't see the stator spin then it pulls out on the starter. If you need to keep the starter spinning to diagnose a problem you will have to jump the terminals at the starter relay.

What if it’s turning over, but when it cuts off it doesn’t turn over again? I have to wait a while for it to cool off. Then it struggles to turn over. I’ve had a top end rebuild recently. Do you know what this could be?

Mine does the same thing. Fires up then if I pull off mid moto and kill it, it takes about 5-10 minutes to get it started again. Don’t know if it’s the relay starter or reduction gear

If that gear goes bad is there any chance it binds up. My bike won’t turn over as if something is bound up. I changed starter still same problem.

No, it wont keep the motor from spinning. I would start by checking that the motor is not locked up. Remove the little round cover that takes a allen on the right side of the motor and use a allen head in side that to spin the motor clockwise. Does it spin by hand, feeling only compression and valve opening events. Or is it locked up good and tight?

I would pull the oil filter and check for gold brass color debris. Trying to rule out a lower rod bearing going bad.
