Why is it that when I hook a jump box to mine it will start right up I just put a new lithium battery and it does exact same one you got right there and it was fine for like 3 days. I put a JD jetting and it seems like it started doing it after that

JD jetting? Do you mean the CDI? If it starts with the jump box only... I would try a different battery and if that doesnt work then look at the starter. Sometimes starters can pull too much juice when they are about to give up.

Could be a few things. Fuel pump turning on is good, we know the start button and the ECU is working. Its not seeing the motor spin so its pulling out on the starter. I have 3 videos on theses bikes with starting issues, it covers all these areas and that should surely help.

Hello, today I removed my stator cover on my 2022 Honda CRF250R. The stator windings got sheard from hex bolt that loosed up from flywheel. There are 6 torx bolts (Part# 90086-K95-AA0) that go through the flywheel into the Clutch Outer, Starting (Part# 28125-K95-A21) you can find them on the Starting Clutch Diagram. I am wondering if anyone knows the torque settings for those 6 bolts. Any help will be much appreciated, thank you. Also if anyone knows the torque specs for the 3 stator bolts that hold stator onto the left side cover. Thanks again.

Hello. I checked the manuals I have and cant seem to find them torque specs in the manuals. But I would be ok just using thread locker on them and tightening them by hand to what I felt was good and tight but not so tight to risk damaging threads.

I’m kinda confused @5:28 so if it sparks with no sound the starter is done what if it sparks and you also hear it trying to turn over does that mean the starter is fine and the problem might be the starter gear

I just bought a 2022 CRF250R the bike fires up and runs. I took it on a trail ride and after 30-40 mins the bike died out of nowhere. I tired bump starting but no luck. Starter button would turn over but did not have enough juice to start. Luckily I was with some friends who let me ride one of their bikes back to camp to grab a tow strap and a portable jump starter. I was able to start the bike with the jump starter and ride back to camp. I am worried to ride it now in fear of getting stranded. Do you think it could be something wrong with the charging system on the bike? I want to believe it is just the battery, but i am able to recharge the battery and the bike fires up fine. My thought is that maybe the stator or charging system is not working (a fuse?) Maybe the bike runs until the battery is too low to run fuel pump and then dies? maybe its not getting enough power from motor to recharge while ridding? what are your thought? thanks for any help. I watched your other videos on this topic, I dont think it is the starter motor or reduction gear as the bike will jump start. It will just die randomly while riding.

Hello. I believe as you suspect, charging system failure. I would put a volt meter on the battery post. Check the voltage while the motor is off. Then start it up and bring the revs just above idle and check again. The voltage should go up if the charging system is good. But if the voltage never goes up, but only slowly down then you will need to dig in and check the stator, voltage regulator, and maybe even wires. But its usually a stator or regulator.

@@UpAllNight91 Thank you. I confirmed last night with a volt meter that battery voltage is slowly going down while bike is running. Voltage was at 13.4v before running bike. After running the voltage slowly dropped to 12.9v before I hit the kill switch. Today I will remove ignition cover and inspect the stator/alternator.

Thanks brother! I would start with a new fuse all together. I know sounds crazy but I've seen it before. And also disconnect the 4 or 3 wire connection that connects to the starter relay and blow that out and reconnect. I would start there. If that doesn't do the trick let me know and we can dig further

Hmm if it was starting fine before the top end. The first thing I would do is remove the inspection cover to get access to where you turn the crank when setting cam timing and turn the motor at the crank with hand tools. Turn or spin the crank by hand two full turns to make sure you dont have something binding up like a valve making contact with the piston or such.

Anyone got a clue why my 2021 crf250r don't wanna start? I accidentally touched the positive from the battery on the metal frame with a screw driver and it sparked a bit then it just don't make noise when pushing the electric start at all like it's completely dead no power going thru, I laid a screw driver across both bolts on the solenoid then pressed the electric start button and still no power. I personally think I fried the whole black box where those fuses are but then I'm hoping it's the battery I fried

Oh bummer. The hondas dont like pressure washers for sure. If you can here the fuel pump when you press the starter button we can assume the start button is working. It could be a starter relay or a kill switch. I will try disconnecting the kill switch and try starting it as first step of trying to figure this out.

Doesn’t have a kickstart? I just bought a 125FB electric start doesn’t do anything but the kickstart fires it up right away. Also the kill switch still shuts it down so that tells me the current is flowing, just not from the start button. Any recommendations?

That could be a starter button, a starter relay, or just a bad starter motor itself. I would start by checking them 3 things at least. Then they sometimes have switches on the clutch lever that checks the clutch lever is pulled in before allowing the E start to work. Could be a bad switch up there too.

I have seen the little teeth on the gear the start connects to under the clutch cover strip out. I think that's what happen to yours. You might need to pull the clutch cover and inspect it

This can be kinda normal on some bikes. It doesnt always indicate a problem. As long as it does not stall when riding its probably ok and normal.

My buddy has a 2020 crf450r and it starts up and will ride but will die while riding and have a hard starting back up after it dies like the batteries dead. We swapped a new battery in and it started right up let the bike idle for about 5-10min to let it charge and it died 5min into a ride and wouldn’t start back up and drained the battery we loaded it back up took it home and I put the battery back in to see if it would start and it almost kicked over but instantly started loosing power and it just clicks now when I press the button. Could it be the starter or the little reduction gears on the inside of the clutch case?

Kinda sounds like the generator is not charging the battery. Based on a new battery started it but it only ran for a little bit. I would charge the battery, start her up. And then check the voltage at the battery terminals while its running. Hold the throttle open to raise the RPM's just above idle and check the voltage. If the charging system is working good it will read 13 volts or higher, If the charging system is bad it will read mid 12 volts and slowly be dropping in voltage.

got a 24 crf250r for next season and first ride out on it on a deep sand track the bike was running perfectly then put it on the stand after a 40 min moto and then went to go out again and it was completely dead on the button no noise or anything but ran perfectly 20 mins before, tried a bump start and nothing.

Thats could be so many things but I would start by checking battery as you have done. Stick your ear over the tank fill hole with cap removed hit the button, can you hear the pump for the split second? Also I do have about 3 videos up like this for this bike and if you catch all 3 you should have a good grasp on how to dig through yours and figure this out. But yeah check the tank when you hit the button. This lets us know if the start button, CDI, and stuff is good. Go from there...

I've got the same problem on a 22 CRF250R. Thought it was a bad battery. New battery didn't fix it. It's making the exact same noise starter relay clicks. I can put a jump box on the battery and it'll start every time, I can also jump a wire straight from a hot battery and it'll start. Could it be a bad starter and the relay just not sending enough power to turn it over? The jump box steps the amps up.

Hello. Yes it can be the starter. If the starter is putting too heavy of a load on the battery. A OEM battery is around 300 bucks. But on ebay they sell starters for the crf that are around 100 bucks. I installed on of them ebay starters on a friend's crf and so far so good

Another great and informative video. Question, on a different topic than this video, but electrical related. Have you ever seen a P0261 code "cylinder 1 injector open circuit." This is on a 2021 CRF250R. 30 hrs, and has a GET ECU that is providing the code. I cleared it, it has not come back and bike was and is running fine. The code and orange MIL light on the map switch came on after multiple short start/stop sequences with engine at the track. Could battery drain from the multiple starts in a short period of time result in low voltage and throw a random code? Is there a good way to electrically test the fuel injector to rule it out? Assuming continuity and some resistance value?

Hello. That codes means the injector is unplugged, or bad or bad wiring going to it. I have never seen that code pop up from a low battery. If its been running fine since and the code never returned I would probably say its ok. But it wouldnt hurt to check the connection at the injector and make sure its not dirty or loose or anything. If the code does ever return and the bike is still running fine then I would toss the stock ECU back in and check to see if the stock ECU also reports the same error code. As it could just a error on the part of the GET ECU. I have seen ECU's do some strange things. Ohh, also check the connection at the ECU, make sure its good and clean and fully inserted well.

Side note, your tip about "Shoe Goo" on areas where plastics rub on an aluminum frame is mint! Stuff holds up great and totally prevents the rubbing marks that can get pretty bad over time.

I also like using it on the bottom of my boots where the pegs dig in, surely extends the life of the boot. But it needs 72 hours to dry before riding again.

Hello. Could be a bad starter relay, a bad starter, or starter clutch, or reduction gear. Since the fuel pump can be heard, we know the start button is working. These can be a little tricky to figure out. But I do have 3 videos on the CRF450r starting and if you catch all 3 you should have a good general idea how to figure out which it is. You can youtube search 1:11 crf450r starting to find these 3. If you get hung up anywhere let me know.

I checked starter motor on short circuit,it does work. We replaced starter relay from crf 250 2023 (I hope those are the same) it clicks but won’t turn the engine but those clicks are very quiet.we checked kill switch,starter button,all is fine with it. We are running out of ideas

If so then this will tell us that the ECU, kill switch and all that is ok and we can go from there. I do have a idea whats going on but I would need to know this first.

We didn’t fire it up by short start. There is no spark at the spark plug. Is it the problem with CDI? Looks like there is no signal to starter relay and something blocks ignition. Maybe kill switch?

@@KarolKres Yes it can totally be the kill switch. Try unplugging the kill switch from the hardness and starting her up. If she starts with the kill switch disconnected then its the kill switch.

Can you tell me the name of the sensor that tells the computer that the engine is turning. I have a 2020 crf450r with a new starter, starter solenoid and starter relay. Still turns for about a 1/4 second before cutting out. If i jump the start solenoid while i hit the start button the bike will start. It all started with a dead battery while doing multiple starts while hot. Im guessing this is the issue. Thanks

@@elmo4225 Ahh yes sir! And the sensor that pays attention to that is the pick up sensor thats part of the stator. If you replaced the stator you have a new pickup. But yeah check the reduction gear for sure. If thats not it let me know, seen this before in a few 2020s

Hello, i got a kx250f from 2015, i recently put a new all balls fuel pump in the bike because it was starting bad, popping and cutted out, when i did this the bike was fixed because it runs good and keeps running, but the bike just doesnt want to start, it needs like almost 30 kicks and then it finally kicks on, i checked the valves and this was all in spec, got any ideas?

For sure. Was also going to say a plug. But also did you check to make sure the fuel pump holds pressure? Or does the pressure drop off really quickly when the power is killed going to it? On a kick start bike it surely helps them start better if the pump holds pressure between kicks. Its easy to bench test the fuel pump with a 12v battery. I should how to do that in the two videos where I replaced fuel pumps

And lastly if all that checks out well. Hows the compression feel? KX250f's have a aggressive auto decompression that bleeds off alot of pressure and makes them easy to kick however the down side is if the piston and rings are tired then sometimes there is just not enough compression left between the two to give a good quick start with a few kicks

Hi i have a 2020 crf250r. It came with a valve broke so ive done a complete top end rebuild, however when its cold it turnsfor ages before starting to fire and then starts. As soon as it starts for the 1st time i can turn it of amd itll start again straight away. Runs perfect other than this issue. Any ideas please?

Hello. next time its cold and you go to start it, try plugging the right side (rear brake side) exhaust pipe with your hand to completely block the exhaust flow while cranking. See if it fires up pretty quickly when its blocked. Let me know what that does.

@@daithimurphy1832 Ok. The auto decompression is on the right side exhaust valve and by blocking the right side exhaust pipe it allows it to build more cylinder pressure during cranking. I have seen these crf250r that are hard to start cold, come to life when the right exhaust is blocked. Have you rechecked the valve clearance? If the intake valves are too tight they will be hard to start cold, yet fire up easy once warm.

Could be many things. My friends recently did the same thing and it was the fuel pump. I would start by checking if its spark related, fuel related, or engine related. I have also seen spark plugs that even though they spark well during a spark test, they fail under compression. Try a new plug and check for spark. If spark is well. Try dropping about 2 ounces of gas down spark plug hole into the combustion chamber. Quickly install plug and try to fire her up. If she barks off for a second then its fuel related, check the fuel pump and such. If she still doesn't bark off then i would check compression.

If the starter is attempting to spin the motor, and you already replaced the starter reduction gear. The next thing to check would be the starter clutch.

@@UpAllNight91 the piston has 28,7 hours the bike also has plenty of compression I run gytr cylinder head and twin air powerfklow kit. the bike has plenty of compression. Coolant is at the top after each ride so I guess I’m not overheating.

@@bobileksen3496 I would get your hands on a GYTR tuner if you dont already have one. With this you can check for trouble codes, and also see live date. You could have a sensor out. I once worked on a YZ250f 2014 that was hard to start once hot and it turned out to be a bad barometric pressure sensor on the throttle body was bad and it had a trouble code listed for it when I checked.

Hmm. Aftee blowing fuses it will crank but not start. I would probably start by hitting the start but real fast and then listening for the fuel pump. Is the fuel pump turning on? And I would also pull the spark plug and see if she has spark. That way I know if I'm changing a no spark issue, or no fuel issue, or both no and no fuel

The spark plug was good but changed it out either way , it turned out to be something to do with the battery I think low voltage from trying to crank it up so many times , I think those lithium battery’s have a safety or something

Try jumping the starter wires ar the starter relay, sending power directly to the starter motor. Does it turn over the motor or no?

How do you jump them? Also a point to note - there is also a white relay box near the cdi which i believe is the starter solenoid? This is making some inconsistent clicking noises so have one on order. The problem began the other day.. the starter because intermittent and now isn’t starting at all, no starter motor wind whatsoever

Ok. So it started up and ran. The next step will be disconnecting the power wire off the starter and hooking a volt meter to it so see if the starter relay is or is not sending 12 volts to the starter when the start button is pressed.

Hey, sorry i commented on another video. But this video is what exactly my bike is also doing. Its a 2022 Honda CRF 450r. And it makes the same exact noise. I recently replaced the battery and starter about 2 weeks but after I was riding for a bit and turned the bike off it would not start again and would make this same exact noise. Any idea what it can be? Thank you a lot.

These can be the hardest to chase down because of the way they have a protection thing programmed into the ECU. But have you checked the battery voltage yet?

@@usaydpak2999 I understand it was just replaced but it will die quickly if its ran on a bike with a bad charging system. Do you have a volt meter to check its voltage?

@@usaydpak2999 Is that with it running or off? Do you know how to jump the starter solenoid to send power directly to the starter? Try that and see what happens

He took the bike home and was to put the cover on. I haven't run into him since so I'm not sure. I hope it fits with the tusk battery. Cause the oem battery is expensive!

Yeah it didnt fit well. I dont know how he was able to get the cover to fit when he got home but that was not the best fitting battery.

i also have a 23 450, it turns over, but i can not get it to start for the life of me. It has gas. Its brand new and i have no idea why the spark plug would already be out. Any ideas?

Have you put a new plug in her yet to see if that was the problem? These plugs on these modern 4 strokes can go out at any time, young or old. It usually happens from warming up too quickly.

@@UpAllNight91 I ordered a new plug I’ll find out today! One more question, does anyone know if it’s normal for these new bikes to get hot really fast? If I stand it and let it idle for 3 minutes, I can feel the heat coming on the engine from a few feet away. I feel like my Husqvarna never gets that hot. But maybe it’s normal for these newer Hondas?

@@06Canyon-i5g yes they get hot fast. Unlike a car that has a cooling fan, these race bike have no fan. You are to start them up, warm them up for a minute or two and ride them. If you come to a stop while riding you will want to shut it down. Otherwise they can overheat within juat a couple minutes

I have a 22 for 50 RX and both times I’ve use the kill switch to to kill it it’s failed to start again but after waiting a while it starts I’ve stalled it and then I was able to restart it but this is happened twice now and I don’t know it’s cranking over but not starting

Does honda reimburse the customer for parts and your labor? 2023 should be warranty work right?

You would think, but because they are race bikes there is no warranty implied or written. I have seen times where the customer has pressed the issue and they took the bike in for repair, but its usually stuff that results in a recall down the road. Not to mention it usually takes the shop 2 months to get it done lol.

My 22 CRF250R has a good battery and I’m getting power to the starter solenoid And has no blown fuses but when I hit the start button I don’t hear any fuel pump or clicking. It has 31hrs on it and I ride every weekend and pressure wash clean filter etc. motor not locked either.

I would check your starter button. They do go bad. I would start with that. Next check to see if it is relaying power to the starter solenoid when the button is pressed. Also have you tried either push starting her or jumping the starter relay to at least make sure it will run? Make sure its not like a dead CDI PCM or the following... check the terminal with 4 wires at the starter relay. Too many times I have seen them get dirty and cause it just not to start. Unplug that and clean it all out, and reconnect. Thats kinda common if the bike is pressure washed

@@UpAllNight91 also when jumping the starter relay switch I was able to get the engine to constantly spin over to no avail. Also didn't hear the fuel pump turn on but I'm second guessing myself alot on this bc I mostly work on heavy equipment and the start switch sending a ground threw me off

@@raymyers23 one time I seen a honda that was doing what yours is doing it was the 4 wire terminal at the starter relay, corrosion. Another time it was corrosion at the fuse connection on the starter relay.

@@UpAllNight91 mine ended up being the starter relay solenoid 10 amp fuse didn't look blown I pulled it out and was checking continuity and it didn't have continuity going from one side to the other so I swapped it with the spare fuse cleaned out the plug reconnected it and it fired right up.. I will note that having electrical problems on your bike is a very very good way to learn what everything is.

Oops,unscrewing the Cap to get to theCrank to Spin it is Not the Fastest way to see if your Motor is Locked !!….putting the Bike in Gear & Spinning the Rear Wheel is !🧐🤣…Plus…that’s a 4 stroke for ya🤑

May be quicker but lacks feel. When I spin the motor by hand at the crank I can also feel it, which can tell me alot

@@UpAllNight91 it keeps shutting off in the air like I’ll give it a rev to bring the front up and it just goes clunk and dies maybe only 2 times but 2 too many times for me, great bike to practice corners on and hit the sand track on but for real Jumps I think I’ll stick to a yami

@@Ccrider363 oh man, yeah thats not cool at all. I had a yz450 2015 that would sometimes shut off if I hit the face with no throttle and went air borne just right. I turned the idle up some and it cured that. On the hondas its often the overly aggressive auto decompression kicking in when they die just as you open up the throttle. Would have thought they would have addressed that by now but I also think they like it like that because it keep people from riding way to low in the RPMs. Riding too low is harder on crankshaft rod bearing, kinda like peddling a bike in high gear

2022 CRF250RX bike will crank but sounds like no fire, kill switch will not flash blue only orange (red).

Hmm, can't say I've run into that one so I don't know off hand what that means. But since its cranking I would check for spark. If she's got spark then try dropping a couple ounces of oil in the spark plug hole and put plug back in. See if she will bark off when trying to start. That may help lead you toward your problem.
