When you ment someone has been inside the engine and not all mechanics are good mechanics, think you are talking about me LOL!! Being a Life long Rider at age 57 and having 3 adult sons who have ridden since they were 5 we have purchased lots of bikes some good some not so good. I usually can tell in a couple of minutes by talking to the owner if I'm going to buy it or not.We did buy a 05 KX125 with bad crank seals and the owner said he thought it had some carburator trouble.Feel like he was honest just did'nt know.We got in it for $1500 and after a full rebuild on the engine and a complete frame off build turned out to be great bike.Was good expierence for me and my son doing the frame off replacing all bearings and seals,sent cylinder off for new nika-seal coating,powder coated the frame ,new plastics,tires and some other goodies. Still have it, runs amazing and has been a great bike for us.

LoL, Thats good times! I too can usually tell within a few minutes too and a quick glance at the bike. Thats a good story on the KX125 and cool its still around. Good stuff. I do know when people sell a bike not running sometimes they really dont know and are guessing whats wrong with it, I probably should have mentioned that but thats surely true and I go into the deal with that in mind and its all on me since I'm the one planning on fixing it. 👍

I guessed higher on all the bikes that weren't yours because I think it's a good idea over estimate the hours rather than underestimate on any used bike and I guessed lower on your bike with 300 hours because they are so well maintained and didn't look like it had more than 150 hours. Great video, lots of good information.

Sick vid boss. I got a pretty good deal on a yz250f the other day, only downside is the oil drain plug threads are completely gone. Planning on doing timesert… any recommendations on best way to keep shavings out of the motor? I’ve heard compressed air through fill cap and super grease the tap. Whatcha think?? Timesert best fix?
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
Hello. I honesty don't have any experience repairing threads for the drain bolts on dirt bikes. On my own bikes I have never stripped them, and on customers bikes if its stripped out I usually only suggest replacing the case. I usually suggest that route because it seems most drain bolt thread repairs leaves the bike with a slight oil leak, and or it doesn't hold and last long. But I do like the compressed air idea to push the shavings out.

I have a 2023 rmz450 and I was wondering how many hours should I go before I do a top end? and also how many hours before a bottom end ?
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
Hello. 100 hours for a 450 is good and safe for most. If the rider is very fast or works the motor very hard than that can be shortened to 60 hours. I would suggest a new timing chain too at the same time. The crank can live well over 200 hours if not riden hard and taken care of, however if its being used for track use with big jumps then 200 hours is good for a crankshaft to keep the bike good and safe

@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын

@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
@@user-wd2xj5gm6c Ok. Sometimes it doesnt take much coolant in the oil to make a milky mess but to be safe maybe drain the oil and get it all cleaned out. It can take a few oil changes to get all the milky stuff out so just use cheap oil for the flushing. Then see if it becomes milky again. Sometimes water can get in the motor through the vent hose if the bike was riden through creeks and water holes, so that could be all it is. But if it keeps happening then surely just replace the water pump impellar seal.

I bought a 2023 YZ250FX in December. I got it used, guy said he rode it once around the house. Hooked into the ECU .01 hours, and it looked like it. 7600$. Bought my 2019 YZ250 for 6k last year 1.2 hours on the meter. Both of these bikes had stock tires with all the nipples, even on the middle knobs of the rear tires. These deals are out there. I will not buy a used bike with more than 5 hours on it again. Been there done that.

I agree with most of what you explained but why not ask the seller to do compression test or test it yourself when inspecting the bike? It just saved me from buying a warn out banshee and the seller didn't even realize the compression was low, true or not. I could hear it while it was running in the video he shared and noticed the bike was smoking more than normal... I respectfully explained I was not looking for a bike I was going to have to rebuild right after purchasing it and he understood. He said he planned on rebuilding the top end and relisting the bike. If I didn't ask him to test it or did the compression test myself l would have screwed myself over. So I highly disagree with not doing a compression test while purchasing a used 2 stroke. That tells you a lot about what condition the top end is in.
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
Even a banshee, the compression can be felt at the kicker lever with your hand. When doing a compression test on a 2 stroke, how fast its kicked can very the reading significantly. I can get about 150 pounds on a 250 smoker with my foot, the next guy might only get 120, and if I put a drill on the stator nut and spin the motor quickly it will read 220. So I feel its pretty pointless when a quick feel at the lever with my hand tells me all I need to know. This is why I suggest being familiar with what your buying. This video was primarily for track riders on track bikes. On a track bike I expect a top end to be done right off the rip anyway. The main thing is, is the bike truly a low how bike or is it a high hour bike. I would rather buy a low hour bike with low compression than a high hour bike with great compression. Personally. Because I will be doing a top end right away anyway. I can bring compression back, but I cant lower the bikes overall hours.
@Shreddylife
@Shreddylife 2 ай бұрын
@@UpAllNight91 I get that but compression still gives you a good idea on when it's time to do a rebuild imo. That's why you test it multiple times and take the average psi from kicking it over like you normally would. This has been a rule of thumb for me for years and it's never failed me while buying a used bike. Which I have bought many and have raced many used bikes while growing up. We never had the luxury of going to the dealership and buying brand new bikes when I race lol
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
Exact compression can vary depending on how fast it is kicked. The biggest threat isn't low compression, its breaking a piston. A piston ran too long can still have great compression right before it gives up and breaks. For this reason I suggest doing a top end right away even if the compression is good. I'm not so much worried about the rings, I'm more worried about the piston.
@Shreddylife
@Shreddylife 2 ай бұрын
@@UpAllNight91 That's why you kick it over at the same pace and get an idea where the compression is at lol I agree with tossing in a new piston if you buy a used bike if you want peace of mind but I have purchased plenty of used bikes and ran the them for a lot of hours and never had a piston just break out of no where. Have you?
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 ай бұрын
In my early days, oh yeah broke pistons. Today no, I do a top end right away. I do repair a lot of customers bikes with broken pistons though. I have one here right now actually. Kx112. 50 hours on the stock piston, it gave up and is stuck in the crank

Rule number 1 : don’t buy a used bike 😅 People do not sell bikes when working well. They either get sold not working because they’ve fucked it , or if they do they get rebuilt just for selling it,buy a cheaper new bike , buncha shot boxes People always say you should worry about this or should know that, not true. Just change oil regularly and look after it and you won’t have a problem , only risky if you’re driving miles from home with no van etc

Excellent advice to follow. It's tough nowadays buying a quality used bike with the amount of flippers on the market. Myself I've been lucky enough to have over a 20yr friendship with my local dealer. There has been many times when someone's bought a bike and traded it in with virtually no hours on it because it was to much for them or not to their liking and my dealer would let me know about it and give me a great deal on it knowing that I'm a repeat customer. On another note Beavis has now got a big head after having a video about him 😂 and is strutting into the shop like, look at me I want more screen time and I'm willing to get it by any means. Watch your ankles if I don't get it. Again great video. 🏜👍
