I meet up with the Stoney Ridge Farmer for a full ram pump install. Josh and I install the pump and we show how we go about starting the ram pump from a pond to take water up the hill for his cows. The hydraulic ram pump uses water falling by gravity to activate a waste valve and this makes a water hammer. The water hammer sends a pressure wave into a second valve and an accumulator tank. Once pressure is built in the pressure tank water is sent up the hill and into the water trough.

Why not run a return line from the tank to the pond to avoid using the float valve and prevent stagnation of the water when livestock moved to other locations?

for the inlet that sit's in the pond; use an anchor to keep the inlet end just under the water enough that no air is suck in. if need be a float can be used to keep the inlet pipe in position. by using the anchor and float together it will keep the inlet in under the top of the water , yet off the bottom also.. this will help keep the inlet running longer wit out stoppage. good luck..

@@LandtoHouse Freezing is also a big issue. This summer was the first year for me using a ram pump in the mountains of Colorado. In September, I removed both ram pumps from the stream, disconnected the supply / drive pipes and disconnected 1500 feet of delivery pipe (so far the delivery pipe just laid on the ground). Next year, I'm planning on running the delivery pipe along a fence for part, bury part and may have some left above. Hoping I can drain the water out of most of the delivery and leave next year. Pumps, supply and drive pipes may still have to come out because of freezing and spring high water (I guess we still have this - climate change and all) considerations. Note to self - get more backup O rings.

For freezing conditions... Or even "normal operation" I'd say remove the float valve. Run an "overflow" line back to the pond. Moving water won't freeze nearly as easily as still water.

You can siphon water out of a pond but keep in mind the pump runs 24/7 and can drain a pond rather quickly.

The ram pump will use a lot of water. This pond has a creek going to it to replenish the water used by the pump.

You could probably improve it by having an elbow just above the float valve, and then the water wouldn't have to get lifted to that extra unnecessary height before getting to the trough. It may then be easier to shield it there also, with a piece of metal off the fence post, to make it cattle proof.

Sorry, I didn't see your post before I mentioned the idea in mine. I think that doubling the lift height might halve the water volume, but I'm not sure and not sure what change there is to the water pressure. Any ideas?

The debris catchment would be more maintenance free if you use a tee and then made a huge loop coming back into the tee, this way you greatly increase the filter median sq. footage. You probably won't have to clean but once every 5 years then.

Question: Is it possible to redirect the waste valves water without affecting the functionality of the pump? Obviously for a stream source you are not really "worrying" about the source going dry (aside from droughts and odd nature/weather problems), so maximizing everything running off the waste valve isn't really a concern especially when running in a creek bed. Say I were to collect rain even on the roof of my house and I have a steep incline in my back yard that flattens out where I have a garden on and want to run that water to my garden without carrying buckets of water that I am just siphoning out of collection barrels at the base of the incline. The flat of the incline is higher than the storage tanks so I know I cant siphon out to the top of the hill because of the laws of thermodynamics/gravity. I could use a ram pump to push the water up the incline to a secondary holding tank or soaker hoses but I am loosing water at the waste valve and i don't need to water one spot of my lawn. If i could redirect that waste waste into even a smaller collection bin to reduce the "waste" seems like it would be resourcefully responsible. so if you can redirect the waste valve water run off, how high would you be able to push that? My thought says since it is a 1 way valve and cant be reintroduced into the drive/supply line, it will continue to open like normal until the pressure off the waste gate equals the pressue/level coming in from the drive line. has anyone played around with this idea at all?

Can't do it unfortunately at least not with a ram pump, you need to harness the flow of water in order to make a ram pump work from a pond you'll need a motorized pump

Is there a spot on your property lower than the lake? Get a siphon down to a lower spot and that draining might provide you enough to get a pump going.

The water supply I want to pump from is over two meters in depth why would I need to Inlet pipe lower if I can set my pump up at a depth of two meters under the water. My water depth is always at this two-meter depth. I'm hoping you'll answer this question.

Sadly no this does not work. There is no flow in a pipe that is sunk in the water. Like placing a straw in a glass of water. The water does not continually flow.

Can I use a 100 gallon Stock Tank as my "Source" of water? I want to create a constant supply of flowing water to a Bird Bath in our yard. Water can be returned to the stock tank through a filtered Drain at the bottom of the Bird Bath!..

You can use a storage tank as the water source. You will have issues with running out of water very fast. Lets say you have a 275 gallon ibc tote. Using a 1/2" ram pump that uses 2gpm you will be out of water in 2.3 hours. The water that will be pumped is only around 30 gallons from that tank. the rest of the water will have left the waste valve on the ground.

****Question for Seth***** I watched many of your videos and was impressed on your presentations. “Clear, simple and to the point. “ Where I camp is always in secluded areas but always by water. One spot has a fast flowing stream and I would like to run by you an idea, I have to see if it would work. Instead of using a long input line to the pump to develop head pressure, since the stream is fast moving; how about using a 6 inch diameter pipe approximately a foot long as the lead in pipe to the pump reducing it down to the normal input size. The pressure at the 6-inch side will increase in the smaller entry to the pump creating a greater head pressure. If I am right, the flow rate will remain the same but the pressure will increase, thus acting like a long lead in line. Bill

The pump will run as long as it has a fresh water supply. The issue might arise if the float valve re opens and too much water is expelled at once. It might cause a back pressure loss issue. It's possible there was enough lift height that there is no problem. The ram pump will only build a certain amount of pressure based on the input head pressure

Be careful about putting rocks on your drive line. The the recoil from the ram pump will eventually wear holes in the line.

I had already built a siphon setup just as you described so I'm glad to see that you suggested it here and I'm hoping that it will increase the efficiency. @BL8 the it has buoyancy it will float on top of the water then close. Similarly to a cup catbrator when the catbrator fills the bowl the disk rises and slows/ stops flow.

That is its official name. Plumbers tape is metal and used to hold up pipe for sewer lines. Pipe tape is teflon in a small roll to help thread pipes together.

Thank you - great video! I learned a lot and as usual I have questions. I've also linked to this video from the discussion about about this installation in the Water Powered Pumps Facebook group: facebook.com/groups/240458583255303/permalink/698550144112809/ I believe that Land To House has four sizes of pumps available - 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch and 1 1/4 inch drive pipes. Have you found that there is a relative proportion for the the volume of water pumped for each size pump that holds constant with different heads and lift situations with enough water available? (1 inch drive pumps deliver 1/3 more than a 3/4 inch or something like that?). The water pumped may be totally adequate as installed in the video - if so, task done and back to "feeding the cows". If more water would be helpful, I did notice a couple of fairly easy items might increase the flow: (1) The delivery pipe to the tank went higher than necessary to the tank. At first I thought the delivery pipe was going to be run along the top of the fence, but saw that it dropped to the bottom which is what I'm planning (out of the way). An elbow at the float would allow the delivery pipe to come into the tank float valve with less lift. I'm not sure, but the rule might be double the lift height gives half the volume of water pumped - or perhaps less. (2) I paid attention to the use of poly pipe for the drive pipe and this was discussed in the video. I currently use 10 foot sections of PVC pipe with rocks on top for the drive and supply pipe (to a stand pipe - bucket approach discussed in video). However, I do use poly pipe for my 3/4 inch delivery pipe and I need all the volume and pressure I can get - so I made outside connections for the 3/4 inch delivery pipe using 3/4 inch threaded PVC connections and 3 turns of black electrical tape around the ends of the poly pipe (inside the PVC connections). In my low pressure situation, I'm not sure the outside connections are necessary, but do feel in a separate gravity feed approach that the inside connections of garden hoses strangled the volume of water output. Filtering is a big deal - need it to work, takes effort create and repetitive work to clean. Noticed that you used the fiberglass screen material - I've tried both aluminum and fiberglass - I like working with the fiberglass better. I sewed a sock with the screen and dental floss. The wrapping method shown is definitely faster - not sure I want the multiple layer wraps or from a ease of cleaning standpoint. Delivery use may dictate - how good does the filtering need to be. As you demonstrated, we need to keep the filter in place in the pond. I was going to use an anchor rock with a float - your approach with a float on a pole might be easier for maintenance and to find the filter. My plan if I walk into our pond is to have a rope on me and a vehicle and hope a helper can pull me out of the deep mud. I laughed at starting the siphon in the video. I had a horrible time getting a gravity fed siphon to start with 3/4 inch pipe out of a pond bank because of the air lock. And like the video, I really didn't like inhaling the pond water. The siphon to an intermediate bucket was mentioned (think this functions as a stand pipe). My ram installation is different so results may vary, but I found a 70 percent increase in water pumped by putting a stand pipe after 50 feet of 2 inch delivery pipe giving 20 inches of head and then only 20 feet of 1 1/4 inch drive pipe to gain another 10 inches of head to the pump (total 30 inches of head). I was unwilling to run 70 feet of 1 1/4 inch steel drive pipe and went with PVC. However, with the supply being 50 feet of 10 foot sections of PVC, I may switch the 50 foot supply to 50 feet of 2 inch continuous poly similar to what you used, continue with PVC for the 20 foot drive or consider steel for just the 20 feet. I think I can make the connections at the ends of the 2 inch 50 foot poly supply pipe with 2 inch threaded PVC connectors like I did with the 3/4 inch poly, but I may have to pre-cut the threads with a steel threaded connector. The point being - I like the ease that you put in your drive pipe with the poly and you did not have to deal with a lot of connections between 10 foot sections.
