I would argue that on a real loco there is A LOT of smoke on start up due to it containing mostly unburned fuel, so I would let it smoke heavily at startup. Just my 2 cents. Such an awesome model! I would love to think up a way to make the smoke grey.

Problem is that any material burning from an element will smoke white. The only trick is to make it more see- through and less dense. And then keep the bloody fluid less viscous that it does not gung up elements and wigs. Quite an art….

Are you using the ESU smoke generator or the USA Trains smoke generator? Also, take a look at the TDA8932 35W Mono Digital Amplifier. I put these audio amps in my locos and they can be heard clearly from the far side of my yard. Cheers!😀

ESU XL5 with an USATrains SD70 smoker. That I remove the rope wig from and use a bed of cotton bacon. The smoke files I program into the sound file via a lokprogrammer.
