When using the the chain stitch do leave the machine in m and length 3

Can you serge with a quilt 'sandwich' top, batting and bottom fabric?

Do you go through a lot more thread? This would be more expensive than a regular stitch, yes?

Just wondering if there is any reason to use a serger instead of a regular machine when one has the option to use either...

I'm guessing one reason would be that you'd never run out of bobbin thread. Other than that, I can't think of any other reason.

I agree you just want to join the pieces and the edges will be inside the quilt so why use up all that thread ?
