I really do think Disney have the smartest marketing team imaginable - just make the main character a different ethnicity, change literally nothing else, and just release all the promotional material. They don't need to do the defending - all they need is a bunch of chronically online twitter users to defend the movie for them while also villainizing everyone else for having genuine criticism of the film.

Me as well. I got over it early on when I found out that they had plans for putting much of the third movie in the real world (Who wants to watch a Tron movie set in the real world?) But looking at it from a 2022 perspective, the third movie would have been an abomination. They probably would have had Olivia Wilde direct, she would have turned her own character from a simple computer holocaust survivor into another superpowered unbeatable never wrong morally perfect Disney female lead cookie cutter repeat of Rey, Captain Marvel, etc.

This movie is such an insult. When I was a little girl, I fucking loved The Little Mermaid. Ariel was my favorite princess and I even learned how to swim so I could be like a mermaid. I didn't need Ariel to be brown like me. I connected with her even though she's a pale, red-headed, mermaid and I was a brown, dark-haired human child. You know why? Because The Little Mermaid is a well-written story. Ariel doesn't have to look like or embody every attribute of whoever is watching the movie, she just has to be a well-written and somewhat relatable character. I was a curious child that liked collecting useless things, so I related with Ariel who was curious about the human world and collected human items despite not knowing what they are. I had issues communicating with people and sometimes couldn't find the words to express how I felt, so I also related with Ariel when she lost her voice and couldn't communicate properly. There are also plenty of things that I couldn't relate to Ariel with, but that's the point. Characters don't HAVE to be pure reflections of the audience, they just have to be intriguing and well-written. Sorry for the rant. This shit makes me so mad.

I’ll put you into how important Ariel is for red head and ginger girls. We get picked on for or skin and hair color. We are told we have no souls. In adult hood I’ve notice guys just want to screw me for my red hair cause of the stereotype in the bed room. Ariel was hope for me growing up. Now I don’t have a Disney princess who does look like me.it means I’m easily replaced by a black person. Black might be called a minority but you aren’t. Red heads are. Red heads have been tortured for centuries. They are literally say red head and black people are the same in a way. We are “replaceable” and easy. I would love if they did African stories instead of ripping off Caucasian stories (yes, princess and the frog is based off a German story).

@@zerotodona1495 I absolutely agree! It's perhaps even within Ariel as redhead this little prejudice with portraying bewitching and magical characters as redhead, such as a mermaid. But nevertheless, somehow then on point... That's probably the reason why there is less likely a redhead Cindrella or Rapunzel, and rather only use redheads for supernatural characters, such as also in Marvel or DC. But what sucks the most is that the Liveaction movis indeed only featured so far redheads only for the evil stepmother, one stepsister and the evil Grand Duke in Cinderella. But black people were in comparison (also in comparison with other ethnic minorities) always present as "goodies", but never as "evil characters". The Blue Fairy, Lady's owner, some characters in Beauty and the Beast, the Nutcracker and Uncle Drosselmeyer.....it's also of course interesting that also in The little Mermaid Ursula is portrayed by a white actress, and also Ariel's mother is portrayed by a black actress and renamed. In my opinion, Halle Bailey's mermaid character should be rather renamed. Recreating everything but the main character is such stupid thing. Rather like in Cinderella, then bette create something new. I will defintely not connect Halle Bailey with the one and only Ariel. There had been blonde and Asians little mermaids so far and so why not a black one someday. But Halle can't pretend to be Ariel - still with dyed hair it's rather all only a fake. I will rather enjoy watching Disenchanted with Giselle portrayed by Amy Adams...

When Disney remade Aladin, The Lion King, and Mulan, they told everyone that the characters will reflect the story, location and authors integrity by using characters and actors that would be true to the original. It’s a race to the bottom. It kinda can work if one film does it but not if every film does it. 1. Make a poor-quality movie to make some quick cash. 2. Stunt cast some BIPOC/female/LGBTQIA2S+. 3. Market it saying anyone who doesn’t like it is an -ist or -phobe. 4. Get good reviews because no reviewer wants to be labeled as one of the above. But in the long run it destroys and divides the fan base and it is happening so often that the pattern is clear. In my opinion, H-Man is one of the worst because it was a small fan base to begin with and so clear in its bait and switch. Then it was denied for a year before it came out until it was plain to see. It might have started as a real intent to broaden the fan base to no-fans (I think ca female-led Star Wars trilogy was truly to do that and not because they thought it would be bad). But now it is clear that they are intimidating critics to give good reviews or be seen as bigots.

Fanbaiting may be part of it, but its not the whole story. These films are propagandistic in nature. This new type of Hollywood film is meant to humiliate and demoralize people of European descent. Its not an accident that its always tradition European stories being bastardised. The people that make these kinds of media hate traditional European culture and its adherence. Fanbaiting is simply a moneymaking ploy disguising the underlying project.

You can't have a long standing character/s who've existed for as long, or longer than most of us have been alive, and then make massive changes to them or their story and not think people aren't going to look at you funny. I was just over at Midnights Edge listening to their take on Fanbait and how its a playbook for studios now. What concerned me is how recently they have been shifting their argument. It used to be very heavily arguing that Hollywood is woke and forcing diversity where it shouldn't be, however in that video they were backing off it, saying that actually it ISN'T that people dislike POC or women in roles originally meant for men or white characters, but rather the majority hate that the production, whatever it might be, is just badly made. I do not agree with this and the new Little Mermaid seems to back me up. People are sick of characters, established characters, famous character with loyal fans being race swapped or gender swapped. They don't want a black mermaid, they don't want black dwarves or elves, they don't want a female empowerment Ghostbusters 2016, they don't want a black Johnny Storm in Fant4stic. This isn't racism at all and it baffles me how people go through mental gymnastics to make it appear it is. The same people who will argue to the death over why there shouldn't be black dwarves and elves in Tolkien's lore will happily watch shows or movies with black leads that aren't agenda driven or are new, or simply abide by existing lore and canon.

Disagree. I really don't care if they race swap a character as long as the race isn't a plot point (before or after.) Mind, I can certainly see the point of those who want the characters they're familiar with to be recreated in the new medium as faithfully as possible. It's just never going to be anything like a dealbreaker for me. The _Rings of Power_ approach is just dumb. They have this whole civilization full of apparently white elves... and then there's this one elf that looks nothing like them except for the pointy ears. He raises so many questions, even if we didn't have the works it was supposedly based on, that the show has no intention of acknowledging, much less answering, and asking those questions yourself gets you labelled a bigot.

Black mermaid: exists Random people on the internet: "WOKE! WOKE! WOKE! BUZZWORD! GLOBALISTS! WOKE! CANCEL CULTURE! WOKE! SNOWFLAKES! WOKE WOKE WOKE!" Bruh it is quite literally just The Little Mermaid but the actor is black, why does it matter? I feel like there's an alternate universe where they kept Ariel white and all of you in the comments are like "good movie, nostalgic, I love it!" but here all the comments are about how the movie is going to flop. Why? Because the actor is black? Because you all believe that there's a grand conspiracy where "the globalist new world order is trying to indoctrinate children into thinking black people can also be magical mermaids"? I guess I really just don't see how the skin color on an actor immediately causes an entire film to be bad. IMO, If anyone ever uses the term "woke" as a legitimate part of their argument, that argument should be instantly thrown in the garbage, your argument should be able to stand entirely on its own without the use of right-wing buzzwords

They deliberately make a point to disguise her appearance until the last shot, rather than just rolling with it, and showing her in the company of other characters. They're deliberately signaling that the important takeaway is that she's not white, not that there's something special about this film. They just want to make a point of drawing attention to race, so they're getting exactly the response they deserve.

Myself, as a singer, my biggest problem with the little mermaid trailer had nothing to do with the lady's skin colour, but with her interpretation of the song. Jody Benson; real Ariel, sings "If I could be", in a whisper, sounding plaintive, , almost as if she is about to break into tears. You really get the sense that this is someone longing to be somewhere other than she is. This lady sings "If I could be!" with a huge grate scatty soul crescendo! All I get that she's wishing, is to show off.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. It reminds me of _The Lion King_ when Beyoncé was belting and slurring all over "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" which is supposed to be a romantic **duet** and reunion. Halle Bailey can definitely sing, but musicals require so much more than just plain vocal talent.
@radmanrize

This is something that Adam from YourMovieSucks also brought up in his review of The Lion King 2019 and it pissed me off to no end. In the original when Jason Weaver sings "I Juust. Caan't. Waait. To be kiiing." you can hear the excitement in his voice. He's acting with his singing. Whereas in the remake when JD McCrary sings "I juUust can't waAAaait to be kiiIIiIiiing" he's just an R&B singer showing off his glissando like he was singing the national anthem at the Superbowl. The sad thing is it's not even really JD's fault. It's the director Jon Favreau's fault for not giving a shit and knowing nothing about voice directing and/or musical theater.

But it works so well because we live in a r-word society. A flat movie would be ignored. People just wouldn't watch it. And Aladdin was also a very flat remake which People actually liked it probably because they never understood what made the original so great The movie is being disliked by r word people. That is just the plain facts and ignoring that and saying people are disliking for smart and sophisticated reasons is just kidding yourself
@yammoto148
@yammoto148 Жыл бұрын
@@siriusradheoff8361 The only reason people liked the Aladdin remake was because the part they thought they were gonna hate which was Will Smith was in fact the best part of the film and the characters who played Jasmine and Aladdin were pretty bland and boring, Jaffar was forgettable and the whole story just wasn't worth it in the slightest. But the Genie the one part that people adored to hell and back about the original was the one thing Disney bothered with making good. So people disliking the new little mermaid movie, are disliking it because what they liked about the original which was this curious and flawed character named Ariel, is getting changed for no reason other than to generate the same level of backlash and clout. Which is shallow as hell, also the little mermaid was written by a Dane, surely this is cultural appropriation in some form?

You, like the typical racist consumer, invalidate any merit Halle Bailey has by chalking her casting up to just her race. Because of people like you, black people no longer only struggle to succeed, but now when they do, their success is assumed to be only because of their race. Halle Bailey is a spectacular talent and she will be amazing in the role. I have no doubt that this movie will be swept under the rug regardless.

Exacty but do you actually think it would get as much publicity as it's getting now if they went with that route? No. What you're not realizing here is that there isn't any "problem". Companies make decisions consciously, do you genuinely think they didn't expect this to happen when they changed the color of a well known character? They knew people would fight over it, when are ya'll gonna realize? Edit: Oh and anyone that's reading this comment and is already typing "Oh, so you think the only reason a company would change the color of a character is because it's profitable? That sounds pretty racist on your part", Go ahead and send it. I bet Disney's laughing their asses off while you're at it.
