Zoe, I find this topic pretty interesting. I've tried intermittent fasting for a week (16:8) and I didn't suffer at all, but what if I want to drink a beer with friends at 11 PM? Do I have to eat at 5PM next day?

Intermittent fasting has been around for thousands of years in multiple cultures including that of Buddhism and Muslim people, usually tied to religious practices and holidays! It's only recently been known as 'intermittent fasting' after being adopted by weight loss/health/fitness communities, but it's been around for a very long time.

Very well informed video. I would like to add that don't start fast for 16 hrs in the first place start from 10-11 hrs of fasting. This will help your body to adapt and then you can gradually increase the fasting window.

I no longer do intermittent fasting but it really helped me during a period where my hunger cues were out of control. I was trying to listen to my body but I knew I was eating way too much for my activity level at the time. I softly eased my way into intermittent fasting by doing a 10:14 window for a week, then 14:10 another week, and then 16:8 for a few months. I eventually eased off it and now eat whenever I'm hungry. I still normally don't eat super early because I'm not hungry, but if i start to feel hungry around 10 or 11, I'll eat a light snack (mainly because I'm at work and can't eat a full meal yet). If I don't feel hungry until 12.30 or 1, then that's alright too.

a few generations ago in india (perhaps my grandparents' grandparents' gen), they used to eat two full meals in the day without any snacks but had a lot of tea in the day. with time somehow that got translated to 3 meals a day along with snacks in the evening along with tea/coffee (this is what most indian families follow today). so when i told my family the concept of imf a few years back they were completely supportive because they assumed I'm trying to follow the path of my ancestors XD

This works for me. I was motivated by my science teacher's words: 'If you haven't eaten in a while, your body uses up all the stored fat in order to give you energy" which means, you would be losing fat!! Also, this is completely unrelated, but for anyone trying a workout on youtube, NEVER watch it before starting and DONT think too much about it before starting. This, from my own personal experience, can cause a loss of motivation.

I did intermittent fasting for about 2 years, but had to stop around 6 months ago because of changes in my schedule as a result of exams at school. I have still managed to maintain the results that I obtained through intermittent fasting tho and did not have any yo-yo effect whatsoever. Most people intermittent fast to lose weight. The reason that some of those people experience this effect is because they viewed intermittent fasting as a diet. So ofc once they've reached their desired weight, they feel like they no longer require to be on this "diet" and stop intermittent fasting and begin to eat a lot more of food in general than they would have before beginning their fasting as well as a lot more foods that they would have restricted themselves from eating when on this "diet", such as junk foods. That's usually the reason behind them having the yo-yo effect. I'm sure it varies person to person, but at least for me and the other people I've spoken to who have also done intermittent fasting, so long as you do not significantly increase your consumption of calories and continue to eat and drink healthily you will not have this effect. I hope that made sense. Intermittent fasting genuinely transformed my life and my body so I definitely think you should give it a go! Even if you experience the yo-yo effect, at the end of the day you can always lose that weight again. I think I'd prefer taking that risk and giving it a try anyway
@fer-el4ux
@fer-el4ux 3 жыл бұрын
You usually gain a lot of weight when u stop fasting only if you start eating a bunch of junk food, don’t control your portions, binge, etc. other than that people who do this usually manage to keep the weight off that they lost.

She said “intermittent fasting wasn’t there for long”. Well it has been there always, as Muslims do intermittent fasting for 1 month during their month of Ramadhan where they fast for 16-17 hours and have an eating window of 6 -7 hours. They call it a blessing month and all this is for their religious purpose. So yeah intermittent fasting is a concept that was always there among a community.

Whoa isnt the eating window really short though? Maybe you should start 14: 10 or 16:8. Giving yourself 4 hours to eat is really restrictive. Instead of cutting down to just one meal which may not satisfy your mind eating two full meals will and you are more likely to stay consistent and continue IF. Please dont look for quick results. That makes staying consistent harder when you dont see results quickly. You didnt gain the weight you have in a week or month but slowly over time, years maybe so similarly it will take time to lose weight. And like zoe said IF isn't equal to losing weight. But it helps in your weight loss journey
@peachyjumpy
@peachyjumpy 3 жыл бұрын
@@aorchiesiddiqui8434 I never eat breakfast, and because of the pandemic I eated in a 5 hour window for 7 months last year. After a couple weeks I wasn't hungry anymore. Lost 5 pounds. Didn't knew anything about IF. New job means I didn't had to eat like that anymore. But this year losing weight and being healthy became my number one priority. I started eating as healthy as I could but there wasn't any weightloss (basically eatin a healthy version of keto). So I recall my accidental IF from last year and think that I could do it again to see if it helps me, knowing that I can deal with it. I lost 1 pound last week with OMAD, no side effects, so I think I'm on the right path. **NOTE: I did a research and gradually changed my diet for the last 4 months to actually do this. Watching and reading Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Sten Ekberg and Dr. Jason Fung really helped me.

This is so weird, in my country (Romania) we either have a huge healthy breakfast if you have a lot of physical activities to do in between 6 am and 3pm and then have smaller lunches and dinners OR if you have an office life like, we skip breakfast and have black coffee, no sugar, have a small soup and salad (humous bites if you want) for lunch and a bigger but healthy dinner at 6 (always accompanied by a side of salad)! So when me, my mom and grandma found about this intermittent fasting were surprised because it's kind of a consistent lifestyle. But then....I moved in UK where after a few years I realised I broke the lifestyle I had back in Romania and I was ALWAYS snacking and eating less for main meals due guilt, but did not realise. A few months ago I was able to slowly revert to my older lifestyle and because I am a HUGE foodie, I don't feel guilty eating better cooked meals as I don't snack as much anymore. Plus it takes a while but you won't feel hungry during breakfast time if you have tea or coffee (again, no sugar but if you want you can have milk or milk substitutes [soy milk])

we muslims have fast at least 30 days a year in a month called Ramadan, no water or food from the sunrise to sunset, it's been 1444 year now and we are generation after generation doing it so i'm pretty sure even tho there's not much researchers about fasting it's definitely harmless and i believe it's not just fine, it's really good for the health and as i said before it's been a lot of years while humans doing this and non of those groups of people have any kind of disease or something like that.

I did it for a month in 2020 and it was quite nice. I started eating at 10 am and stopped at 6 pm. My family dines later than that so that was an obstacle for me but the morning was so perfect. I had an extra long break from my classes to eat breakfast. I started eating a lot more after I stopped so I gained some weight but it really helped me realise how many times I snack without even concluding calories. Well rn I don't do IT but I still eat two meals and a concious snack and it feels kinda same? For me. I was able to lose some weight with this method. Anyway thanks for reading this far. I just wanted to share my experience

I never in my life ate breakfast on school days (except for Sunday's sometimes) and my mom used to call me crazy for doing so. But I never felt hungry in mornings, I just used to feel fresh when I didn't eat anything and more energetic. After eating breakfast I just felt slouchy.

I think since I was 6-7? I only started intermittent fasting for one whole month full once a year for religious reason. Then when I turned 13 I did it again twice a week for religious reasons, and now 15 I do it on a daily (sometimes I skip if I'm not feeling it) I think what I'm trying to say is it's not that hard once you get used to it and I find ways to still excersice without pushing myself :vv

Muslims fasting for 30 days. We break our fast usually when the sun goes down. It does work, i lost a lot of weight during fasting month but after fasting month, we have eid ul Adha, where we make ceremonies and eat a lot of good and then, i usually gained weight for that month lol. So far, fasting do no harm to the body. I only did it for religious purpose bfr. Now I'm going to try it for diet purposes.

Intermittent fasting has been around for thousands of years, it's actually a pity that we took it out of our cultures!! I'm an orthodox christian and we do have different holidays/ traditions built around not eating for certain hours( short fast) or even a full day(black fast). Even better, there are certain "fasts" which are basically just "switch to a vegan diet for weeks at a time" in which we're not allowed to eat any animal products except one or two days in which you're allowed to eat fish. This, along with some healthy habits such as lots of vegetables is what helped our ancestors stay healthy and reach old age, I'm glad to see IMF being talked about more!

As a Muslim woman I am used to fasting since I was as young as 6 years old. Islam introduced fasting 1000 years ago and all Muslims practice it at least one month yearly. On top of that month (which is called Ramadan) our Prophet Mohammed used to fast every Monday and Thursday. I agree with all that you said about how and why fasting help us and even in our religion it is advised that not all Muslims partake in fasting especially if their doctor tells them not to.

There is actually plenty of evidence of effects of fasting, but not all of them are public and are becoming mainstream only recently. There are many religions, cultures, and practices that encourage and have fasting. If shortly, in the long term intermittent fasting helps avoid many health issues people deal with in elderly age, it slows down aging and adds more years. One of the reasons it works is because there is no human on earth that has all the perfect conditions and diet to never have intoxication, fasting gives digestive system time to fully get rid of it and balance out hormones. In fact, people never had 3-5 meals + snacks per day. And 2 reasons we believe that it’s bad to skip meals is 1. Because majority of our us were raised by a post war generation which literally had nothing to eat so out of their fear/trauma they make us eat more than they could in their childhood, 2 food industry is the most profitable business in the world. One of the ways to search up long term effects of fasting could be searching up “what happens to your body when you *a religious fast" because those have been practiced for centuries, or hunters fasting or other cultures that you know practiced fasting for centuries EDIT: one of the fastings that exist for very long time (that I know very well of) is Muslim and Jewish fasts. (Although there is water restriction detail) and they are done for a certain period of time, you can still find a lot of information and actual studies of what happens to your system from fasting BUUUUT!!! She mentioned it very well, it’s not for everyone!!! There are unique health conditions that make fasting damaging to an individual, so if you suspect you might not be eligible to fast, consult with health care professional to clarify that

yep but tbf i'd say that goes for any of those weight loss diets in general, I've done intermittent fasting before and i'm a teen-and i definitely don't recommend going on it because it affected my health physically and mentally as well as doing other diets and exercise. I've lost a lot weight but i've also lost my period, my relationship with my family and other things. It's hard intermittent fasting anyway, especially if you have strict parents or busy school schedules. If you're a teen wanting to lose weight (trust me i've been there and now i have to recover) then please just eat healthier and try to do walking with your family everyday :)
