Notes about this video. It is absolutely essential for me to share that I fast for 2 reasons: ● for cell repair and disease prevention. If you have not read about autophagy, I encourage you to look it up. ● I find fasting extremely beneficial for my adventures where food can be limited - rowing the Atlantic, long distance hikes, my recent trip living on a desert island. Fasting helps my body become fat-adapted which allows me to perform well in those kind of environments. Also, a note to say I do not follow the ketogenic diet (I tried it many years ago for many months). It doesn't suit me as I enjoy carrots, and beetroot, and other vegetables and fruits too much. I also found it anti-social (visiting friends for dinner etc) and my tummy wasn't happy (if you catch my drift 😉)

I feel bad for our society that has been conditioned that we will “die if we don’t eat. I have fasted for years and grateful it has been a part of my journey. The longest I have done is 42 days. (Water fast) It’s crazy to watch my body GET HEALTHY. My skin never clears up till day 14 because there is so much JUNK in our foods!!!!! It’s definitely different for everyone but there are so many benefits to fasting that people can’t comprehend. If you struggle. Just make sure you make it through day three. Stay focused for that. We teach our body how to function and sometimes we need to RETRAIN IT. Eventually you won’t be hungry and you can literally feel your body get healthier and your brain clearer along with more energy each day as you go forward. You got this. I will be 62 in February. I’ve been fasting since my late 30’s and it’s been the great secret to helping my body be HEALTHY!!!!!!Find out for yourself!!!!!

I'm 61 and I just finished a 5 day water fast so today was the first day I could eat. I wasn't eating a lot of calories before the fast, and I was eating low carb too. I walked 3 miles every morning, and often took a shorter walk in the afternoon. The first 4 days were no problem, I didn't feel super hungry and drinking water eliminated the feeling. The fifth day was very difficult. I had very low energy and was much hungrier. But that fifth day was very warm, almost 90 degrees, and the other days were only in the 60s-70s, so I blame it on the heat. One thing I want to warn people about when you start eating again is that you need to eat very low or no fat and build up until your body can handle it. Otherwise you'll be having a lot of diarrhea every time you eat.

I am 61 and currently doing two 36-hr fasts per week. Hopefully that's enough time to get cell repair going! Your other video inspired me to keep going~~it's really not that hard (it was harder for me doing the 5:2 where I ate some calories on the "fast days"~~much easier for me to abstain and just get through the day with water and such). Thanks for your wonderful videos!

What you said about "where food was limited" reminded me of a famous female American hiker from way back in the day. To be honest, you were kind of reminding me of her, anyway. She was interviewed once about idea of taking the exact right foods/amounts, and al these rules for hiking and such. She laughed it off, said something like she takes a few tins with her in her rucksack, eats them when she is hungry and if she runs out, she doesn't eat until she gets some place where she can get more food. I can't remember her name, anymore, but I have read things about her several times and always have her in the back of my mind, somewhere.

Wow, no food for 5 days sounds like a killer fast. & I've lately started to struggle with snacking and overeating/ consuming junk food for awhile now. I finally gave up a meal for lent, and I failed in the beginning but improved and fasted for longer periods towards the end of lent.. All this time I was trying to eat less for all the wrong reasons or for superficial reasons. My fasts finally held a more meaningful purpose and prayers to God strengthened my commitment. . .

You make it seem easy....I've been having a bad acidity relapse, I've always had gerd symptoms from both my parents having it in the severe form so I guess its normal for me but it has become so bad with its frequent episodes all of a sudden, maybe due to an accidental overdose on antiobiotics during a damn dengue infection...probably did alot of damage on the gut microbiome which I'm considering this fasting to reset. As a muslim I've fasted since teenage for a month every year altho only during days and I'd always eat junk during those nights so I guess it never really brought the benefits...your videos have inspired me so much that I'll try it even tho I have severe health anxiety which I'm trying to get over by facing the fears. Thankyou and wish me luck

Thanks for sharing your fasting journey. I have just bailed on my 72 hour fast after 40 hours. The caffeine withdrawal headache was just debilitating and I just could not concentrate on my work. My advice to anyone who is contemplating doing a fast for the first time, would be to wean yourself off caffeine / sugary junk the week before you start the fast. I would have found it much easier if I had done that, rather than going cold turkey after the Christmas excess.

ADVICE TO THOSE LOOKING TO LOSE WEIGHT So, I have done many, many fasts with the goal of weightloss. What I have found is that after a fast of probably 2-5 days I would gain all the weight back minus maybe a pound or 2 even when I am being super restrictive. What is more effective: I have found it WAY more effective to ensure that you eat something each day, but make that one food a day a SNACK not a meal. Usually, I would have an energy drink (or coffee from starbucks) nearly every day and for food I would literally have an item that is less than 300 calories. Like some cheese or sometimes a small breakfast sandwich. (calories are not exact, its just to emphasize that it was something small). If I wanted a sandwich, I would have half a sandwich. If I wanted something sweet, I would have a brownie from starbs. Just NO SIDES. Make it as little food as possible. The weight does not come off as quick, but I still lost a pound a day (sometimes 2) in the first 5ish days and after that it goes a little slower. AND when you start eating normally, you do not gain it all back. You might gain some back if you binge though. ALSO because you ARE eating its way easier to go on for long periods of time with this. I did this for 3 weeks and lost 13 pounds that I have kept off. It also did not feel like I was depriving myself because I did allow myself to have a treat. I only ate once a day, but it was someting I wanted (other than full meals). Like if I was craving chocolate that day, I would have a brownie as my only food for the day along with my starbucks or energy drink. Or some days when you actually eat normally, it wont throw you off course that bad. As someone with fasting experience, please do this instead. Fasting is so mentally challenging- and for what? Youll gain most of it back anyways. I remember I went through the toughest time doing a 5 day fast. I lost 14 pounds. By the next week I had gained 13 pounds. It was so much suffering just to be back where I started.

Just a comment on your ‘novel’ Laura didn’t do this fast for weight loss as she explained. Really liked the inclusion of Dr Jason Fung, brilliant man. Your experience in fasting for weight loss and not being successful in keeping the weight off is due to your diet and that is what needs attention. True fasting does not include snacks, only water or non food beverages. If you include snacks, that is defined as light eating, not fasting. Loads of luck to you. 😊

I’m about to do a 21 day fast starting on the 12th. We started prepping for it on March 28th. It’s the “A Healthy Alternative” by Chris James & 5 other coaches. Then you do a supervised refeed and follow up to maintain your results. Some people have already lost 15 lbs just doing the prep. I lost 7 so far. I’ve always approached fasting from low carb/keto. They use high water content veggies and fruits to prepare. Surprised that I haven’t had sugar spikes…I’m diabetic (yes my doctor knows I’m doing it and feels it could be beneficial with the autophagy that will happen). I’ve made big lists of things to do so I don’t think about food. I’ve done several extended fasts so I’m pretty prepared mentally. I always feel amazing when I finish them. I thought I would try this approach since it’s basically a step by step 60 days and you are doing it as a group and the coaches answer you back immediately. So far very impressed with his program.

I missed cooking during my long fast too- so got into fermenting food, so I could use my energy to be productive and make delicious food that would not be ready for many days or weeks. I was generally not tempted to eat. I found myself accidentally wanting to taste food just as part of the normal cooking process. Aside from that, fermenting proved a great use of my time.

I did my first extended fast (4 days at New Year) basically because of your previous 7 day fast video although I did also research it well (Love Dr Fung) and had done IF in the past. It really kick started my year so well and I am now happy, doing IF again and running again. So thanks! June I am doing Whole30 as my eldest has been having acne skin issues and I have finally convinced her to give it a go, along with the rest of the family to see if certain foods are causing it. I'm glad you included some 'prep' to this 5 day fast, I think prep is sometimes the most important thing to help with success. I'm now prepping for the Whole 30 with introducing new recipes, cutting down on some things and making pledges to get up and do everyone a good breakfast (I will put mine aside for lunch) so that we can stick to the plan. PS I also love your 5km every day and think it may be in my future too.
