"According to various sources (the exact figure cannot be given, because the entrance was free), on Saturday, from 300 to 400 thousand people visited the airfield in Tushino. They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." fun fact that most people dont get, the reason for the helicopters flying over the crowed so low is because when you have 1.6 million people [which was actually just the number they stopped counting at] all jumping up and down and getting all worked up and breathing hard.. they actually suck all the oxygen out of the air, and the copters are used to circulate fresh air and oxygen into the crowed

That energy is why I love metal. The vibe of a crowd of fans is unreal. My best concert experience was getting to be at arms length from a band in a little dive bar... it's like they're taming lightning in front of your eyes, but only barely in control. You feel the power coming from those amps in your bones. It can be a spiritual experience.
@markhilker9454

Arms length in a little dive bar, you are right. I was very lucky as far as right place, right time. I've seen countless bands that are legends now at the Fillmore East. Place was a shoe box. I think the seating capacity was about 1300. It was basically an old style movie theatre with a balcony. Saw led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Jimi, Grateful dead (probably like 40 times) and tons of other notable groups. Wasn't a bad seat in the house and I figure most of my hearing loss now is from those days but man what a great time it was.

It was an amazing show with an amazing story behind it with this taking place 3 short months before the official dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Soviet people really let their hair down and had an amazing time at this show. James Hetfield (Metallica's frontman) has said in interviews that while he was on stage and playing during this show, he could not stop staring at the helicopters and was petrified that one was going to malfunction and crash into the crowd. Thankfully that didn't happen and this show was one for the history books.

There is a video on KZbin where some of the other performers that were there are talking about Queen's performance, it was recorded many years after the show and is called The Story of Queen at Live aid. If you watch their performance it would be a good follow up to watch that as well.

I watched Metallica in concert in 1989 in Seattle. Best concert I’ve ever been to, but, two years later, this concert in Moscow Russia definitely beats that to hell. Mind blowing. 1.6 million Russians/Ukrainians/Eastern Europeans going crazy during this concert. It was epic.

1.6 million was the preliminary count before the start of the show, but the promoters say there was close to 2 million people there by the time Pantera and then Metallica took the stage..56 people didn't make it home from that show, they died right there in that sea of people....🤘🏻🇺🇸

Absolutely true. I was stabbed at a Morbid Angel/Exodus show and didn't realize it until after the show. Right in my hip, clear as day. Crazy.

I enjoy singing, but if it’s 50 people that I know personally, I’m nervous as hell. If it’s 100 people at a bar that I don’t know, I’m comfortable. I don’t figure I’ll ever see them again. I can’t imagine 1,6 million! That’s insane! James Hatfield is the lead singer.

People will argue but metallicas frontman, James hetfield, states is interviews there were about 500-600k at their set. But over 1.6 we’re in attendance for the entire concerts duration.
