Greetings everyone! Today's video will feature the 1/72 scale Academy F-14A with aftermarket decals from JEight Designs representing the Tomcat that Maverick and Rooster steal at the end of Top Gun: Maverick.

Ah yes, the F-14 from Top Gun: A New Hope. It was a good movie, though. The trench run was especially memorable.

Awesome build. My father was the chief safety inspector for the F-14 for over 25 years. It has a lot of sentimental value in our family.

I have a hard time with Vallejo air and metal color, I’m glad to see it can be pulled off.

Its taken me a while to get dialed in with Vallejo, but now there are certain colors of theirs that I really love, the Light Gull Gray I used on this Tomcat is one of them, it always goes down great for me. I use their metal colors when doing small areas. If I'm going to do a whole NMF aircraft, I'd use Alclad.

One thing that I’m not sure I understood well, the exhaust nozzles where supposed to be one open and one shot at some point you said ? But at the end you opted for both open ? Thanks, yeah, now that you mention it, it looks like I failed to explain that we decided later on that we didn't like one closed and one opened, so went with both opened. Apologies that I missed that in the commentary.

I'm not 100% sure if the Top Gun 1 tomcats were overall light gull gray. They almost look like dark gull gray to me, but I am no expert!

Thank you, many of the aftermarket sets I get for my models come packed with the foam, I just save that and use it for masking.

Tell me more about that stand you used? How did u mod the kit o the stand fits? Thanks in advance

So the stand is a Games Workshop large flying stand, and I just cut out a cross shaped hole in the fuselage of the model, stuffed a little two part epoxy inside the model where the stand would slot in and created a sort of pocket for the stand to rest in. nice and tight, keeps the aircraft stable on the stand, but still leaves it free to remove.

The blue tape I use is "Scotch Blue" Multi-surface tape that I get from Home Depot.

FYI: Just like other Grumman Naval Aircraft the F-14 Tomcat had issues with seals that would leak Hydraulic, Engine Oil and Fuel so the Maintainers Saying was the Bird was not down unless there was a clean SKIN PANEL. I served in the Navy for 6 years and was assigned to a Squadron for a Grumman Platform on the East Coast after Sept 11, 2001 and was at NAS Oceana when the Tomcat Squadrons came home from their Final Combat Deployment. I was also at Oceana when the Tomcat Squadron were transitioning to Super Hornets but there was nothing super about them!
