Just a boy and his dad having an adventure. Flew to LA with my dad and picked up a stepside chevy, left LA Midnight friday night, back home in Alabama monday morning so early the street lights were still on. Only stopped for food, fuel and 8 hours in a motel in a sketchy part of Albuquerque. Had a lot of good conversations and heard a lot of good stories from my dad, I drove about 95% of the trip. He's been gone 10 years now, miss him every day.

I feel ya friend. Lost my Pa on Superbowl Sunday '22. We were talkin about Stafford getting a crack at an SB (Lions Fans) and he passed while having a nap just before kickoff. Miss him too much. He took me all over Canada and the USA on vacation adventures as a kid. He was a foreman at the auto plant and always ran into someone he knew in our travels. I think the funniest was him running into a guy he knew in Elvis's house. LOL

You made my eyes sweat, it wasn't tears. Lost two of my buddies last summer. One was a little handicap guy I saved. He had problems his entire life and only had one eye. I made it as comfortable as I could for him. Then my tux passed, he was 17 years old. That cat helped me through my mom passing and was with me through my addiction and getting clean. They become our little partners and are always happy to see us. Same with our pups. I also resued the one eyed cats brother at the same time. He is still with me and he is always at my side or sleeping on dad. Im a large bearded biker covered in tattoos, so keep this between us. Sorry for your lost pet.

Derek. I am nearing 77 years old. Many viewers have commented on how your sons will remember these trips. I felt the need to comment that YOU will have many hours of joy sitting in your rocker remembering. My son is 46 and has his own life in another city, but I relive the times we spent doing ordinary things when he was 8 or 10 or 12 and I enjoy them all over again. BTW pull the 302 and C-4 from the Mustang and put them in the pickup you rescued in Texas. Having a neat Ford pickup hot rod with a MOPAR engine is an offense to nature.

Derek is such an incredible dad. Despite needing to get the trip done on a time table, and fighting all the car problems; he still made time to stop at all the museums and gift shops along the way, and pick up some souvenirs. That stuff is so important to kids. Going out of the way to enjoy, and embrace that, really makes for a proper vacation and memories that Bailey won't ever forget. A lot of Dads would have stuck to the road, and skipped the shops and stops. Pretty awesome to see. His kids are very lucky to have such a great Dad!

Great video! I retired in 2020. That summer my dad and I hooked his small enclosed trailer to his mint and pampered 2014 Escalade and headed from Bloomington, MN to his other home in Palm Desert, CA. He had a list of things he needed help doing there. Two weeks of good adventures and time together. Memories for a lifetime. After the trip he gave me the trailer and I bought the car when we found him an almost new Escalade. He passed in 2021. So glad we did that.

28 years ago I did a trip in a 1979 mustang pace car from CA Bay area to SC with my dad and those memories are burned into my brain. Great times many times we over heated we froze our butts off stopped at an army surplus store and got warmer dry clothes (sunroof leaked when it rained and while going though the snow over the mountains but I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. My dad passed away in 2016 and I've still got the car, it hasn't ran since we made that trip ended up with a crack in the block. Love to see anyone man/dad spending time with their kids. I try to always include one of my 2 daughters in anything that I do. When they grow up they will always have the times that they spent with their dad. Thanks for the GREAT VIDEO

When my father and I moved to the US many years ago, we drove from Urbana Illinois, to San Francisco. I was 8 and my dad did all the driving in a 1982 Chevy Maliby station wagon. I lost my dad 30 years ago. He was a traveling salesman and he used to cover 3 provinces in Canada. He’d take me out of school sometimes to go with him. I learned more on those road trips about him, life, how to drive, etc etc. I’d love love love one more road trip with him. Excellent video Derek. He was always laser focused on work and could never shut it off to do these kind of things, so I did the next best thing and went and worked with him as soon as I could, all the way into my mid 30s. Today is the 1yr anniversary of his passing at 79 years old.

Dan, FYI, after sliding your tandems, you should be able to set tractor brakes, then resupply air to the trailer and tractor, wait a second, and then set both brakes again. That will release the pins and you can then supply air to tractor and do a tug test to set trailer pins. Stops you from having to get back out and push in the release knob on trailer. Obviously it's good habit to get out and double check they engaged but most times you never got the holes perfectly so it saves a step cause you can pull until you hear them pop in without having to get out and manually hit the button.

I’m 75 years old. Every year as a kid we drove from Zanesville, Ohio to LA. He died when I was 15. I still remember those trips today and we still do 66 every chance we get. Your boy will remember that trip and tell his kids about it for years to come. Kiddos to you. Did I win the white pickup? 🤣🤣

I live in northern Saskatchewan and we have to odd cold day in winter. I had a 1969 ford f150 when I was a young feller and never plugged it in for many winters and it never ever failed to start. It didn’t use any oil was consistent 20 mpg or better . It spent most of its life pulling a smaller trailer with a backhoe and never left us on the side of the road either . When I was done with , I gave it to local farmer and it sat behind their barn for all these years. Then a few years ago, in the middle of winter , we put some gas in the tank and removed the mouse nest in the air cleaner…then being a standard , we pulled and it and it started instantly. All I can say is …thanks Henry ! Great episode guys !

1963 we moved from Tulsa to Calgary for my dad's job. We had a 1960 Ford 2dr sedan, 293, 3 on tree. We did not have a block heater in it and it started every morning except the morning it was -42F ! That old YBlock was reliable. Pop installed a block heater and it never ever failed to start. Darned old Ford's😮 rusted fast but it always started. He got 25 bucks for it in trade in LA IN 1968, THE FLOORS were gone and it was totally worn out. But it still starteD LOL

Derek, each of your sons will absorb everything you do or say in their own way. My son is now 25, and we spend time together going out to eat or sometimes taking in a movie. Out of the blue, he will thank me for something I said or did years ago, and he will tell me how he uses these things of the past in his own life. This helps me to think that I was a good influence, but I still wish I would have spent more time with him. I was the one driving him to school and dropping him off in car line, but he had to stay in after-school care until nearly 6 pm because I couldn't get away from work sooner to go pick him up. Those hours after school were not much fun for him due to being alone for 1-2 hours in the after-school care. Be assured that the hours you do spend with your boys are quality time.

I am an American expat living in the UK. I am a car guy, an engineer, a pilot and a farmer (it's a long story). I had a great international career but I miss the USA and all of the scenery. I have my dad's fully restored '66 mustang convertible with me but I always dreamed of driving it on the route 66 trip that you took in this video. It's unlikely I will ever get to make that journey so I am truly grateful for this video. I will watch it and rewatch it, dreaming of that trip. This episode made me tear up. When you were in the store with the military wall of fame, I think I saw a cap for CVA-43, that’s the USS Coral Sea my late brother served on in the earl 60’s. Then you were at the place with all of the tractors and my grandpa in Oregon had an early 50’s Ford tractor that I drove into a ditch. Thank you

Thanks for the great Video, Derek. I drove from Michigan to California and back almost 10 years ago. On our way back we took Route 66 for quite a while. What a great trip, stopping by the Grand Canyon and other sites along the way. I didn’t do it in an old drag car, we had our almost new at the time 2014 Ram Diesel, probably a bunch more comfortable than your ride.
