A few years back my Dr. called me in after an abnormal blood test. She said my eGFR results indicated stage 3 chronic kidney disease. I felt this was strange because there was never any problems with my eGFR in the past. I had recently started taking fenofibrate and thought perhaps that was causing the abnormal eGFR results. After discontinuing fenofibrate, my eGFR readings returned to normal and my kidneys are working just fine. Perhaps there are other people out there who are being told they have stage 3 chronic kidney disease which is actually being caused by medications they're taking.

Even worse, very common meds: regular NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, ketorolac, Aleve, Advil, Motrin etc) directly cause kidney impairment. Take them together with a diuretic (Lasix, HCTZ) and even worse, add one other common medication prescribed to "protect the kidneys" (a "-pril" or a "-sartan") and this combination has a high risk to destroy your kidneys.

The key is to ask your doctor to include a test called 'Glucose' on your normal blood labs as well as a test called 'Insulin' so you can calculate your HOMA-IR which is showing whether you have Insulin Resistance and/or Type 2 Diabetes. Doctors are sometimes 'resistant!' ha ha to adding the 'Insulin' test to your labs but just ask them calmly and that you are interested in your own health. Dr. Ekberg explains it all really clearly.

I ended up with severe (stage 4) kidney disease due to a severe urinary tract infection. I didn't feel the usual symptoms of the UTI because I'm paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury, and I have no sensation below the level of my injury, so it snuck up on me and went systemic. Oddly, I don't have insulin resistance or diabetes. That could be due to my diet. I'm vegan, and have never been someone who eats sweets. One odd thing is that even though I'm not doing dialysis (I take meds which keep me alive, and which would be filtered out leading to my death if I did), my kidney functions have returned to near close to normal. My creatinine level has been measured at 2.0 for the last three times they have tested it. My doctor says that you can't reverse end stage kidney disease, but that whatever I'm doing, I should keep it up. As I said before, I'm vegan, and in addition I eat almost no processed foods. I pretty much make everything I eat from scratch, and I even grow some of my own food, including many of the herbs and spices I use. A lot of herbs and spices can be grown indoors. I even grow my own ginger and turmeric inside. The turmeric is super easy to dehydrate and grind in a spice grinder or coffee mill, and when you make it fresh like that, it tastes so much better than anything you can get commercially that there simply isn't any comparison. But I digress. Another thing I do which might be helping is that I drink a lot of water. Since I'm paralyzed, I have to drink a lot of water to try to prevent UTI's. Drinking water is good for the kidneys, and also helps keep things clean. I live in a city where the water is particularly good, and where the city water supply comes from artesian wells. It tastes better than anything you can get in bottles, and it's not chlorinated all to the devil, and isn't fluoridated. It's just good sweet water which feels great going down. I don't necessarily recommend my diet for others, but it has definitely worked for me. If you are in stage 4, and nothing else is working, you might try going vegan, not consuming much sugar, bread, drinking lots of water, and refraining from eating processed foods. Keep in mind that my kidney disease was not the result of diabetes, and I have no idea what this sort of diet might have on someone with diabetes. Still, what Dr Ekberg is saying fits with what I've been eating all my life. I'm not going to be able to repair the damage to my kidneys, but I can and do keep the floors clean, and that has got to help.

20 years ago, aged 53, I was (I believed) a healthy person. No obvious signs of any problem. But I went to my GP Dr because I noticed my ankles and feet seemed to be swelling through the day. The Dr's reaction was "Don't worry that's normal". Not being convinced I saw another Dr a few weeks later and he did a blood test which discovered my poor creatinine level. That was the only reason I discovered I had CKD. The Dr told me at the time, that my kidneys were 20 years older than they should be. It was border-line Stage 1/stage 2. I was prescribed tablets for hypertension of the kidneys. 20 years on I am on the same dosage, now in stage 3A but still no further symptoms, only edema in my lower legs.

I mix up some vinegar and potassium bicarbonate for my kidneys. The kidneys have to use up their own protein to deacidify the blood so I keep it slightly base to help the kidneys a bit. The vinegar itself has many good effects, I have noticed I have a lot less craving for carbs, and my mood is also enhanced.

For the last 10 years Kaiser said I had CKD because my creatinine levels were always in the 1.31 range. I think the highest was 1.50. What they didn't take into consideration was my body mass and the fact that I lifted weights 4 times a week. I also was on creatine supplement. I recently took my annual CBC test which showed a EGFR of 62 which again has been normal for me. All other kidney tests were normal range ie Uric acid..Bun. I learned about another test the cystain C blood test that is supposed to be more accurate in assessing kidney function. This test showed my EGFR was 88. I wish Kaiser would've done this test instead of me doing the research and paying for it.

NEED ADVICE: Ok, so I think you and I are on the same page. I got my blood test from QUEST DIAGNOSTIC. Here’s why: I’m 38 and my egfr is at 89-91, approximately. Shouldn’t it be at 100? I don’t have pre-diabetes, clear urine, protein levels seem normal-along with sodium and pottasium. My vitamin D and b12 were high- along with my cholesterol and I’m low on MCV (anemic) but take iron supplements. My hemoglobin seems okay too. The thing is no one mentioned this to me till I started paying attention to my charts but I have been working out since about 31-32 years old so my egfr was the same, then. Am I at health risk? My creatine is at 1.09 and I weigh about 153lbs.

Thank you for that information. I come from a long line of family members that have pkd so constantly worried and paranoid. But even when I lost a ton of weight it still was at 60. I will look into that other test. 😊

Search for a document called The Borax Conspiracy. I put a pinch of borax in my morning coffee almost every day (probably every other day would be good enough). Don't take D³.
