I´ve benn playing the Owen´s Defence for the last year. I felt in love with this opening exactly because it works basically against everything. You don´t need to prepare 4/5 opening against different approaches. Many players at my beginner level don´t know how to respond. Now I´m trying to learn the Caro.-Kann to expand my opening repertoire

I played this for a bit after watching Aman’s speedrun. Under 1500 ELO about half the games players blunder the e4 pawn. I still struggled converting as a noob with the position. Great review.

The Rousseau Gambit against Italian guarantees some thrilling games. It's the Vienna for black.

The Rousseau Gambit against Italian guarantees... worse positions. If white is a vienna player, they play d4 and you're worse.

I think this is now my favorite video on this opening. You can play it against just about anything, and black can still play out the bishop when white closes the center. I would think there are possible transpositions to other queenside fianchetto openings, like the Queens Indian. Are there any other queenside fianchetto openings for black? I can't think of any.

This has been my main opening for a long time. It transposes into queens indian, nimzo indian, and hippo defense. Chessbrah has a speedrun(black pieces speedrun) on this opening from 800 elo to 2500 elo, they usually transpose into other openings too. I learned some lines from watching their games.

I think 1... b6 can be interesting at the lower levels, but I feel like if white knows what to do, black mostly just gets a bad french. Specifically the line with Bd3, Nc3, Nge2 is quite simple and I don't see how black gets a decent position there. About the problem at 1:16, I like to play 4... d5 here. It's objectively a bit dubious, but only if white knows exactly what to do (and pretty much nobody does). Most games I play continue with 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. 0-0 Nb6 and then 7. Bb3 Bg4 8. h3 Bh5 9. Re1 Qe7 (position is almost equal, opposite side castling with attacking chances for both sides) or 7. Bb5 Bd6 8. Re1 f6 9. d4 0-0 10. Bxc6 bxc6 11. dxe5 fxe5 (most players miss that the e5 pawn isn't actually hanging, white has to play accurately now to avoid getting into a bad position).

Move order is important: 2... e6 instead of Bb7 allows the c8 bishop to come out sooner to pin the kinight on c3 (e4 b6 d4 e6 Nc3 Bb4) but it wont work if instead: e4 b6 d4 Bb7 Nc3 e6 4. a3!

Very curious. I don't think I've encountered this opening before, so it's an uncommon one, presumably. After watching this video and doing some research with the database, my conclusion is that it may be a tough nut to crack, if white doesn't come up with a system to set up against 1. b6 (f3 at some point looks pretty interesting, though). Overall, a nice and informative video, cheers!

I'm not the biggest fan of this side line opening stuff, but I get that it is nice to have chocolate sprinkles on your vanilla main line ice cream now & again, but please don't choke on them! -) I used to play the English defence after 1...e6 then ...b6 & it was fine but it is a bit passive for Black & doesn't challenge higher rated White players too much. As White against 1...b6 I just use the simple strategy to shut down & play against the fianchetto bishop & that generally works well & only higher rated players seem to deal with it with black. As ever, my motto is, "If you like it play it!" & I think you will find a way to make it work for you...or not!? LOL...Great video though..thanks & best wishes ;-)

Man. I’ve been playing caro kann for 4 months or so but I just am not winning with it enough. I have studied the keep it simple 2.0 course from CS and I feel like it’s difficult to just get an even position out of the opening Maybe I need to try this

Sorry but I'm coming back to this video again and again, does this opening have a name? (Side question, when do we call an opening a defense- when you play it with black or when it's a defensive opening?)
@LightSquares
@LightSquares Жыл бұрын
Owen's Defence in some circles. I think the use of the word defence does not imply a defensive opening.

Does the king's indian work the same way, you can essentially play it against everything? For someone looking to just play the same opening every game

Not really 1 e4 Nf6 or 1 e4 g6 are known as Alekhine and Modern defence respectively. They might transpose to KID but are different. There might be a 1… g6 course against everything however.

@@LightSquares that’s why I grind w the engine, baby! 🤣🤣👍🏽👍🏽🙏🙏 And why I try to play the exact same moves over and over again. I need that repetition to learn… 🤷🏻‍♂️ When I was a kid and even in my 20s, I had no plan, no system - each game was its own discrete entity. Now I try to get my games to build on each other 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏽🙏
