It's Louis again I really need to get better at my intros haha
This video goes out to all my guy or girls who ever find themselves in a pinch for a pant hem.
This alteration is the most common and the one I see more often messed up for people, don't let that be you.
If you have any other questions feel free to leave a comment below or reach out through my website www.aspiringge...

Hi, I'm from India. My uncle and my grandfather were only tailors then I was just a child I used to sit beside them when they were doing their job. I observed what they did. That helped me hem my pants. I never taken to tailors for alteration. I do hand stitching. Though I am not a professional tailor, my hemings were appreciated by my friends. What you do is the way I do. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for these clear instructions! It is perfect for temporarily shortening pants on a costume rental for our high school’s musical. I’m going to bookmark to share with the costume crew again next year.

Best video I've seen so far on hemming dress pants as you incorporate the close up shots which are very important. Keep up the great work!

Well done! I feel capable of doing this now for emergency purposes only, although usually either have the Nordstrom tailor or really the tailor inhouse on the ready if not my local tailor expecting me.

Thank you aspiring gent great video. I tried this technique and it came out really good nice and tight. My question is, why can't the hand stich be permanent. Thanks for your reply.

Hi, I have been using this technique for many years. However i thought it was the proper finish. How would a tailor do this ?. Also how do you know the correct length of a jacket ?. Good job on the video, you explain things very well!
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 5 жыл бұрын
Drew Chambers so by hand this is the way to do it but the stitches would be much closer together. Most tailors have a machine that is equipped for this very task.
@zaniac100
@zaniac100 3 жыл бұрын
I've been using this exact technique for years, and leave it as permanent. You do have to take care when putting on your trousers as rushed dressing and a snagged toenail can pull out the stitches. I put on my socks first to avoid this. I buy many vintage thrift store items many have tight close transparent thread to hold up the hem which I guess was done by a professional machine. One pair I bought did have this technique on them. Dunno if that was original or a home job.

Great video! Can you also make a tutorial on how to do it more professionally for us tailoring enthusiasts? Would be cool to see how to do it with and without a cuff. Thanks!
@Theyralltakenfu
@Theyralltakenfu 5 жыл бұрын
When we were younger and needed pants done, my Mom would use some type of webbing inside the cuffs instead of having to stitch them. The time it took you to press the garment with the hot iron, the pants would be done.
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 5 жыл бұрын
Greg Taylor and that would be a good option as well. I only would say that using fusing like that could leave a residue on the pants. But in a pinch a good alternative!
@tiffanyhackerspace8377
@tiffanyhackerspace8377 5 жыл бұрын
That's "fusible webbing," and it did exactly what it was supposed to do for your mom, a stitch-less alternative (though it can come out in multiple washings) or as a base before stitching. It's not a great option for fine fabrics, but all day/erry day perfect for kids play clothes, turning jeans into shorts, quick emergency fixes, etc!

@@tiffanyhackerspace8377 Yes, now that you mention it , that sounds like it. You are correct, it was meant as a quick fix, esp for a mother who was raising 3 boys on her own. Thank you, and have a great weekend.

Great video. Where is a good length for pants. Lately it looks like you should show a little ankle. Should there not be a break and just come to the top of the shoe where your foot goes thru. Just wanting to look up to date and stylish. Thanks for your input.
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 5 жыл бұрын
Gary George if you’re looking for the most stylish you’ll want a little ankle showing but who know how long that will be the trend. I’d recommend just barely resting on the top of your shoes or one half break.

I know that cuffs add weight, helping to keep a neat stright line to the pants. But for a shorter gent cuffs can be disadvantageous by breaking up that line and adding visual weight. Watching you do this project, I wondered what is the maximum extra material that you would fold up inside your hem as a single layer? If one did several inches with a good blind stich it seems that you could have the heavy weight of a cuff without that cuff..... Your thoughts?
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 4 жыл бұрын
Medium Ed if you really like the extra weight of the cuff without the cuff I would add 4 inches of inlay (extra material) but fold it to keep the fabric near the bottom of the hem.

Great - here’s “not” how you’d recommend doing it permanently…. How “would” you recommend hemming pants permanently ??? Any tips on getting the blind stitch on the sewing machine to work well ? Or do you recommend hand blind stitching ? Also, is pinking the raw edge “really” sufficient - or would you recommend zig zagging the edge ?
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 2 жыл бұрын
Working on that video. I use a machine for blind hemming so not super familiar with the home machines. and yes I think the pinking is plenty good.

marcos rintflaich I have one on casual pants. And it’s pretty much the same thing for dress pants. You just take in on both seams on just the one. If that makes sense.

Hello! Great Video! I saw you from The Kavalier and subbed here. Question: Was wondering what to do if I had raw edges which are fraying, should I fold them underneath and follow your blind hemming method over it?
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 4 жыл бұрын
Alvin Zhou thanks for the sub! When it comes to raw edges you have a few remedies. The one you just mentioned. Using pinking shears. Or cutting it normally and adding a zig zag stitch. All of those will work just fine just depends on what you have available to you.
@alvinz4865
@alvinz4865 4 жыл бұрын
@@AspiringGent Thanks for your response! I just tried using your blind hem method but without folding back the fabric like you did because I have a layer folded into itself to cover the raw edge. Took over an hour on one leg like 10-12 stitches per inch. Phew. Will get pinking shears soon and hopefully, I can speed up. Keep up the great work on your videos! Would suggest balancing the music and your voice though with the audio.
